MSC RVS UNIBE On-site Video-conferencing System (OViS) Stefan Ott Institute of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics Universität Bern

What's the problem? Complicated (electrical) installations on construction sites No communication infrastructure installed Changes require assembler to confer with engineer Costly on-site visits of engineers 2

The solution A wireless mesh network (WMN), of course! 3

Requirements Today, construction sites usually have DSL on-site Must be easy to deploy by normal people End-to-end video conferencing with qualifi ed person Handheld computer on-site Reasonable distribution of available mesh nodes 4

Deployment process Grab UMPC, turn it on System in bag Grab node and ethernet cable Connect ethernet cable to DSL, turn on the node Yes Network complete? No UMPC sees node, accepts it as gateway UMPC tells user to grab next node All done Start VC Deploy Move node until UMPC is happy Turn it on 5

Finding the right location Use signal strength to previous node Trade-off between link quality and covered area Find optimal distance through experiments 6

First design idea for network setup Pros Simple Cons Uses IPv4 Needs custom DHCP server 7

Design idea for network setup: IPv6 Pros IPv6 autoconfi guration Cons No multichannel Needs SSH HTTP requests No possible to run RADVD on autoconfi gured nodes Receiving ICMP is diffi cult 8

Design idea for network setup: hello Pros No HTTP Cons No multichannel Needs SSH 9

Design idea for network setup: simpler Pros No HTTP No SSH Cons No multichannel Pings forever 10

Okay okay, let's think this through We really want multichannel support 11

Design idea for network setup: OLSR Pros Multichannel! No custom ping Cons Needs SSH HTTP request More complex Depends on OLSR Additional delay 12

Some more thinking IEEE s instead of OLSR Works on layer 2, no more IP tunnels Soon-to-be standardized, should work anywhere Currently only supported by Linux and FreeBSD We can't use OLSR for node discovery Confi gure network interfaces without SSH Cfengine on handheld? Too much specialization Custom daemon on node? Complex if security is relevant (encryption, authentication) CGI-script + cfengine on node Ultra-thin clients (smartphones) 13

Network topology OLSR IEEE s 14

Current design idea for network setup Pros Multichannel! No SSH Routing protocol agnostic Cons Needs pinger Needs HTTP Additional delay 15

Partly-solved issues Rewrite HELLO service Non-routed IPv6 interfaces (/128) No broadcast addressing in IPv6 Use link-local all hosts multicast group (ff02::1) Video conferencing Currently using skype Reliability Integration So far, no other working solution found Wait for ADAM to be ported to newer kernel version Robustness of hardware suitable for construction sites? 16

Unsolved issues Battery power How to detect an empty battery How to react Ideally, topology would be a mesh, not a single line Diffi cult to guide unexperienced users Even more diffi cult with multi channel network Probably not going to happen 17

Progress First steps Set up node image Write discovery daemon Write cross-platform UI (wxpython) Write better cross-platform UI (Tkinter) Deployment support Speak OLSR Get link-quality metrics from nodes Test options for guiding user Video conferencing Write/fi nd VC application Integrate application into system First prototype 18

The Future Evaluation of fi rst prototype Test at the institute Experimental evaluation of signal strength thresholds Evaluation of different channel assignment strategies Second prototype (improvements) Evaluation of second prototype Test at the institute Test on construction site Demonstration to electric installation company Third prototype Multi-channel network Improved deployment support based on evaluation and feedback 19

The Distant Future Evaluation of third prototype Test on construction site Compare performance of OLSR vs. IEEE s (?) Thesis 20
