The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) promote the adoption of a specific emergency preparedness standard originally developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and known as NFPA

15 The National Standard on Disaster/Emergency Management and Business Continuity Programs (NFPA 1600) is recommended as "the standard of care" for businesses to their employees and the general public.
