Will SSDs Change the World? The merits of solid-state drives (SSDs) extend beyond their benchmark scores. When used as mainstream storage devices, SSDs have the potential to empower new digital lifestyles. Important SSD trends and real-world pros and cons. Flash Flash CES Memory 2011 Storage Solutions

Will SDDs change the world? In our day to day working environment, the PC has become our ever present partner for more than a quarter century. Consumer Electronics and Personal Computer technology advancements have given us abilities and capabilities most could not have imagined a few short years ago. Data storage is at the center of virtually all major technology advancements. Flash memory and SSD technologies present huge opportunities Flash Flash CES Memory 2011 Storage Solutions

Evolution of digital storage Circa 1975 IBM Model 350 5MB Disk File. circa 1956

Evolution of digital storage Capacity! Capacity! Capacity! HDD circa 1998 Bigger, faster, cheaper Al Shugart, CEO Seagate

Will SSD s Change the World? PROS AND CONS

Basic Structure of SSD Connector Major interface is SATA, micro SATA or msata, same as HDD. DRAM Memory to store various management data and for caching. Some SSD use SRAM in controller in place of DRAM. Controller Core of SSD. Provides high h speed read/write, extension of life and high reliability. NAND flash memory Data storage. MLC technology enable to support lower price and larger density. (* Some SSDs use SLC NAND for enhanced endurance) Structure re of SSD Form factor 2.5inch case 1.8inch case 1.8inch case less Half Slim case less msata Other (I/F:SATA) (I/F:Micro SATA) (I/F:Micro SATA) (I/F:SATA) (I/F:mSATA)

Performance SSD Advantages With no mechanical armature to move, SSDs have virtually no latency time and can provide very fast access to the data stored. Reliability. Specifications of SSDs on the market indicate that they provide a high mean time between failure (MTBF) and have a low probability of mechanisms that cause an entire SSD to fail. Intuitively, this thesis would seem to be true; however, this metric has yet to be validated in the market with years of historical experience and field data. Energy efficiency. SSDs offer lower power consumption, resulting in increased usage time when operating on battery power. Environmental. SSDs are not restricted to HDD form factors and can offer various capacities in form factors that can be tailored to unique system device design requirements. In addition, SSDs have a high tolerance for wide temperature and humidity ranges and shock/vibration. They also produce no audible noise.

Cost per GB Capacity HDD Advantages Manufacturing scale and significant maturity have driven the cost per GB to very low. HDDs store multiple TB in a single device Commodity Most HDDs are identical in performance. The primary drivers are rotational speed and areal density. A drive is a drive is a drive.

PRO $/GB Capacity Performance Reliability Low power Small size CON Fragility Higher power consumption Larger size Limited number of write cycles HDD SSD

Will SSD s replace hard drives? No HDD s will always have the $/GB advantage and are highly scalable. The cost of an additional head and platter to double HDD capacity is minimal. SSD cost/gb is much more linear Will SSD s compete with hard drives? Definitely

More storage is better Better storage is more
