WD s GreenPower Family Program Overview Green series World s first 3.5-inch hard drive family with power savings as primary attribute Desktop WD Caviar GP (Sept. 2007) Enterprise WD RE-GP (Nov 2007) Consumer Electronics WD AV-GP External applications WD s first 1 terabyte drive Low Power Competitor drives consume up to 72% more power, for the same performance Cool and quiet best-in-class: Operating temperature Acoustics 23

Storagereview.com 1TB Face Off Subjectively speaking, the GP's noise floor is utterly amazing. It is easily the quietest ever at idle, eerily silent even outside of a case. Seeks are also whisper quiet, significantly lower than all other modern 7200 RPM drives. -- Storagereview 24 24

Power Measurements At 3.8 watts, the Caviar GP delivers the lowest measured power dissipation by far of any drive that has met Testbed4. Under a full load, the power savings remain with the GP weighing in well under 8 watts... a figure lower than that of any other 3.5" drive at idle. --Storagereview 25 25

EPA Report on Data Center Power Consumption Source: EPA report on Data Center Power Consumption, August

EPA Data Center Report in Congress Aug 2, 2007 Datacenters consumed 1.5% of Nation s energy cost in Billion Kilowatt-Hours Federal servers and data centers alone, consumed 10% of 61B KW-Hr; $450M annual operating cost If left unchecked, the agency warns consumption threatens to cost the public and private sector $7.4 billion in annual electricity costs by

Financial Districts in Need of Storage Business districts are all in need of additional storage Existing building and power infrastructure are challenged 29

Power Infrastructure Power grid has finite power available POWER GRID Many existing business districts and building designs, never envisioned the ubiquitous and ever expanding need for storage 30

Matching Storage with Power Micro and macro economics of power infrastructure are becoming challenged POWER GRID Each incremental tier of storage and computing capacity, increases the need for additional utility power to supply systems and maintain environmental control 31

More Scotty Storage, We Need More More Power, Power! More Cooling As system storage is increased, incremental A/C infrastructure must be added, increasing demand on facility power capacity and/or utility availability Presuming enough physical space exists to add incremental A/C, building structures must be modified to support additional weight POWER GRID Available power is consumed 32

Scotty We Need More Power! External power sources are attached to supplement utility power enabling cooling capacity and expanded storage $ $ POWER GRID External power is expensive Rarely clean power Unreliable - prone to failure Complicated to manage Not unlimited 33

Scotty It s Getting Hot in Here! Even if external power is sufficient to power storage systems, insufficient cooling capacity provokes further system reliability issues POWER GRID As more storage is needed, data centers become desperate, and attempt to add incremental cooling capacity.. 34

Scotty We Need EVEN More Power! Building modifications pose substantial infrastructure issues as well as massive cost, and are not supported by viable long term power sources POWER GRID More As more storage.more is needed, power.more data centers become cooling more power, desperate, snowballing and attempt into to a vicious add incremental perpetual cooling cycle capacity.. What s the solution? 35

One Approach - WD GreenPower By replacing existing, highly inefficient high power drives with WD GreenPower drives, far more capacity can be deployed WD s 1TB GreenPower delivers 71% more storage than Brand A s 1TB drive* POWER GRID Enables 93% more storage than Brand B s 750GB drive* *At equivalent power 36

The WD GreenPower Benefit As much as 2.4W of cooling power per Watt of component power is required to maintain proper environmental control POWER GRID A 40% reduction in source power consumption, can eliminate expensive facility upgrades for incremental cooling 37

The WD GreenPower Benefit The complicated logistics of incremental cooling power are eliminated! Capacity is increased Captain - power has been restored! POWER GRID 38

The WD GreenPower Benefit At only ~8W of power consumption for 1TB of storage, and less than 1A of start-up current, WD GreenPower drives have the lowest power to storage ratio in the industry POWER GRID The need for power efficient mass storage will change how the industry addresses the Watts/GB equation! 39

Overall Single System Performance The Caviar GP is within 15% performance of Hitachi drive, and 15% in front of the Seagate Barracuda drive

Green Power Press Reviews WD GP250 named in The Greenest Tech Products, by PCWorld The GP does easily draw the least amount of power of any 3.5" drive we've ever tested... less than 1/2 of any other unit when idle. Even under a full seek, the GP enjoys an advantage of over 30% over the typical 7200 RPM SATA drive. In what almost seems like an ancillary effect, the GP also happens to be the quietest drive we have ever measured and heard here at SR. Its miniscule power dissipation also translates into far less need for cooling which yields yet more acoustic benefit. Especially when taken in the context of arrays featuring many drives that run 24x7, lower cost of operation also becomes significant. At a maximum read throughput of 76.5 MB/s, the WD10EACS is as fast as Seagate's Barracuda drive at up to 750 GB. Considering that the power consumption of the WD drive is so much lower, that's pretty good The second benefit aside from reduced power consumption is low heat dissipation, which is at the level of a single-platter hard drive. Compared to the improvement in power consumption and surface temperature, the performance impact is almost negligible." Tom's Hardware- At $330 and up, hard drives from Hitachi and Western Digital are fighting at the same price point the terabyte. Since the performance difference is little and will mainly be noticeable in I/O-intensive applications, we tend towards the more efficient Western Digital Caviar GP at this point. Tom's Hardware- 47
