1 Student 4M 1 Student 4M ENGL Mr. McCarty February 12, 2014 Cures for Everything With all the new technology that we have come across in these past years has there been a discovery to cure borderline personality disorder. As the years have progressed scientists have found or are close to finding cures for illnesses that we once thought would never have a cure. Illnesses such as chicken pox, diphtheria, measles, etc. Scientist have had long days and endless nights trying to find what substances work for certain illnesses. Scientist come up with treatments for what now seems to be every possible thing that can happen to a human illness wise but what about mental disorders. Can disorders such as borderline personality disorder be cured? Many illnesses that at one point had no cure have one or are close to getting one. Knowing that borderline personality disorder has recently increased its numbers should make it a priority for scientists and psychologists to pinpointing any cure possible whether it be any type of therapy or medication. Although borderline personality disorder has just recently resurfaced in the light of scientist and psychologist due to the amount of diagnosed people in present time, this disorder has been around for years now. Borderline personality disorder became evident to the clinical observations of Adolph Stern in the year 1938 (Gunderson, 5-9). Adolph Stern had patients that did not classify under any existing disorder category that was already presented to them. By the

2 Student 4M 2 early 1950 s, with the help of Robert Knight's influential papers, Adolph's patients started being more widely known. Research was done to have answers for a diagnostic, which is where borderline personality disorder was officially born. John G. Gunderson s book demonstrates a chart on page ten of age ranks and the percentage of those who have it, making it clear that anyone is prone to this disorder. Borderline personality disorder is said to be a mental disorder that enhances intense mood swings, impulsive behaviors, and severe problems with self-worth within humans stated in an article WebMD. These three involuntary reactions might not seem like a great deal, but all three at once can seriously trouble a humans relationship and their day to day life. This borderline personality disorder showed its first signs in early childhood but goes undetected until early adulthood, where it is now a cause of problems presented. According to WebMD, there is no precise cause to this disorder which makes it difficult to find a cure. Borderline personality disorder is often triggered by childhood traumas such as abuse, neglect, or in some cases close deaths. Due to the knowledge scientists and psychologists have on this it has become easy to pinpoint the cause of their disorder but difficult for a disorder carrier to admit they have a disorder.when diagnosing a person with personality disorder the usual symptoms are intense emotions and mood swings, harmful impulsive behaviors, relationship problems, aggressive behavior, feeling empty, problems with anger, and even attempts of suicide. One must not have all these symptoms but a great amount to be diagnosed (WebMD). Knowing that there is not just one cause for this disorder makes it hard to find the exact cure for it. If it can even be called a cure. Based on an article on the site "Psychological Care & Healing," borderline personality disorder is a category name in which many other disorder fall under. Disorders such as Schizoid Personality Disorder, Dependent Personality Disorder,

3 Student 4M 3 Antisocial Personality Disorder, and many others. This makes it hard to give a patient treatment. If a psychologist were to prescribe anti depressants, which is usually the case for many of these disorders, they could be harming the patient. This is where the controversy between taking them to the therapist or doing a treatment comes in play. Depending on the severeness of their disorder, according to "Psychological Care & Healing," a once per week psychotherapy or medication may be inadequate to the seriousness of the personality disorder. A treatment facility, like PCH Treatment Center, is an option that may be a more effective than just a simple therapy. This is especially useful for the person with a personality disorder that is not resistant to their current treatment situation. A solution to borderline personality disorder according to Sadie F. Dingfelder from Treatment for the 'Untreatable,' states that a way to cure this incurable disorder is mental services as mentioned before. Although there might not be a direct and definite cure to borderline personality disorder, Sadie suggest, the key is to get emotions under control. Simply that can calm and show a difference in a human's behavior. Sadie mentioned that carriers of the disorder don't seek the help nor the treatment needed to better themselves, which is why in her article she mentions that family support if anything can be the best help one can receive. American Psychiatric Press Review of Psychiatry, a book on how to find a way to help those with disorders, talks about cognitive and behavior therapy is the best way. In section 1 chapter 3 it focuses on the effect that families have on the patient. One can help the patient by keeping them calm and worry free. They can also let the patient vent what they are feeling or basically anything they want to let out(tasman, 49-63). This will help the person be sane within themselves which will eventually not trigger any episodes of any kind. Also in chapter 5 of this book it is emphasized that cognitive and behavior therapy is a great cure for borderline

4 Student 4M 4 personality disorder. Cognitive therapy is a type of psychotherapy in which negative patterns of the self and the world are challenged in order to alter unwanted behavioral patterns or treat mood disorders such as depression. As for behavioral therapy, it is the treatment of a neurotic symptoms by training the patient's reactions to stimuli. All in all these two types of therapies are coping with the patient's unstable emotions that in the end cause themselves and the ones around them hurt. Cognitive and behavioral therapy seem to be the best bet to treat borderline personality disorder. That does not mean that every person that has this disorder is going to respond to it as everyone else. One might need medication such as antidepressants. Or they'll need counseling, or simple stuff such as healthy habits and someone to vent to at home. Whether one is aware that they have borderline personality disorder or not there are so-called 'cures' or better yet ways to improve them. They might not be spot on and they might eventually come back but they help improve ones state. Besides this hope is on the horizon as many researchers begin the search for more effective treatments to help those who seek it.
