2 Membership THERE ARE BIG CHANGES IN OUR MEMBERSHIP FOR 2014! Become a member of College Park Aviation Museum and join a growing team of friends, volunteers, and staff committed to sharing the story of one of the world s most important sites in aviation history. The benefits of museum membership include: Q A museum membership card Q Unlimited FREE admission to the museum for one year Q 15% discount at the Prop Shop museum store Q Advance notice of all programs and special events Q Reduced admission to select workshops and special events Q FREE and unlimited use of the museum library Q The knowledge that you are helping promote a public interest in aviation history Most importantly, as a member you will join a select group of individuals contributing to the preservation and interpretation of this important historic site. MEMBERSHIP OPTIONS Family Membership: $50 per year, includes up to 4 family members; $15 each additional family member. Families may include grandparents, etc. Individual Membership: $25 per year Baron s Club Membership: $25 per year, for children 2-12 years old and includes FREE admission for one adult when Baron s Club member is present. SMITHSONIAN ADD-ON Add the Smithsonian Affiliation to your membership for an additional $20. The Smithsonian Affiliation reciprocating program has 35 participating museums and museum admission is FREE to all members of participating museums. Additionally, the Affiliation Membership Program offers: Q A one year subscription to either Smithsonian OR Air & Space Magazine Q 10% discount on Smithsonian Folkways Recordings and IMAX tickets Q Travel and study opportunities Q FREE admission to the Smithsonian s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum On the Cover The father and son team of Emile and Henry Berliner flew their helicopter at College Park Airport 90 years ago on February 24, 1924 making the first controlled helicopter flight. Their aircraft flew 15 feet high, in a circle with a 150 foot radius, while maintaining a speed of 40 mph. College Park Aviation Museum, Berliner Collection

Admission Fees Adults $4.00 Seniors (60+) $3.00 Groups (10+) $3.00 Children/Students $2.00 School Tours College Park Aviation Museum offers a variety of educational tours which utilize our permanent exhibits and include interactive, hands-on activities to extend learning beyond the classroom, and to excite students about the history and science of flight. Our tours are designed to address grade-appropriate Common Core and Maryland educational standards, and can be modified to accommodate a wide range of learning abilities. We also offer in-class educational outreach programs. Call the museum to learn more! CONSIDER CONTRIBUTING to the Combined Federal Campaign #28187 Field of Firsts Foundation to benefit the College Park Aviation Museum. Meet our New Director Andrea Cochrane Tracey Ms. Cochrane Tracey brings over 20 years of experience in the museum and non-profit sectors to her role as the Museum Director at College Park Aviation Museum. Prior to joining the staff at the aviation museum, Andrea worked as the Museum Director for the Saco Museum in Maine, a regional history museum with a collection of over 10,000 artifacts representing local and regional history and as a Museum Administrator with Historic New England (Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities). Her experience also includes working as a Preservation Specialist with an architectural firm in Maine where she worked on a diverse range of preservation projects for small museums. Ms. Cochrane Tracey holds a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and a Master of Science in Historic Preservation with a concentration in Museum Management from the University of Pennsylvania. If you would like staff at College Park Aviation Museum to open a SMARTlink account for you, please call us or stop by the museum and we will be happy to oblige. Montgomery and Prince George s County residents need to provide proof of residency. Children need to provide a current student ID or birth certificate. Once your SMARTlink account is opened, you may register for programs, activities and events offered by the Prince George s County Department of Parks and Recreation on line, by phone, by mail, or in person. 4 COLLEGE PARK PARK PROGRAMS Peter Pan Club Every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month at 10:30 am FREE with museum admission. Come to the Peter Pan Club for some preschool fun. Ideal for little learners up to five years old, the club includes story-time and hands-on craft activities. To schedule a group larger than 10, please call the museum to make a private group reservation. Kite Workshop Friday, July 11, 2 pm $8 per participant Spend the afternoon at the museum building and decorating your own kite. The $8 workshop fee covers museum admission and the price of one kite kit. Please call the museum in advance to register. Airmail Day Tuesday, August 12, 1 3 pm FREE with museum admission Celebrate the anniversary of the first airmail flight out of College Park Airport with airmailthemed activities throughout the museum. National Model Aviation Day Saturday, August 16, 10 am 2 pm $8 workshop fee Learn all about model airplanes! The Sky Lancers of Washington will be flying their control line model airplanes and offering training flights. A workshop to make your own static model airplane will be also be available. Please call the museum in advance to register for the workshop. Trains and Planes Saturday, August 30 through Monday, September 1 FREE with museum admission. Miniature trains, villages, tunnels, and depots spark the imagination as they bring history to life. The National Capital Trackers bring a fascinating and constantly moving display of model railroads to the museum. Army soldiers carry a partially disassembled Wright airplane behind the Rex Smith hangar at College Park, The aircraft s tail lies on the ground beside them. 5 Cycle through Aviation History History Saturday, September 6, 10 am Rain Date: Sunday, September 7, 10 am $5 per participant Discover 250 years of flight in a guided bicycle tour along the Anacostia River trails, from the first balloon flight in America to intriguing 20th century inventions and industry. The ride will be a flat 10 mile loop with snacks provided; some riding on quiet streets, but mostly off-road, paved trails. Bring your bicycle and helmet. Persons 16 & under must be accompanied by an adult. Please call the museum in advance to register. Scout Wings Day Saturday, October 4, 10 am 2 pm $4 per participant Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of all levels are welcome to explore the history of aviation and science of flight with a variety of fun, educational activities that count towards badge requirements. Please call the museum in advance to register. Smithsonian Museum Day Saturday, September 27 Doors will be open FREE of charge to Smithsonian magazine readers and Smithsonian.com visitors at museums and cultural institutions nationwide. Any visitor plus one guest who present a Museum Day Admission Card will receive FREE admission to the museum this day. Haunted Hangar Saturday, October 25, 7 9 pm $4 per participant Wear your costume and join in the Halloween fun at the annual Haunted Hangar event. Arts, crafts, hayrides, and spooky fun are waiting for kids and families. Around the World with Wilbur Wright Saturday, November 1, 12 noon 3 pm FREE with museum admission. See the world without even leaving the museum. College Park Aviation Museum invites you to participate in a fun and educational tour of the museum, where you can make your own passport, visit places around the world, and learn a little bit about aviation history. Visit the museum s front lobby area to get started on your trip around the world!
6 Homeschool Day Monday, November 3, 11 am 2 pm $4 per participant Home-Schooled students of all ages and their parent-educators are invited to the museum for a day of learning and adventure. Aviation themed activities and crafts will address learning in science, math, language, and art. Please call the museum in advance to register. Santa Fly-In Saturday, December 6, 12 noon 4 pm FREE with museum admission Watch Santa fly into the historic College Park Airport and then have your picture taken with him. Holiday arts and crafts will also be offered throughout the museum. Wright Aeroplane Rib- Making Workshop Saturday, November 22, 1 pm $7 per participant The workshop will begin with a demonstration and then participants will build their own 1909 Wright wing rib. The $7 workshop fee includes supplies and museum admission Please call the museum in advance to register. Private group workshops can also be scheduled. Holiday Trains and Planes Saturday, December 13 Saturday, December 20 FREE with museum admission During the holiday season College Park Aviation Museum gets ready for the festivities as miniature trains, villages, tunnels, and depots spark the imagination and bring history to life. 7 EXHIBITS Destinations Through September 26 Do you ever wonder where people fly when they leave from College Park Airport? We have asked airport pilots and patrons to share pictures of their destinations over the summer. photo: courtesy pgpd Flying Force: The Prince George s County Police Aviation Unit Through August 29 Did you know College Park Airport is home to two police helicopters? Flying Force gives a behind-the-scenes look at the history and daily life of the police aviation unit. Spectacular large-format photographs will give you a bird s eye view of a day in a chopper! Envisioning the Future of College Park Airport Through August 29 First year graduate students from Morgan State University spent the spring semester envisioning the future of a general aviation airport in College Park, Maryland and its potential in 100 years. Five of the final studio design projects are on display in the museum through August. Veterans History Project Our veterans and their stories are important to remember and College Park Aviation Museum tries to do that...not just on Veterans Day but every day of the year. The Veterans History Project encourages veterans and civilians associated with the war efforts from World War II to the Iraqi conflict to share their experiences and document their service. The museum tapes interviews and sends them to the Library of Congress. Each veteran who participates receives a copy of their interview and free admission to the museum.
