Research and Academic Positions April 2011 to December 2011 Principal Qualitative Researcher on the Singapore Management University Research Grant (SMU) to research the failure of international conventions to control transnational Asian crime business with Professor Mark Findlay. The SMU Research Grant was awarded to research the failure of international conventions to control transnational Asian crime business, which constitutes and is based 2

3 on a segment of my Ph.D. dissertation. My role in the project was both academic and research based. I was charged with library research on the nature of the socio-legal policies to target organised crime business in Malaysia, which constitutes the case-study for the project. Various policies and social campaigns were analysed and the rationale underlying these policies were contextualised against the socio-economic and political context in which they emerged. My fluency in speaking and writing Malay language is invaluable in translating into English the Malaysian socio-legal policies, government documents and information on the Malaysian ministries websites. I was also charged with conducting primary fieldwork in the Malaysian states of Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru to evaluate the effectiveness or failure of these policies to control organised crime. As field-worker, I designed semi-structured interview questions for the participants, build rapport with interview subjects and transcribed interview responses. Primary data collection was integral to writing an original research paper to fulfil the requirements of the grant. This research grant culminated in a joint publication with Professor Mark Findlay. May 2010 to December 2010 Principal Qualitative Researcher on the Singapore Management University Research Grant (SMU) to research the implications of political and commercial corruption for legitimate and illegitimate markets in Malaysia with Professor Mark Findlay. This research topic which earned the SMU grant constitutes a chapter of my Ph.D. thesis. As principal researcher, I was tasked with collecting primary data in the Malaysian states of Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru. I designed semistructured interview questions for the participants, travelled to Malaysia to recruit entrepreneurs from various legitimate business sectors like construction, food and beverage, digital media and build rapport with these research subjects in order to interview them. In Malaysia, I conducted participant observation and semi-structured interviews with these Malaysian entrepreneurs to analyse the impact of corruption on their profitability, sustainability and growth. Following that I also transcribed, wherever required, the interview responses from Malay language to English. After completing my fieldwork responsibilities, I co-wrote a journal article with Professor Mark Findlay. 3

4 July 2006 to December 2008 Teaching Assistant at the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), NUS (certified by Centre for Development of Teaching and Learning (CDTL), NUS). My job scope included lecturing, tutoring, compiling the semester s workload and marking exam scripts and administrative duties. Over the course of three years, I have taught a wide range of sociology modules which include, SC1101 Introduction to Sociology, SC Sociology of Singapore Society, Sociology of Crime and Deviance, Sociology of Religion, Sociology of Popular Culture, and Social Research Methods. February 2006 Principal Research Assistant on the Singapore Government project Youth Criminality in Singapore, funded by the Singapore Police Intelligence Department (PID), with Dr Narayanan Ganapathy (Department of Sociology, FASS, NUS). May 2004 Served in a Student Internship Program (SIP), organised by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) (Public Service Division) with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), specifically the Singapore prisons. As an intern, I carried out two research projects. The first was to offer an English-into-Malay translation of the Core Skills Programme, administered as part of a rehabilitation module to inmates, as well as to modify and evaluate the effectiveness of the Core Skills Programme, based on qualitative interviews with inmates. The second research project was a cooperative effort with prison counsellors to develop a Specialised Treatment Programme that caters to the needs of inmates who have been released from drug rehabilitation centres, based on qualitative interviews with the inmates. Research Interests My scholarly research interests range widely, from qualitative research methods, organised crime business, intellectual property law, human trafficking, social capital, political economy, economic sociology, and criminology theory. Policy-oriented, criminological researches have always been my interests. It is this interest which persuaded me to undertake my role as principal researcher on the SMU Research Grant in 4
