8 POSSIBLE JOB TITLES/CAREER OPTIONS WITH A FASHION & TEXTILE DEGREE There are a range of career routes with a Fashion and Textiles degree. Typical employers range from high street brands to bespoke/haute couture studios. The main areas include: Design: Fashion designers typically specialise in a particular area for example womenswear, menswear, sportswear, millinery and bridal wear although some designers specialise in more than one area. Typical job titles within design roles include junior designer, design assistant/assistant designer apparel designer. Production: Typical job titles within production roles include garment technologists, pattern cutters and sample machinists. Quality Assurance: Quality assurance roles focus on ensuring that garments/products meet customer specifications. Business: If you have very strong sales, marketing, analytical and numerical skills you may wish to consider roles such as merchandising, buying, allocator, purchasing and supply, fashion marketing and fashion forecasting roles. Previous retail experience would be very useful for these roles. For some of these roles for example purchasing and supply you may need to study additional professional qualifications such as CIPS (Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply) qualifications: Retail: Large department stores may run a retail management graduate scheme in areas such as buying and merchandising. Please check the graduate schemes section for a list of some of these employers. You should also check company websites of retailers for current graduate schemes. Teaching: Typical teaching roles within fashion are within secondary schools, further education colleges and higher education. Teaching qualifications are required for teaching roles and differ dependent on whether you wish to teach at primary, secondary or further education level. To teach in a higher education setting a postgraduate qualification will be required. Apart from teaching roles there are also support roles such as technician/teaching assistant roles. Film, Theatre and Television: Typical roles related to fashion/textiles are within the costume department. Roles include costume/wardrobe assistants, wardrobe supervisors, dressmakers, tailors and cutters. You could also work for a costumier company which supply costumes for the stage and screen.
