1 University of Oslo Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages P.b.1010 Blindern 0315 Oslo Sanskrit 3+4 (SAN2130) autumn 2009: INFORMATION ABOUT THE STAY IN INDIA A stay in India during the fall semester is a mandatory part of Sanskrit 3+4 (SAN2130). In 2009, the semester will be from 14 September to 11 December, excluding the religious/government holidays. The teaching will take place at the Kuppuswami Sastri Research Institute in Chennai. Language training at the Kuppuswami Sastri Research Institute The language of instruction will be English and Sanskrit. Teaching consist of 20 teaching periods (a 45 minutes) per week, that is 4 periods per day + 6 lectures during the three modules. Form of instruction depends on the requirements (lectures, tutorials, discussions, practical hands-on experience, seminars/presentations, take-home assignments etc.). Evaluation will consist of continuous assessment and a final exam-like assessment at the end of the semester. A certificate is issued only when at least 75% of the classes are attended (of course apart from illness and other legitimate reasons). The evaluation from the KSRI is the precondition of the exam held in Oslo, early in the spring semester. The teaching will be given in three modules: Module 1 (First month) 1. Drama - Pratima Nataka of Bhasa 2. Poetry - Ramodantam 3. Prose - Kathasangraha 4. Grammar - Bhandarkar (First Book) and Spoken Sanskrit Module 2 (Second month) 1. Drama - Pratima Nataka (Contd.) 2. Poetry - Ramodantam (Contd.) 3. Prose - Laghu Kadambari Sangraha 4. Grammar - Bhandarkar and Spoken Sanskrit Module 3 (Third month) 1. Introduction to Darsanas and technical literature 2. Poetry - Ist Canto of Raghuvamsa or Kumarasambhava 3. Poetics - Candraloka (select Alankaras), Subhasitas and Prahelikas 4. Spoken Sanskrit - Higher level

2 APPLICATION Students must apply to the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages. The department: Use the enclosed application form. Only students who have attended SAN1110 and SAN1120 with passing marks will be admitted. The application form should be delivered or sent to Student Advisor for South Asian studies Guro Flinterud. Deadline: 15 May You also have to hand in the form Opplysningsskjema og egenerklæring vedrørende studieopphold i utlandet i regi av UiO. This form must be handed in, in order to get support from Lånekassen. TRAVEL SUPPORT (Lånekassen) The stay is supported financially by Lånekassen after current rules, see aspx Support for part time studies abroad is normally given in three main parts: Basic support (8 140 kroner of stipend and loan pr month) Travel support is given for one return trip from Norway to the place of study when the stay is shorter than six months. Travel support is given as 70% stipend and 30% loan. Support for tuition fee up to kr per semester for studies outside of the Nordic countries. Tuition fees are financed as stipend and loan, to partly or completely cover tuition fees. The first kr per semester will be financed as 70% stipend and 30% loan. The remaining part is given as loan up to the limit of kr per semester. How to apply: through the internet application. It is easy and safe, and the application will be answered quickly aspx The internet application form opens in May. If you apply within the end of May, you will usually have the gjeldsbrev/stipendmelding by the end of June. INSURANCE Lånekassen sends a report to Folketrygdkontoret for utenlandssaker ( concerning studies abroad for students who are given loan and stipend from Lånekassen. Students who are not eligible for loan or who do not apply for loan through Lånekassen must report to Folketrygdkontoret themselves. Insurance through Folketrygdkontoret is only valid for illness. Those of you who wish to have additional insurance may for instance use favourable insurance arrangements through their card companies or through membership in ANSA ( Students mus document health insurance.

3 VISA Students must apply for student visa to India themselves. Processing time is normally approximately 5 days for ethnical Norwegians. It is advisable to apply early, particularly if one is not going to be in Oslo during the summer. Application whould be handed in at the visa department at the Indian Embassy, Niels Juels gate 30 (Frogner). Webside: Necessary documentation which should be enclosed with the application form: Letter of acceptance from the place of study in India and information regarding economy with regards to the stay in India. TRAVEL The students are themselves responsible for plane tickets to India and back. Remember to buy tickets early, as planes fill up quickly. It is advisable to check prices at different airlines before ordering. Students should estimate some time between the exam date and departure for India, as it might take some time to get your visa. You cannot apply for a visa before the exam in SAN1120 is passed and you have received the letter of acceptance from IKOS. VACCINATION Students are themselves responsible for taking the acquired vaccination. Some vaccinations, (for instance Havrix) must be taken in several rounds, so one should start with the vaccination some time before departure. Read the information on the homepage for Folkehelseinstituttets: TRANSPORT AND ACCOMODATION The students are formally responsible for accommodation, although Ute Hüsken and KSRI will assist in this. The best solution would be for the students to rent an apartment together. Local transport is the students own responsibility. CURRENCY Bring USD or Euro to change to Rupee on arrival. Forøvrig kan bankkort/kredittkort benyttes i mange minibanker og banker, og i de fleste store hoteller og restauranter. Maksimumsuttak fra en minibank er for tiden Rupee. Ellers er det nyttig å vite at man kan både veksle og ta ut penger på for eksempel Thomas Cook. TUITION FEE The tuition fee for KSRI is 1500,- Euros. The fee must be payed on arrival as draft cheque.
