2 Geo-Seas - background Geological and geophysical data for the seabed and sub-seabed are an important category of marine and oceanographic data, with many uses For Europe a major share of these observations is collected and analysed by national geological surveys and research institutions. In addition, substantial volumes of data are collected by industry, government departments, academia and environmental organisations. These data are often deposited with the geological surveys and research institutes. The national geological surveys, members of EuroGeoSurveys, have extensively sampled and surveyed the seabed and sub-seabed of the European seas over recent decades. Research institutes complement this with samples, cores and geophysical data, both from European seas and the world oceans. However, it is currently not possible to federate separate national databases because of different nomenclatures, reference levels, formats, scales and coordinate systems, hampering: Direct use of primary data in an integrated way Generation and dissemination of transboundary and multidisciplinary datasets, products and services

3 Geo-Seas present infrastructure EU-funded projects EuroCore, EUMarsin and EuroSeismics ( ) have resulted in the EU-SEASED metadata service, providing an inventory of seabed samples, cores, and seismic surveys, held by the partners: > samples and cores, and > line kilometres of seismic survey data, mostly for European seas, but also for the world oceans. However: No longer state-of-the-art standards and technologies Only metadata, no unified data access and no data products A lot of manual work Metadata not based on the ISO19115 metadata standard as recommended in INSPIRE Mapping services not based on OGC standards EU-funded projects SEISCAN and SEISCANEX ( ) have resulted in rescue of old seismic reflection data from paper records. > TIFF-format images, representing line kilometres of seismic survey data, were generated, and archived in databases at partners in the UK and France. 5 SeaDataNet - Pan-European infrastructure SeaDataNet is operating and further developing an efficient Pan-European distributed infrastructure for managing marine and ocean data by connecting: 40 National Oceanographic Data Centres (NODC s), national oceanographic focal points, and ocean satellite data centres, in Europe these Data Centres are mostly divisions of major national marine research institutes and based in 35 countries, surrounding the European seas SeaDataNet makes good progress in ensuring a comparable quality of data sets and making data sets easily accessible on-line through a unique portal, while the data sets are stored and managed at the Data Centres.

7 Geo-Seas - objectives Provide user-access to harmonised marine geological and geophysical metadata and datasets in common, standard formats and ready for use, through a single data portal. Develop and provide new geological and geophysical data products and services to fulfil the diverse needs of end-user communities. BY Interconnecting the national marine geological and geophysical data centres of 17 European coastal countries and their data management systems, by adopting and adapting the SeaDataNet infrastructure approach, architecture and middleware components. Incorporating and upgrading the outputs of the EU-SeaSed and SEISCANEX projects. Sharing methodologies and standards, where possible and applicable, with GeoSciML developments and the One-Geology Europe and EMODNET Geology projects.

10 Geo-Seas specific objectives To expand the SeaDataNet infrastructure by including the network of national geological surveys and geological research institutes. To publish and maintain a common catalogues of available data, data products and services, managed by these organisations. To harmonise quality standards, and exchange formats, to facilitate access to and delivery of these data to the various user communities, from research, government and industry To provide federated, marine geological and geophysical datasets, ready for use in the user communities using middleware to access and deliver the data via the internet.

15 Geo-Seas - Relationship with other projects SeaDataNet: Geo-Seas will adopt and adapt the SeaDataNet approach, architecture and middleware components and will extend the SeaDataNet infrastructure EMODNet geology: All of the Geo-Seas national survey organisations are members of this network, aiming at delivering interoperable GIS layers at 1:1 Million scale for number of geological aspects for pilot sea-areas One-Geology Europe: Nearly all of the Geo-Seas national survey organisations are members of this GEMS project, which works on the European contribution to the geological layer for GEOSS. GMES GeoSciML Geological Surveys are working on GML as a global standard for sharing geo scientific data EU-SeaSed: Geo-Seas will use the existing metadata from the project as a starting point, upgrading and transforming the information to be ISO and INSPIRE compliant and accessible through the new Geo-Seas data portal. SEISCANEX: The outputs from the project will be incorporated and upgraded within Geo- Seas.

16 Geo-Seas SeaDataNet possible impact WP4.1: Analyse and where required, adapt the SeaDataNet metadata standard (Common Data Index ISO19115 compliant) for indexing geological data WP4.2: Analyse and where required, adapt the SeaDataNet metadata standard (Common Data Index ISO19115 compliant) for indexing geophysical data Analysing whether the present CDI metadata format and XML schema require extensions for including relevant characteristics of geological and geophysical data. To stay close to the original CDI format and schema is a pre-condition, because that will restrict the number of modifications to the various software tools and applications, and will make merging the SeaDataNet and Geo-Seas metadata in a unified interface easier.
