2 Course Type On site Course Length 2 years (minimum) Study Attendance Part - time Course Overview D59I is a qualifying course in psychodynamic psychotherapy delivered within the NHS. Accredited by the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC), it equips its graduates to work as independent practitioners. This course not only offers a recognised qualification as a psychodynamic psychotherapist, but its unique approach in relation to inter-cultural issues offers you the opportunity to develop the clinical skills which are necessary in the context of working in multi-cultural Britain. Course outline The course consists of the following elements: personal psychotherapy theoretical seminar clinical seminar treatment of 2 once weekly psychotherapy patients individual supervision assessment workshop infant observation personal tutorials Years One and Two During the course you will treat two psychotherapy patients, once weekly, within the Adult Department of the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust. Patients are seen for at least 1 year each. The two patients may be seen concurrently.

3 Individual supervision One-to-one supervision provides support for your clinical work and an opportunity to reflect on both the experience of the patient and therapist. Personal tutor Termly individual tutorials are a chance to discuss and monitor your progress on the course and to think about future training opportunities. Year One Theoretical seminars The theoretical seminars aim to deepen and enrich your understanding of psychoanalytic theory, with an emphasis on the need to develop a theoretical framework to help you understand how issues of culture and race manifest in your clinical work. Clinical seminars The clinical seminars involve a presentation of a supervised clinical case and explore theoretical issues in the context of clinical work. Year Two Assessment workshop The workshop is an opportunity to consider theoretical issues pertinent to the assessment for psychotherapy and issues of clinical technique. You will hear presentations of assessments from experienced staff and have the opportunity to undertake a supervised assessment if appropriate. Infant observation You will observe an infant in a home setting and make detailed recordings of your experience which are discussed in a small group to explore the conscious and unconscious meanings of the events observed. The course provides part two of a unique training for work in the NHS and public sector.

4 Assessment Your progress is discussed and assessed at the Assessment and Progression Board, which is held at the end of each term and attended by all D59I staff. Reports by all seminar leaders and supervisors' commenting on each student are written in February and June. All reports are available to the Assessment and Progression Board. You will receive copies of the reports and will have the opportunity to discuss these with your personal tutor. You are also required to submit a bi-annual report on your patients. Attendance The course takes place on Wednesdays at the Tavistock Centre and runs from 11.15am until 4.30pm. Generally, individual supervision takes place at the Tavistock Centre on Wednesdays, however, if it is necessary, this can be arranged to take place elsewhere and on a different day of the week. You will also need to make time available to see two patients, and time for an infant observation during the second year. These components are arranged by you at a time convenient for all parties. Duration This course can be completed in a minimum of two years, part-time. Academic award Upon successful completion of this course, you will earn a BPC accreditation as a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist, as well as gaining membership of the Tavistock Society of Psychotherapists. Entry requirements This course is open to applicants with an initial psychodynamic clinical training (comparable to D58) in psychotherapy, including two years supervised psychotherapy work with a patient. You must also have had at least two years of weekly personal psychotherapy with a BPC accredited psychoanalytic psychotherapist. Personal suitability for the work is an important factor. For CPD purposes, you must have a regognized psychotherapy qualification. Fees For UK students starting in 2014, fees will be 3,700 per year Course dates

6 Schooll of Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy (NSCAP), Leeds, and runs from 3.15pm until 6.00pm. Generally, individual supervision takes place at the Tavistock on Wednesdays between 1 and 3pm, however, if it is necessary, this can be arranged to take place outside NSCAP and on a different day of the week. You will also need to make time available to see 2 patients, and time for an infant observation during the second year. These components are arranged by tou at a time convenient for all parties.
