6 HUMAN HEALTH BUILDING State of the Science Facility - includes high fidelity simulated learning environments, smart classrooms, teaching labs, research labs, and distance learning facilities. The Critical Care Lab students can gain knowledge related to evidencebased nursing interventions along with the ability to practice implementing safe, professional nursing care The Clinical Simulated Learning Center Human patient simulators, replica of hospital units; latest technology consistent with modern health care facilities. Encourages students to use critical thinking regarding nursing phenomena to become active learners and make discoveries on their own to become creative problem solvers.
7 SCHOOL OF NURSING The first School of Nursing students began in 1975 Our alumni work in a variety of settings; many have become nurse leaders We have more than 1,600 students undergrads and 236 graduate students More than 95% find employment in the tri-county area
8 ACCREDITED PROGRAMS The baccalaureate, master s, and DNP programs at Oakland University are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education
9 SON ACADEMIC PROGRAMS Undergraduate Program (BSN) Basic BSN Accelerated Second Degree BSN Degree Completion sequence for RNs BSN Degree Completion (fast track) Graduate Program (MSN) Adult / Gerontological Nurse Practitioner Family Nurse Practitioner Nurse Anesthesia Forensic Nursing Doctor of Nursing Practice Program (DNP)
10 Admission to the Basic BSN Track It is recommended that students complete one year of college prep high school biology chemistry (with a B or better) before applying to the School of Nursing and the nursing major in addition to multiple years of mathematics Admission to the SON is on a competitive basis. Advisers are available through information sessions and by appointment to guide prospective students through the process
11 DIRECT ADMITS Most common question asked by high school counselors To be eligible for direct admit high school students, by the time they apply to OU need to meet the following: recalculated high school GPA (UG admissions recalculates) - 24 or higher composite ACT and all subscores - 1 year of high school Biology and Chemistry (with a straight B or better in each semester) No additional application for students who want to be direct admit.
12 DIRECT ADMITS If requirements are met and all UG Admission application materials are in by 10/15; the SON will extend offers to students Up to 25 per cohort
13 ONCE ADMITTED TO OU SERVICES INCLUDE Pre-Nursing Adviser, Nick Hooper Direct Admit / BSN Adviser, Sarah Mullin Summer orientation presentation for pre-nursing and direct admits to help them become more familiar and comfortable with the HHB and SON expectations Fall orientation (Part II) to orient them to the nursing profession and the HHB Most freshmen work with first year advising center --except the direct admits for nursing who meet with Sarah to help with scheduling; she meets with them at least once a semester individually and in groups to address any concerns

16 Pre-Nursing Living and Learning Community Students live in Vandenberg Hall with other pre-nursing students Allows students to develop a community of peers who are interested in nursing as their undergraduate major To Qualify Must designate pre-nursing as your major Have a high school GPA of 3.2 or higher Have an ACT score of 20 or higher (or SAT equivalent)
17 Pre-Nursing Living and Learning Community Students receive advising and development programming specific to their community in conjunction with the Housing Resident Assistants and Academic Peer Mentors
18 SON HIGHLIGHTS Students clinical experiences are held in major health care systems across Southeastern Michigan The undergraduate curriculum is dynamic and responsive to changes in clinical nursing practice The undergraduate curriculum is informed by current nursing research and advocates evidencebased nursing practice at all levels of the curriculum
19 SON HIGHLIGHTS OU SON undergraduate program is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. NCLEX pass rates for first time test takers is above the SON benchmark. The undergraduate curriculum is structured to facilitate student use of nursing theory and critical thinking in the clinical setting.

21 SIMULATION SCENARIOS High-fidelity simulation experiences are incorporated throughout the curriculum Helps ensure students gain experience in a large variety of scenarios in order to feel more comfortable when going into the hospital setting

23 QUALITY FACULTY All SON full-time faculty have a minimum of a graduate degree in nursing, and all of the SON s professors possess a doctoral degree SON faculty members have clinical expertise in the areas that they teach SON professors incorporate their research knowledge and findings into the courses that they teach
