1 The College of Education Scholarship Committee will be reviewing applications for the following scholarships: George Voller Scholarship, Jeanne Thornton Memorial Scholarship, Lillian Evans Egan Scholarship, Ruth Hagan Scholarship **These Scholarships will be awarded for the Spring 2014 semester. Deadline for all scholarships is Thursday, December 12 th ** Eligibility All students must: Scholarships Have a minimum 3.0 GPA, Be declared in a major/co-major within the College of Education, Meet the criteria for one of the following scholarships: George Voller Scholarship This scholarship is available each fall and spring semester to undergraduate students majoring in Special Education. (Includes Early Childhood/Special Education and Elementary/Special Education dual cert. majors). Lillian Evans Egan Scholarship--Established in 1981 by Mrs. Egan, 39, this scholarship is available to Education majors during their undergraduate student teaching. Ruth Hagan Scholarship--This scholarship is for Special Education students who are entering or presently enrolled at NJCU. (Includes Early Childhood/Special Education and Elementary/Special Education dual cert. majors). Jeanne Thornton Memorial Scholarship--This scholarship was established by the Foundations of Education Department in 1990 to honor this former and beloved chairperson. This scholarship is available each fall and spring semester to undergraduate students majoring in Early Childhood, Elementary or Secondary Education who are enrolled in undergraduate student teaching. The award is based on academic excellence, commitment to the teaching profession, and demonstrated professional

2 qualities. Students must have successfully completed the pre-student teaching field experience as well as all other requirements for student teaching. Applicants must submit a copy of the pre-student teaching field supervisor s recommendation. In addition, applicants must also submit letters of recommendations from two additional education faculty. Applicants must show evidence of having demonstrated a commitment to education as a profession in some extracurricular capacity. Application Materials Essay Topics: 1. A fully completed scholarship application form 2. Two letters of recommendation, either two from faculty OR one faculty/one advisor/counselor (Jeanne Thornton Memorial Scholarship requires three letters, one from field experience supervisor and two from other education faculty). 3. A word essay on one of the following topics: A. Carl Rogers once wrote: "The only person who is educated is the one who has learned how to learn and change." How have you learned how to learn and change? How do you hope to pass on these skills to your students? B. Maya Angelou once wrote: "My mother said I must always be intolerant of ignorance but understanding of illiteracy: some people, unable to go to school, were more educated and more intelligent than college professors." Besides illiteracy, what else do you think people, but specifically teachers, need to be understanding of? C. Key officials in the state of New Jersey and the federal government are taking a close look at the current state of teacher preparation programs. If you had an opportunity to speak with these individuals, what suggestion would you share with them about how to best improve teacher preparation for the benefit of preschool through grade 12 learners? Your response must be specific, with a rationale for your idea. ***All applications must be complete and submitted before or by the deadline. No exceptions will be made***
