4 2009 POSTGRADUATE School of Computer Science and Information Technology RMIT s School of Computer Science and Information Technology is renowned for research and teaching in the practical software-side of IT. Students ranked the School very highly for teaching excellence in the most recent surveys of 2006 and One of our professors was awarded an elite Australia-wide Carrick citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning in 2007, and another has been appointed to the Australian Research Council s College of Excellence. The School has two full-time staff members, with postgraduate degrees in education, who are on-call exclusively to students in the School of Computer Science and Information Technology (CSIT). We currently have approximately 60 PhD students. All Australian universities together award a single prize for the best PhD thesis across Australia. Of the most recent, the School of Computer Science and Information Technology has been awarded two out of four. We have approximately a 90 per cent employment rate for graduates. The CSIT industry advisory committee works with RMIT to ensure that programs are relevant to industry. Our committee and prize sponsors include Agilent Technologies, ANZ, Dimension Data, the Marlo Group, Hewlett Packard, IBM, the Australian Computer Society, Infosys, Microsoft, and Oracle. We are the leading provider of computer science and information technology programs in Victoria. All CSIT programs are run from the RMIT City campus located in the central business district of multi-cultural Melbourne. Conveniently, we are across the road from Melbourne Central train station in the heart of the city. RMIT s degree names The terms information technology, computer science, computing, information systems, informatics, information science and computer engineering are commonly used to name degrees around the world. Whether it s a Bachelor of Information Technology or Master of Information Systems, generally speaking the terms are not uniformly defined and cover different aspects. Not only can they cover different material in two different countries, even in the one city there can be two degrees with the same name, which have a very different focus. Importantly, prospective employers are guided by the list of specific courses which were completed as part of a degree rather than the degree name itself. The School of Computer Science and IT offers a choice of specialisations in each of the Masters degrees. These areas of specialisation are well recognised by industry and include: software engineering, computer security, networking and distributed systems, advanced databases, intelligent systems, web systems, bioinformatics, and search engines. There are many different directions from which the study of computers can be approached. All the degrees in the School of Computer Science and Information Technology approach from the standpoint of the software developer, team leader, software project manager or enterprise architect. The focus is on software, as opposed to hardware (engineering), business (management and/or logistics and planning) or information security (mathematics). It is not where you have come from with your first qualification, but rather where you want to be able to go. If you want to know all about software, then the programs described in this brochure will suit you. 2 RMIT 2009 Postgraduate computer science and Information Technology

5 Introduction Which masters degree is right for me? RMIT offers you a flexible program design, combined with practical, hands-on study. There are three related degrees, each of one-and-ahalf years duration full-time (or three years part-time): Master of Computing (MC062) Master of Information Technology (MC061) Master of Internet and Web Computing (MC063) The Master of Computer Science (MC060) is an extension of any of the above degrees (two years total full-time duration). Students are able to apply to transfer from any of these programs to the two-year Master of Computer Science at any stage during their studies. To help understand the differences, please refer to the case studies in the next column. For further advice, please ipgs@cs.rmit.edu.au Please note: part-time study is not available for international students. Case studies Leah runs a small business and wants to understand how computers solve business problems and how she can improve her business with new skills. Leah s focus is on the web and e-commerce, so she enrols in the Master of Internet and Web Computing (MC063). This degree suites Leah who wants to gain skills specifically connected to internet and web-based applications, rather than generalist software IT skills. Mona has an undergraduate degree, which included software courses. Initially, Mona considered enrolling in the Master of Information Technology (MC061) or a Master of Business, as she felt she already had technical skills from her first degree. However after talking to Mona it is apparent that much of her knowledge is theoretical and in reality Mona lacks technical skills. The Master of Computing (MC062) is the most flexible degree and ideal for students like Mona. Her choice of courses will be made when she enrols, and she won t have to relearn what she already knows. Mona can take courses that will improve her practical skills to ensure that she will be job-ready. RMIT staff will provide support and advice to help Mona decide on her area of specialisation. If she wants Mona can also enrol in the two year Master of Computer Science (MC060) or transfer into the Masters degree (with full credit transfer) after a semester of study. Talya completed her computer science and engineering degree and can easily write large programs in Java and C and has used UML tools in software design. She has also used SQL through systems such as Oracle. Talya knows about data communications and networking and she can understand concurrency control in operating systems as well as complexity of algorithms and the rudiments of artificial intelligence. Her knowledge is based on theory and practice, and she is ideally suited to undertake the Master of Information Technology (MC061). She wants to achieve advanced specialisation, leading to a better job or perhaps a PhD. Batsheva has been working in the software industry for a number of years and has become a software project manager. She is experienced in managing multiple projects and a number of employees and her IT skills are very good, although there may be some areas of technology that she wants to study. Ultimately, Batsheva wants to bridge the gap between the technical needs of her company and the business objectives by studying enterprise architecture. With three to five years of supervisory experience in IT, Batsheva should apply for the Master of Technology (Enterprise Architecture) (MC052). Nick is a teacher, Helen studied journalism and Ken once worked as a food scientist. Together with their friend Paul, who trained in electronics and communications engineering, they all share the common aim of enhancing their existing skill-base with a software computing oriented masters degree. They don t have much background, and the Master of Computing (MC062) is flexible enough to accommodate their varied backgrounds and the program will be carefully tailored to their specific knowledge-base. They also have the option of undertaking the Master of Computer Science (MC060) degree and being involved in Australian industry experience through 3

6 2009 POSTGRADUATE Computing Master of Computing RMIT program code MC062 CRICOS number B Location Melbourne City campus Mode and duration 1.5 years full-time or 3 years part-time Classes are generally held in the evenings from 5.30 pm. Part-time students are normally expected to attend two evenings each week. Full-time students are expected to attend four days per week. International students can only study full-time. After completing an undergraduate computing degree, many prospective students are still not job-ready because their education lacks a modern practical software focus. Non-computing students recognise the importance of multi-skilling by enhancing their previous education with a respected Masters qualification. Since each prospective student has a potentially different starting point, the first component of the degree aims to flexibly ensure that a solid foundation has been paved to prepare students to advance to a cutting edge specialisation in a chosen area. Areas of specialisation include advanced databases, bioinformatics, computer security, intelligent systems, networked and distributed systems, search engines, software engineering, and web-based computing. Specialisations are designed to achieve the type of mastery over an area that potentially allows students to gain critical technical knowledge that is required by software team leaders and software project managers. The School issues a letter for each graduate which identifies the specialisation undertaken. Pathways Students with IT qualifications or significant relevant work experience can apply for limited course exemptions and may be required to sit for a challenge test. Career outlook An acute shortage of software-trained IT specialists means graduates have excellent career prospects both in Australia and internationally. Graduates may work in diverse roles including analyst programmer, architect, business analyst, computer operator, consultant/functional consultant, database developer and administrator, software engineer, software network engineer, help desk/support, internet/multimedia development and management, network and systems, product management, project management, QA/testers, sales pre and post, security, team leaders, and technical writers.
