5 JOINT PROGRAMS Also referred to as Consortium Agreements May or may not lead to a degree Formal agreement that takes advantage of collective resources and expertise of more than one institution Students have a Home Campus for admission, registration/records, tuition and graduation purposes Students take classes at home and partner institution Institutions agree upon catalogued courses Often offered via distance-education NDSU examples: Tri-College University (NDSU, Concordia, MSUM) Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (GPIDEA) MLS Western College Alliance
6 JOINT DEGREES Two or more institutions approved to award a shared degree for a program of study Curriculum and faculty are shared Both institutions may be represented on diploma and transcript Students typically have a home campus May also have joint degrees within an institution JD/MBA MD/PhD Pharm.D./Ph.D. Combined degrees (UGRD/GRAD)
7 DUAL PROGRAMS/DEGREES Students earn two degrees in different programs from two different institutions, but with shared course offerings. May be easier to facilitate within states with common student information systems. Students have a Home Campus for admission, registration/ records, tuition and graduation purposes. Students take courses at home and/or partner institutions and coursework is transferred accordingly Courses may or may not be offered at each other s campus or offered via distance-education VCSU/NDSU - Elementary Education + Human Dev & Family Science Minot SU/NDSU Social Work + Human Develop & Family Science UND/Benedictine Chemistry + Chemical Engineering
8 CONSIDERATIONS Are external courses catalogued? How are students registered at each campus? How will external credit appear on the home academic record and transcript? Transferred credit or residence credit? Included in institutional GPA and credit totals? What are options and limitations within SIS? How are students counted for enrollment purposes? Are external students included in headcounts of campus offering course? Are students included in home campus headcounts when courses are taken elsewhere in a given term?
9 CONSIDERATIONS, CONT. Will money be exchanged between institutions? If so, how? If not, are limits set on number of host students accepted by each campus? How are students tracked for degree progress? What institutional policies are followed, e.g. grade appeals, academic standing rules. Which institution collects student fees and where may students access services? Which office coordinates/administers agreements? How often are agreements reviewed? By whom?
10 MASTER OF PUBLIC HEALTH - NDSU/UND New agreement between UND and NDSU to deliver an integrated MPH program Core courses catalogued at each campus (MPH prefix) Specialization/track courses offered by home institution Home campus processes admission, tracks student and confers degree Home campus academic standing rules apply, though grade appeals and academic honesty handled by impacted campus Set tuition collected by home campus, and reviewed annually to determine if money will be exchanged. Students counted for enrollment at home campus
11 MPH DETAILS Students admitted to the Host campus through a special MPH application process Registered in host campus classes at zero credits to exclude grades from cumulative/term totals Allows them to appear in class/grade rosters and learning management systems Students are registered in same class at home campus at full value Grades are provided to home campus where they are entered in student s academic record
12 RECOMMENDATIONS Be involved in negotiations from the beginning Communicate within your institution and office as well as with the partner institution Make sure everyone understands how students will be registered, billed and counted. Be open, flexible and a problem solver but protect your institution and its academic policies/integrity Consider accreditation implications Regularly review agreement and practices
