1 Derbyshire Strategic Partnership JSNA Briefing April 2009 Introduction This JSNA briefing describes the accompanying data about estimates for the percentage of people who binge drink in Derbyshire. It identifies areas where the percentage of people who binge drink are abnormally high, and compares Derbyshire with national and regional rates. Additional data allows for in depth analysis at Middle Super Output Area (MSOA) level to allow further comparisons to be made against other lifestyle risks i.e.. smoking healthy eating and obesity. Analysis The Health Survey for England (HfSE) is carried out annually asking questions about the health of people living in England. Data from the surveys has been used to create estimates, based upon population characteristics of local authorities, of the percentage of people who binge drink; adults who consume at least twice the daily recommended amount of alcohol in a single drinking session (that is, 8 or more units for men and 6 or more units for women). The healthy lifestyle measure for binge drinking was generated from the data collected in the HSfE about the quantities of all the different types of alcoholic drinks (beer, wine, spirits, sherry and alcopops) consumed on a respondent s heaviest drinking day in the previous week. These measures were combined to give the number of units of alcohol consumed on the heaviest drinking day. Binge drinking was then defined separately for men and women: men were defined as having indulged in binge drinking if they had consumed 8 or more units of alcohol on the heaviest drinking day in the previous seven days; for women the cut-off was 6 or more units of alcohol. Of the 28,662 adults in the HSfEs, 5,231 (18%) were defined to have indulged in binge drinking. The ONS latest News Release published on 22/01/09 stated that "over a third of adults exceed the daily limits for regular drinking on at least one day during the week, despite growing awareness of safe drinking levels". The press release also stated "that more people in "managerial" and "professional" households exceeded the daily limits on their heaviest drinking day of the week (43%) whilst those in "routine" or "manual" households reported" (31%).see: Additionally the NHS Information published a report Statistics on Alcohol in England 2009 on 20/05/09. This report presented a range of information from a variety of published sources to provide detailed analysis on all aspects of alcohol consumption. It aims to present a broad picture of health issues relating to alcohol in England and covers topics such as drinking habits and behaviours among adults and school children, drinkingrelated, ill-health and mortality, affordability of alcohol and alcohol-related costs. We have included a data extract from the datasets accompanying this report within this JSNA briefing and all other alcohol related datasets within this JSNA. Theheadlinekey factsfrom thisreport relatingspecificallyto bingedrinkingwere that25% of men and16% of women reporteddrinkingover8unitsformenand6unitsforwomen -onatleastonedayintheweekpriorto interview. Additionally in % of men reported drinking more than 21 units in an average week. For women 20% reported drinking more than 14 units in an average week. Binge drinking has become an accepted activity within many sections of the population, both young and old. In 2007 in England there were 6,541 deaths directly related to alcohol; this has increased by 19 per cent since Of these alcohol related deaths, the majority (4,249) died from alcoholic liver disease. 1

2 Derbyshire Strategic Partnership JSNA Briefing April 2009 The data set - NHSstats onalcohol shows the regionalpercentage of bingedrinkersin 2009 was; for all adults 21%; men 26%; were slightly higher that the national percentage of 21% all adults; and 25% men. Whilst the percentage of women binge drinkers in the region was the same as the national average of 16%. Datasets and Methodology are available to download here : : Themodelbasedestimates fromonsfor showsthatover17%ofthepopulationofderbyshireare binge drinkers. There is little variation across the County. High Peak has the highest estimated percentage of binge drinkers, 18.0%, and South Derbyshire has the lowest, 17.1%. The data at Middle Super Output level highlights pockets of much higher percentages of binge drinkers the highest percentage within each district being: Amber Valley - Somercotes North East % Bolsover -Bolsover North West - 20% Chesterfield - Barrow hill and Hollingwood and Dunston & Whittington Moor both % Derbyshire Dales - Matlock North % Erewash - Long Eaton Centre % High Peak - Hadfield West and Gamesley % North East Derbyshire - Holmewood % South Derbyshire - Church Gresley & Woodville % Whilst this data shows that Derbyshire is average for binge drinking in comparison to the region, the data is based on population characteristics and may not reflect the true extent of binge drinking within the county. This dataset should be used in conjunction with all other briefing documents within this JSNA to ensure a balanced view - data such as alcohol related admissions for the County should be taken into consideration in order to gain a broader view of how alcohol affects health within Derbyshire. Further data is also available from Local Area Profiles for England (LAPE). These are local area profiles of alcohol - related harms comprising 23 indicators: For further information contact: Chris McManus T: E chris.mcmanus@derbyshirecountypct.nhs.uk 2

3 METADATA Title Model based estimates for the percentage of people who binge drink Subject Behaviours - Alcohol Description This data estimates the percentage of people who binge drink Contributor Office for National Statistics Creator John Jenkins from ONS data - see link below Contact Chris McManus; chris.mcmanus@derbyshirecountypct.nhs.uk Date of Creation 16/07/08 Date of data Jan Dec 2005 Data quality These estimates must be used with caution. They will almost certainly not mirror precisely any available measures from local studies or surveys (although research by NatCen and others have shown that they tend to be related). The modelbased approach generates estimates that are of a different nature from standard survey estimates because they are dependent upon correctly specifying the relationship between individual healthy lifestyle behaviours and the census/administrative information about the area in which people reside. The main limitation of estimates for small areas, either those estimated directly from responses to surveys or model-based, is that they are subject to variability. NatCen have produced confidence intervals associated with the model-based estimates in order to make the accuracy of the estimates clear. In addition, the model - based estimates do not take account of any additional local factors that may impact on the true prevalence rate (e.g. local initiatives designed to reduce smoking). This also applies to other factors not covered by the census and administrative data used for modelling. The estimates, therefore, cannot be used to monitor perf Coverage Derbyshire Geography Derbyshire districts Rights Freely available but source should be quoted in all publications Frequency of update Ad Hoc Scope Further info./links Data Item Descriptions Report on drinking ONS published 22/01/09 Data Item name Drinking: adults behaviour and knowledge in 2008 Statistics on Alcohol - Report published 20/09/09
