LOGOS Parent Handbook Salvation University First Presbyterian Church 2103 West Anna Grand Island, Nebraska

Dear Parents, Welcome back to another year of Logos! We are so excited you have chosen our Wednesday night ministry for your child(ren). The Logos ministry strives to create an atmosphere of Kingdom Living for children, youth, and adults. What a blessing to know that Wednesday night means friends, food, and fun in a safe environment!! This year s theme is Salvation University. At Logos, we will all learn together through our textbook, the Holy Bible. By providing a viable Logos ministry, we can strive for a truly higher education, as we look forward to our graduation through salvation. Whether you are a freshman starting your faith education or have an advanced degree, we pray your experience at First Presbyterian Church will bring you and your child(ren) closer to Him. Christina Landenberger Director of Christian Education & Youth Ministry The Purpose of Logos: To create an understanding and desire in young people for accepting Christ as Lord and personal savior; To develop intelligent, active, and loyal membership and leadership in the church; To give worthwhile study, wholesome recreation and opportunities for service, all bound up in a true Christian fellowship; and To develop the kind of Christians who are able and willing to communicate their faith and to assume personal responsibility in assisting in the building of God s kingdom on earth. Logos means The Word in Greek!

What is Logos? The Logos System and Program is a dynamic ministry of Christian nurture, the goal of which is to nurture youth and children into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and live as his disciples. The Logos System Associates (all persons in local churches engaged in the Logos System and Program) believe that nurturing youth and children into right relationships of faith with God through Jesus Christ is the most important thing the church ever does. The Ministry...The Logos Ministry is made of four parts. All youth and children participate in all four parts Logos every week. Adult leaders participate in the part of the ministry in which they have agreed to share their gifts. The four parts are designed to reflect the life of the early church as expressed in Acts 2.42: "They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers." "Apostles' teaching" = Bible Study "Fellowship" = Recreation "Breaking of bread" = Family Time "Prayers" = Worship Skills Bible Study The Bible study portion of the Logos Ministry provides the foundation upon which the rest of the ministry is designed. To build Christian relationships, and to create an arena in which a Christian community can be experienced, everyone must come to know and understand the Bible. Along with regular attendance in Church School and other church programs, the Logos Ministry strives to create biblically literate youth and children who apply what they have learned in Bible study to all aspects of their life. Worship Skills The experience of corporate worship is at the center of our life together as a Christian community. The goals and objectives are: To prepare youth and children to participate regularly in worship with the congregation each Sunday; To develop within our children and youth a deep sense of involvement in and responsibility for the leadership of congregational worship; To develop habits of regular, faithful worship attendance in our children, youth and their families; To develop the musical and speaking gifts of our children and youth which enables them to offer themselves for service; To nurture the deep bonds of relationships between children, pastor, Logos Leaders & volunteers, and among one another. Recreation A variety of activities are offered every week to provide the opportunity for self discovery as young people participate in playing together, doing crafts, or exploring special interests with members of the congregation. In a non-competitive environment, we learn to play and have great fun at the expense of no one. There are few (if any) in the secular world, where they can have this type of opportunity...to work together, not against; to share, not hoard; to encourage, not compete. Re-creation provides an opportunity to practice the Christian life as Jesus would have us. Family Time During the dinner hour a unique sense of the family of God develops as Logos members and adult table parents share a meal every week. The home cooked meal is served family style giving everyone the opportunity to serve one another. A caring "family" is created at each table as table members share important events in their lives and enjoy Family Fun time together. The goals and objectives are: To deepen the experience of the extended family of the church; To develop intergenerational relationships; To celebrate the worth and preciousness of each person present at the table; To supply each young person with frequent experiences of holy hilarity.

LOGOS POLICIES Each part of our ministry is designed for your child, and each leader is anticipating your child s participation. Please remember that the Logos leaders have invested a lot of prayer and preparation time into your child s nurturing. This policy will guarantee the safety and whereabouts of your child at all times on Logos nights and help him/her develop a sense of responsibility and appreciation for others. Parent Participation: You make a commitment to participate in the ministry when registering your youth or child. It is expected that one adult from every family will help in an area of this ministry. By your participation, you re showing that Logos is a high priority! Worship: Logos members are expected to attend worship at their home church. However, attendance at First Presbyterian when Logos is involved in worship is vital. Upon receiving notice of worship participation you must notify the Worship Skill Leader immediately and inform them if your child or youth will not be able to participate. Visitors: We encourage elementary children to bring their friends to visit Logos, as a step towards registration in the ministry. Please phone the church office at two days prior to Logos Wednesday, so a place can be set at the table for him/her. The person bringing the guest must pay the $4.00 weekly fee for the guest. If friends wish to continue to attend Logos, their parents must register their children/youth. The 6-12th graders will have open visitation all year. Youth want to be where their friends are! All child or youth guests must fill out an information form, including emergency contact phone number. Any adult visitor or volunteer who wishes to eat dinner must call the church office for their reservation two days prior to Logos Wednesday. The cost of the adult visitor/volunteer meal is $3.00. Child Safety: Once a student arrives at Logos, he/she is not to leave the church grounds without verbal permission from his/her parent by notification of a Logos staff member. Please come into the building to pick up your children! Child Care: Childcare is available for children too young to participate in The Logos Program, on the days/evenings when their parents are fulfilling their commitment to serve in the Program. Absences: If your youth or child is going to be late or absent, please call the Director or the church office at Attendance will be taken each Wednesday. Snow Days: If Grand Island public schools are closed, Logos will not be held. Closings will be announced by phone call and by Call the church office at for additional information. Our church started logos in This year s Seniors started Logos in kindergarten!

FEES & REGISTRATION This is an investment in your child! Annual cost covers: meals, Bible Study curriculum, recreation/craft materials, worship skills materials, and the Logos Mission Member fee. Annual Fees: $80.00 for child #1 & 2 in a family (approximately $4.00 per meeting) $64.00 for child #3 & 4 + in a family (20% discount) A full school year of Christian nurture: $$ PRICELESS Payments: The following payment plans are available ANNUAL - $80.00 SEMESTER - $40.00 due at registration/$40.00 due in January WEEKLY - $4.00 per week Checks should be made payable to First Presbyterian Church. Please note on the memo line Logos. Parent Participation: One parent per family is required to sign up for some type of supporting participation in the ministry. An opportunity to indicate preferences is provided at the Parent s meetings. Scholarships: The need for scholarships will be reviewed on a case by case basis with the family; no child will be denied the opportunity to participate in the ministry at any time because of funding. Partial scholarships are available. Please call Christina Landenberger, Director of Christian Education at for more information. Mission: Throughout the year, students will be asked to participate in mission projects which benefit the community as well as supporting the ministry in the Dominican Republic. This may include collecting canned goods, bringing change as an offering each week, or making get well cards. It is recommended that any money students bring for offering should be earned in some way; giving personally is more meaningful than giving money provided by parents. Registration: Registration will remain open all year for all grades. Logos is based on Acts 2.42: "They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers." The Logos ministry has been working in congregations around the world for 50 years!

DISCIPLINE IS LOVE IN DISGUISE Everyone is to treat everyone else as a child of God. No one has the right to treat anyone else as if they do not matter. The root word of discipline is disciple. A disciple is defined as a follower of Christ. When we learn to love as Christ loves, we are to discipline ourselves to be the very best disciple we can be, reflecting the love of Christ to others. The act of discipline is reflected in many passages in the Bible. The 5 Rules of Logos 1. I will be silent when I see the Logos hand signal (sign language L ). 2. All I need to bring to Logos is me. 3. I will come to Logos ready to participate. 4. Walking keeps us safe. 5. I will not use my hands or my words for hurting myself or others. The sequence of steps that will be followed in handling a disciplinary problem at Logos: 1. The leader/teacher attempts to handle the situation in a positive way, without embarrassing the child involved. 2. If the behavior is disruptive and continues, the child is sent to discuss it with one of the peacekeepers. 3. If there is a continuing problem that has not been resolved, the Logos Director will call the parents of the child involved to discuss the problem. The child may have to go home early. 4. If the problem persists, a conference will be scheduled with the child, the teachers, the Logos Director, Pastor and parents. 5. Parents may be asked to accompany a child each week to facilitate expected behavior. No Child is ever dismissed from the Logos Ministry. We value children and want them to feel part of a community of faith.
