1 Public Health Informatics and Surveillance Fellowship Disability and Health Branch Division of Human Development and Disability National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Atlanta, GA CDC-NCBDDD Project Description: A research opportunity is available with the Disability and Health Branch of the Division of Human Development and Disability (DHDD) in the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Branch works to prevent disease and promote equity in health for people with disabilities through surveillance and epidemiology, research, program, and policy. The Branch maintains the Disability and Health Data System (DHDS), an interactive, online query tool for obtaining state-level surveillance data on disability and health. The Branch also maintains a SharePoint site to share information and resources with the 18 states and five Public Health Practice and Resource Centers with funded Disability and Health programs, as well as several Wiki sites that are used by internal staff. Opportunities may include: Identifying existing evidence-based health promotion interventions targeting people with disabilities, determining ways to adapt interventions for people with disabilities, and identifying areas where additional intervention research is needed for this population. Designing, implementing, and maintaining a web-based data query system and websites, including SharePoint and Wiki sites, to share information with internal and external partners. Conducting analyses related to comparative health surveillance of people with and without disabilities to identify health disparities. Making presentations, preparing reports, and submitting manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals. The Research Participation Program for CDC is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). The appointment is for one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and subject to availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend depending on educational level and experience. The participant must show proof of health insurance. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid. A stipend supplement for health insurance may be available.

2 Qualifications: A Master s degree in a public health program with an interest in public health informatics and surveillance. Applicants must have received this degree within the last five years, or must expect to complete all requirements for such a degree prior to starting the fellowship. Training or experience in one or more of these disciplines is preferred: informatics, computer science, epidemiology, or surveillance. Experience with website development, including working with CSS and HTML files, is preferred. Familiarity with SAS, ASPX, MS Access, XML, and VBA scripts is preferred. 3 Public Health Analyst Fellowship Division of STD Prevention The National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Atlanta, GA CDC-NCHHSTP Project Description: A fellowship opportunity is available within the Global Activities Unit of the Division of STD Prevention (DSTDP) of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). DSTDP s mission is to provide national leadership, research, policy development, and scientific information to help people live safer, healthier lives by the prevention of STDs and their complications. DSTDP s priority global activities are supporting the global elimination of congenital syphilis, establishing global surveillance for antimicrobial resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and improving diagnostics and surveillance for sexually transmitted infections (STI). Opportunities may include: Overseeing and assembling complex epidemiologic and laboratory survey data describing STI policies, protocols, program data, and/or diagnostic testing Assuring data quality, accuracy, and completeness Conducting bio-statistical data analysis, primarily involving quantitative data collected on standardized reporting forms Collaborating periodically with CDC and possibly World Health Organization (WHO) technical consultants who will clarify and guide analyses Developing written technical reports describing survey or other analysis findings, including tables, figures, and graphs. Reports are anticipated to be published, with results disseminated to relevant public health agencies such as CDC and/or WHO. Report results are likely to affect STD policy and practices in participating nations in the region. Co-authoring scientific abstracts, papers, and reports for publication and presentation at scientific meetings The Research Participation Program for CDC is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend depending on educational level and experience. The participant must show proof of health insurance. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia,

Qualifications: A Master s degree in Epidemiology, Statistics, Biostatistics, Public Health, or similar relevant educational background is required. Applicants must have received their degree within the last five years, or must expect to complete all requirements for such a degree prior to starting the fellowship. Knowledge and experience in quantitative analysis techniques, including facility in at least one commonly-used, quantitative software package, is required. Experience with the SAS software package is preferred. Previous experience in technical scientific report writing and in publishing is required, preferably with prior publications in an epidemiologic or statistical journal. 5 Public Health Billing Fellowship Office of the Director The National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Atlanta, GA CDC-NCHHSTP Project Description: A fellowship opportunity is available in the Office of the Director (OD) of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). NCHHSTP OD provides leadership to help coordinate efforts and foster collaboration across the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention, the Division of Viral Hepatitis, the Division of STD Prevention, the Division of TB Elimination, and the Division of Adolescent and Student Health. The NCHHSTP billing project is an effort to work with NCHHSTP divisions, CDC subject matter experts, and external partners to compile information and develop guidance to help health departments bill third party payers (including Medicaid, CHIP, and private insurance carriers) for HIV/AIDs, viral hepatitis, STD, and/or TB preventive services rendered and secure reimbursed funds, while preserving patient confidentiality. Under the direction of the Center s Senior Advisor and Prevention Through Health Care subject matter experts from the Divisions, the participant may have the following research opportunities: Develop a network of appropriate subject matter experts from NCHHSTP programs, CDC, federal agencies, and external partners Facilitate communication and coordinate activities across project collaborators to assure gaps in building the capacity for health departments to bill third party payers and be reimbursed for their services are being addressed without duplicating efforts Identify state/local billing resources useful for all state programs and assemble the identified resources into a database or spreadsheet Contribute to the development of billing resources that includes information about billing that may be relevant for programs and program-specific guidance on implementing efficient billing practices The Research Participation Program for CDC is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). 7 Public Health Evaluation Fellowship Office for State, Tribal, Local, and Territorial Support Division of Public Health Performance Improvement Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Atlanta, GA CDC-OSTLTS Project Description: A research opportunity is available at the Office for State, Tribal, Local, and Territorial Support (OSTLTS) in the Division of Public Health Performance Improvement (DPHPI) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The chosen participant will be working with the CDC s National Public Health Performance Improvement Initiative (NPHII). NPHII is a fiveyear cooperative agreement, supported through the Prevention and Public Health Fund of the Affordable Care Act, to fund 74 state, tribal, local, and territorial health departments to make fundamental changes and enhancements in their organizations and practices that improve delivery and impact of public health services. Opportunities may include: Gaining training and experience in the application of evaluation methods and techniques to public health programs Working on a program funded through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Learning about quality improvement (QI) and performance improvement (PI) methods Exploring the relationship between QI/PI and evaluation within the context of state, tribal, local, and territorial public health agencies The Research Participation Program for CDC is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend depending on educational level and experience. The participant must show proof of health insurance. Experience presenting data analysis results, reporting and summarizing evaluation findings in plain language documents and reports to diverse stakeholder audiences is preferred. 9 Public Health Annual Survey Fellowship Office for State, Tribal, Local, and Territorial Support Division of Public Health Performance Improvement Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Atlanta, GA CDC-OSTLTS Project Description: A research opportunity is available at the Office for State, Tribal, Local, and Territorial Support (OSTLTS) in the Division of Public Health Performance Improvement (DPHPI) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The chosen participant will be involved with the CDC s Technical Assistance and Services Improvement Initiative Annual Surveys and other evaluation projects involving survey methods. The Technical Assistance and Service Improvement Initiative was established to improve the agency s support and assistance to state, tribal, local, and territorial health agencies receiving federal funds through CDC cooperative agreements. Opportunities may include: Assess and evaluate the agency s technical assistance and customer service to CDCfunded grantees within this high-profile, cross-cutting initiative Conduct complex surveys using problem solving skills in novel, real-world conditions Experience and learn how CDC supports, resources, and delivers technical assistance and customer service to CDC-funded grantees Identify areas within CDC technical assistance and customer service for improvement The Research Participation Program for CDC is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).
