2 7. Description Inventory No. PG: Condition excellent deteriorated good X ruins fair altered Prepare both a one paragraph summary and a comprehensive description of the resource and its various elements as it exists today. The is located on the grounds of the Washington Bible College in unincorporated Lanham, Maryland. This sprawling campus is located at the intersection of Princess Garden Parkway and Good Luck Road. The campus has slight variations in terrain, and is marked by large open spaces, wooded areas, and parking lots. The site of the springs is believed to be located amongst a dense grouping of trees adjacent to a creek bed at the northern end of campus. This creek bed, approximately twenty-feet wide, runs through campus. Concrete culverts allow the creek to flow uninterrupted under the asphalt roadways. SITE No resources associated with Magnolia Springs are extant. The site is obscured by mature trees and dense vegetation. The springs that once provided mineral water for bottling are no longer discernable. At the time of the 1973 on-site survey, this resource was described as only having one extant springhouse. The site was an overgrown, swampy area that showed extensive traces of former brick walkways and pipes. The springhouse was a small, wood-frame building, with a gable roof that at the time of the survey in 1973 was mostly removed. 1 As of 2008, the springhouse was no longer extant. Aerial photography documents the springhouse was not extant in INTEGRITY The does not maintain sufficient integrity to convey its significance as an example of the economic heritage of Prince George s County, and therefore is not recommended as eligible for listing. As there are no extant buildings, structures, or objects, this resource has lost its integrity of materials, design, workmanship, feeling, location, setting, and association. The site is now associated with the Washington Bible College. No above-ground evidence of this commercial enterprise is extant. However, the site may possess archaeological potential. Overall, the has lost its integrity and is indistinguishable from its modern surroundings. 1 Michael F. Dwyer, Magnolia Springs, Maryland Historical Trust Inventory Form for State Historic Sites Survey, (1974), 7:1.

(For compliance projects, complete evaluation on a DOE Form see manual.) STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The Magnolia Spring Site was part of the established small port community of Hill s Landing, as noted on the 1861 Martenet Map of Prince George s County. 2 The spring, although no longer extant, represents the economic viability of Prince George s County at the turn of the twentieth century. Although not part of a widespread industry, the operators of the Magnolia Spa Water Company sent shipments of bottled water throughout the United States. The proliferation of spring-fed, bottled water companies during the turn of the twentieth century reflects the public s desire to pay for healthier products and services. Residents of Washington, D.C. s many residential suburbs were willing to pay for clean drinking water, a sign of economic prosperity. The spring is no longer functional and the above-ground resources are no longer extant; yet the site may possess archaeological potential. This site does not retain sufficient integrity above-ground to convey its significance as a twentieth-century, spring-fed, water bottling facility important to Prince George s County s economic history. Therefore, it is not recommended as eligible for listing as a Prince George s County Historic Site. HISTORIC CONTEXT The Magnolia Spring Site is located in the unincorporated community of Lanham, Maryland. Located in western Prince George s County, Lanham became established as a result of the construction of the Washington Branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad in This branch provided service from Washington, D.C. to Huntington City, later known as Bowie, Maryland. Eventually the branch became the main line into the City of Washington, and as such, Lanham was established as a railroad community. 3 Magnolia Springs proximity to Lanham Station gave it a competitive advantage in distribution by railroad. Amtrak passenger trains now utilize the Washington Branch. As Washington, D.C. grew from its federal city beginnings, it began to spill over into 2 Simon J. Martenet, Atlas of Prince George s County, Maryland, 1861, Adapted from Martenet s Map of Prince George s County, Maryland (Baltimore: Simon J. Martenet C.E., 1861). 3 Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission Planning Department, Historic Contexts in Prince George s County (1991), 43.
4 Maryland Historical Trust Maryland Inventory of Inventory No. PG: Number 8 Page 2 the adjoining counties. The train station at Lanham provided impetus for the growth of suburban Washington, D.C. communities and small neighborhoods established during the first-half of the twentieth century. The is located in the Princess Gardens Subdivision. This new subdivision was owned by Enoch Baker Evans and platted in 1903 by Edward L. Latimer. Evans was documented as a farmer at the time of the 1910 U.S. Federal Census. 4 It is not known if Evans operated the Magnolia Spa Water Company or if the property was leased. This site was a complex of mineral springs where water was bottled and sold commercially throughout the United States. 5 This spring was one of several that rose at the base of a low hill on the top of which was a dwelling. This dwelling is no longer extant and it is not known what it looked like. The spring was enclosed in a terra cotta pipe surrounded by masonry. The water would flow from the spring through a galvanized-iron pipe. 6 The bottles were cleaned by hand in the spring water to which an alkali is said to be added to aid in the cleansing process. The bottles were filled though a funnel by simply allowing the water to flow in from the mount of the pipe. The water was strained through a cloth to remove foreign particles. Corks stopped the bottles. 7 The Magnolia Spa Water Company distributed their bottled water through drug stores and charged 50 cents for six bottles. 8 The company touted their spring water as possessing purity, strength, and health. Advertisements for this company only ran in the Washington Post in Other local spring water companies also advertised their products, touting the same health benefits promised by the Magnolia Spa Water Company. The bottled water industry grew immensely around the turn of the twentieth century. This period saw the introduction of Deer Park in 1873, Great Bear in 1888, Arrowhead in 1894, Ozarka in 1905, and Calistoga in People started to understand, and appreciate, the outdoors and the health benefits that could be realized by living a healthier life. This sediment was aided by the claims of so-called experts and their declaration that spring water held special healing properties. It is not known when this commercial enterprise moved from the site or stopped operations. The Magnolia Spa Water Company is not related to the Magnolia Springs Water Company operating in Kentwood, Louisiana; thus it is believed the company ceased to operate rather than relocate. Based on aerial photography, it appears that the dwelling referred to in the 1906 report by Kastle and Amoss was extant in 1938 and In the 1938 aerial U.S. Federal Census, Bladensburg, Prince George's, Maryland, Series T624, Roll 567, Page 21B, Enumeration District 61, Image 107, Enoch Baker Evans. 5 Michael F. Washington Bible College is composed of multiple contiguous parcels, located at 6511 Princess Garden Parkway. The northern and eastern boundaries of the property follow Good Luck Road. The western boundary follows Princess Garden Parkway. The southern boundary of this property abuts a mid-twentieth-century residential neighborhood, buffered by mature trees. The exact location of the spring was not discernible at the time of the survey in 2008, as the above-ground resources are no longer extant. 11.
