2 WHAT IS THE DE LA SALLE FOOD INSTITUTE?

3 The De La Salle Food Institute is a consortiumbetween the Institut Polytechnique LaSalle Beauvais and Lasallian Institutions belonging to De La Salle Philippines and is for the purpose of education, research, innovation and transfer of technology in the different areas of study along the food supply chain; DE LA SALLE FOOD INSTITUTE

4 The De La Salle Food Instituteis guided by the Lasallian mission of generating and propagating new knowledge for human development and social transformation; The De La Salle Food Institutewill serve the food supply chain requirements of the Philippines in particular and Southeast Asia in general; and The De La Salle Food Instituteshall take advantage of the Philippines being one of the platforms of education in the region and shall use the French image in Food and Gastronomy.

5 WHAT ARE THE IDEALS OF THE DE LA SALLE FOOD INSTITUTE?

6 It is the ideal of the De La Salle Food Institute to: 1. stimulate the economy: -through the creation of new activities in the food supply chain; and -by transformation of locally produced commodities before exports for added value instead of exporting raw materials. 2. protect the environment by: -the development of environment friendly processes and technology.

7 It is the ideal of the De La Salle Food Institute to: 3. sustain rural development: -through the creation of new jobs to make rural exodus unnecessary; and -by providing farmers the means to receive an equitable share of added value. 4. advance food security by: -reducing product spoilage through a more efficient food supply chain process and by fitting agricultural output with food demand; -improving the efficiency of post harvest processing; and -improving the logistical structures from farm to market.

8 It is the ideal of the De La Salle Food Institute to: 5. improve food safety: -by promoting environment friendly processes and sanitary handling of food and food products from farm to market. 6. promote a strong citizenry through a healthy diet: -by education, research and outreach activity especially for infants, nursing mothers, the materially challenged members of society and all Filipinos in general.

9 WHAT ARE THE METHODS TO BE USED TO ACHIEVE THESE IDEALS?

10 The methods for achieving these ideals are by: 1. offering degree programs in the development and management of the food supply chain processes; 2. conducting research and development on various areas concerning food, health, nutrition and food product manufacturing; 3. providing various food-related research and testing services for agricultural cooperatives and industry partners; and 4. conducting training and offer diploma programs in the management of specific processes along the food supply chain, for certain sectors of society (e.g. farmer groups, hog raisers and food technology workers).

13 WHY DO THE WE NEED THE DE LA SALLE FOOD INSTITUTE?

14 We need the De La Salle Food Institute because it: 1. can contribute to nation building by helping stimulate the economy, protect the environment, sustain rural development, advance food security, improve food safety and promote a healthy diet for a strong citizenry; 2. allows us to achieve the Lasallian mission of generating and propagating new knowledge for human development and social transformation; 3. unites De La Salle institutions here and abroad under one theme;

15 We need the De La Salle Food Institute because it: 4. supports the internationalization of our academic and research agenda through joint and exchange programs with our international partners; 5. is congruent with the move of transforming DLSU to a research university; and 6. is supportive of the business incubation program.
