Questions or Suggestions about Sexual Anatomy?

HYGIENE After I go to the bathroom, I leave my hands wet as proof that I washed them. Matt, a seventh grader

Sweating it out Sweating has an important job-it helps to cool your body down when you are hot. You actually have 2 to 4 million sweat glands all over your body. Thanks to puberty, these glands not only become more active then before. They also begin to secrete different chemicals into the sweat that has a strong smelling odor. How do you know if you have unpleasant body odor? 1. Strange as it may seem, people with unpleasant body odor are are unable to smell their body odor. 2. You may have an unpleasant smell if you do not shower or bathe at least once a day. 3. Change clothes and underwear. 4. Air out shoes and socks to avoid stinky feet.

Getting Rid of the Smell Shower or take a bath every day Wear clean clothes, socks & underwear If underarms smell, try using a deodorant/deodorant w/antiperspirant Remember: nothing smells better than clean skin. Perfumes/body spray are Not a good substitute for a shower or washing up!

Scoop on skin care Acne often starts in the early teen years because the body is making more oil glands. Some skin problems are a part of acne: White heads: hair follicle is plugged with oil & skin cells. Blackheads: plugged up stuff that comes to the surface of the skin and the air touches it. Keep your face clean-you can do this with just soap and Water. You can always talk with your doctor about it.

Truths or Myths about acne Finding the Truth chocolate and greasy foods cause acne. Although eating too many sugary, high-fat foods is never a good idea, studies show that NO SPECIFIC FOODS have been proven to cause acne. The more you wash your face, the fewer breakouts you ll have. As a general rule, wash your face twice a day with mild soap and gently pat dry when you are done. Popping pimples will help them go away faster. By squeezing pimples and zits, you can actually push bacteria, dead skin cells, and oil further into the skin.

Healthy Hair the same kind of oil that causes breakouts on your face also comes out of the pores on your scape. What to do? If your hair is oily, wash it often Massage your scalp-this removes dead skin cells, excess oil & dirt Always rinse well with clear water If you have dry scalp, use a shampoo that is for dandruff Pay attention to the amount of hair products you use-too much could dry out or make your hair oilier

Smelly Baaaaaad Breath Bad breath, also called halitosis, is caused by bacteria that grows in your mouth. The bacteria gather on the small food pieces left in you mouth, especially between your teeth. Tips for preventing bad breath: Brush your teeth and tongue three times a day, especially after meals Floss every day Replace your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months Visit your Dentist Certain foods can cause bad breathlike garlic & onions, onions A neat trick that can reduce bad breath is to brush your tongue!

Clean hands, please The single most important thing we can do to keep from getting sick and spreading illness to others is to clean our hands! Hands are the easiest transporters of germs and bacteria. Wash your hands with warm water and soap. You may need a brush to get under nails, if they are dirty. Use hand sanitizers when there is no access to a sink. Who s washing their hands and Who s not? In one study, only 58% of female and 48% of male middle and High school students washed their hands after using the bathroom.

Social and Emotional Changes

What does it take to be a socially and emotionally healthy teen? Health Resources Stressmanagement/ coping skills Healthy Relationships Decisionmaking skills Substance Abuse Prevention Sexual Health: Pregnancy and STD Prevention And More!! Body Image Healthy nutrition & exercise Bullying prevention Sexting Effective communication with parents and peers Cyber-bullying prevention Gender Roles Self-esteem

Social/Emotional Changes Show and Tell Small groups: Review your assigned activity 1. Provide overview of the purpose of the activity 2. Explain what happens in the activity 3. What are challenges/strategies you foresee for implementation in the classroom? Report out to large group

Answering Student Questions Do you use an Anonymous Question box? What s your process? Helpful tips on how to answer student questions:

Answering questions Identify the type of question fact? shock? values? Answer the factual part (if you don t know the answer, say so) Use reporter technique: for some. for others for you If it s a value or belief question, refer student to a trusted adult

What new thing did you learn? What would you like more information on? Do you have a suggestion that would be a good addition to this workshop?
