7 PRAISE PROJECT Dr Matthew Yee-King Lecturer, Department of Computing Goldsmiths, University of London PRAISE is a three million European project undertaken in partnership with Sony Research Labs in Paris, the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute in Barcelona, and VUB University in Brussels and led at Goldsmiths by Professor Mark d Inverno. Dr Marco Gillies Director of Studies, Department of Computing Goldsmiths, University of London The field of computing is changing so rapidly that the potential for doing new and innovative things is immense. goldsmiths has an ethos of interdisciplinarity, innovation and challenging the status quo, which makes us well positioned for nurturing future leaders in computing through our degree courses. It s a thrilling time to be involved in the subject! Mr Michael frantzis Deputy Course Director, International Programmes Department of Computing goldsmiths, University of London At its heart is an online tool which aims to make learning music more social and provide new opportunities for students to access music. The tool, known as PRAISE (Practice and Performance Analysis Inspiring Social Education), provides a platform that brings together advances in social networks, intelligent agents, online communities and cutting- edge linguistic, audio and gesture analysis. The aim is to create an online environment that enriches audio- visual feedback to provide richer and more personalised experiences, than are possible with other online learning systems. Dr Matthew Yee- King, the project manager responsible for the delivery of the software across the different European cities, explains: PRAISE allows students to record and upload practice sessions and for teachers and other learners to annotate specific sections of the performance, responding with text, or other audio, to emphasise aspects of style or performance. By making music practice a less isolated activity, and exploring the opportunities of peer-to- peer learning and social endorsement, the platform aims to make learning music a social experience, providing a trusted and interactive environment in which to share music learning and feedback. However, the project has the potential to make an impact in other areas outside of music. Principal Investigator on the project Professor d Inverno explains: We are keen to set up as many communities of music learning and music co- creation as possible during the lifetime of the project to ensure we are building a system that people actually want to use. What s exciting is that even though our initial platform has been designed for music specifically there s the potential for it to be extended across other media, and so to support other types of social creative processes for its production. 5

8 programme information With over 9,200 University of London students studying at SIM, the institute has one of the world s largest concentration of registered students pursuing accounting, banking, economics, management, computing and information systems. SIM is well-equipped and positioned to help our students reach high standards and produce top graduates from the University of London. In 2014, twelve graduates from a cohort of 80 Computing and Information Systems and Creative Computing graduates attained First Class Honours degrees - a feat achieved only by a small percentage of students around the world each year. Nine SIM students also obtained the top score in eleven 2014 examinations. Programme Objectives The Department of Computing at Goldsmiths has interdisciplinarity at the heart of its identity. Goldsmiths runs undergraduate and postgraduate computing degree programmes that include the application of computer science and programming to the arts, media, music, design, games, psychology and business. Programme Structure The minimum duration of each Bachelor of Science (Honours) (or BSc (Hons)) degree programme is three years, full-time. The programme is constructed on a modular basis and the content is divided into full and half course units. Students are required to complete a total of 12 full units. Students are required to attend classes for all units in the programme with SIM. Independent study of any units is not allowed. In the first year of studies, SIM students must register for 4 units, and those who are granted Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) for two units at Level 1 may take additional Level 2 units, provided there is no clash in the time-table. International students should note that no transfer between degrees is permitted once ICA has approved the student s pass. Attendance Requirement Attendance is monitored and students are encouraged to fulfil a minimum attendance of 75%. The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority of Singapore (ICA) requires all international students issued with a valid Student s Pass to achieve attendance of 90% and above in any month of the course. Assessment and Examination A student must attempt and pass the assessment for a total of 12 full units to complete the programme. There are 4 compulsory units at Levels 1 and 2 and at Level 3, there are six half units and a final year project (valued as one full unit). Except for unit CO1102 Mathematics for computing, whose assessment is 100% examination-based, all other units have both coursework and examination components. Most full and half units would require students to complete two assignments. Both coursework and an examination are compulsory, and a student must attempt both the components in order to be graded. Minimum Class Size For a class to commence, there must be a minimum number of 25 students. In the event that the class cannot commence due to low take-up rate, students will be informed at least one month prior to class commencement. Promotion and Graduation The examinations are held only once a year in May. To commence on the Level 3 (final year) units, candidates must have passed at least 6 full units at Level 1 and 2 combined. To commence work on the Level 3 final year project, a minimum of three Level 2 units must have been passed. Candidates who do not perform well may fail the coursework and/or the examination component. It is possible to repeat only the component you have failed. A candidate can resit a paper while pursuing other new units. Units which have been passed may not be retaken. Students are allowed to progress through each academic year, repeat failed unit/s immediately the following year till they meet the requirement to be classified/graduate. The degree classification scheme places greater weightage on Level 3 units. To be admitted to an honours degree, the student must have attempted and passed all 12 units including the project. The degree is awarded with First Class Honours, Second Class Honours (divided into Upper and Lower Division) and Third Class Honours. A student who does not qualify for honours may be awarded a Diploma of Higher Education as an exit award. Mode of Study At SIM, you will be engaged in a variety of teaching environments. Classes are delivered in a carefully designed array of lectures and workshops, enabling you to experience a diversity of styles for optimal learning. All students are expected to bring their own notebooks to access materials during class as all course materials will be available online. Full-time classes are held five days a week between Monday and Saturday. Lectures start at 8.30am, 12pm, 3.30pm and sometimes at 7pm. Tutorials and Lab Sessions for Level 1 and 2 units are held before or after the lecture. There are occasional classes on Sundays and public holidays. Programme Calendar September Class Commencement January Examination Entry Exercise March SIM Preliminary Exam March/April Revision Workshops May Examinations August Release of exam results September Classes resume Progression Students may transfer into the internal programme at Goldsmiths in London at the end of any academic year. In 2013 and 2014, two of our students transferred to the on-campus programme to complete their degree. Graduates may also continue to pursue postgraduate qualifications as BSc (Hons) in Computing and Information Systems graduates have done at NTU in Singapore or overseas in UK. In 2012, three went to the London School of Economics and Political Science, Bath and Dundee for Master s degrees in Information Systems, Management and in Computing respectively. 6

9 Candidature Period The maximum allowed period for a student to complete the course as stipulated by the University of London is as follows. Programme Maximum candidature Minimum candidature Standard Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree 8 years 3 years Standard Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree (with APL 4 units) 8 years 2 years Diploma in Economics + Standard Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree 8 years 4 years International Foundation Programme + Standard Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree 8 years 4 years There will not be any refund or recourse should the student fail to complete within the maximum allowed period. At SIM, students who are academically weak and find it difficult to progress or complete the programme within the minimum duration will be counselled. SIM reserves the right to recommend and withdraw a student who cannot cope with the demands of the programme, especially when the student s pass of the international student has expired. Effective Teaching and Guidance At SIM, Level 1 and 2 students attend 3-hour lectures and 1.5-hour tutorials. Level 3 students have 3-hour lecturecum-tutorial sessions. SIM provides intensive revision workshops by UK academics for the bulk of the units offered. Students have praised these workshops for their effectiveness in helping them prepare for their examinations. Students also sit for preliminary exams set and marked by UK academics. At Level 3, the student s learning experience culminates with the final year project. Students tap on the expertise of supervisors who help greatly in the drafting of their reports. Independent reviewers add on a third dimension to critique and advise students. The effectiveness of our teaching methods is reflected in the fact that SIM has consistently produced top graduates in the University of London International Programmes. Each year, our best Computing graduates have achieved First Class Honours degrees. This is an achievement given the number of First Class Honours degrees awarded overall each year. The awarding of Affiliate Centre status to SIM by the University of London is a reflection of our sustained commitment to high standards in respect of the teaching, support and administration of students of the University of London International Programmes. Degree Accreditation The University of London was the third English educational institution to be conferred a recognised university status by the Royal Charter back in Since then, it has consistently passed the regular inspection by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education with flying colours. 15 Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) Candidates with diploma qualifications may apply to the University of London for Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL), better known as APLs or credit transfer. APL may be awarded for up to four units Levels1 and 2. The qualification on which your application is based must have been obtained within the five years preceding the application. You cannot be considered for APL from a particular unit if you have already entered the examination for that unit. APL may be awarded if you have previously studied a similar subject in the same depth, at degree level, and you achieved good marks in the corresponding examination. The granting of APL is at the discretion of the University. The University reserves the right to review its APL policy in respect of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computing and Information Systems or Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Creative Computing each year. Discretionary Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) A fee of 85 (per full unit) is charged by the University of London for processing discretionary APL. Fees are subjected to change yearly. In order for an application to be considered a student must normally have successfully completed the whole of the qualification on the basis of which he or she is claiming APL and have already received the final award for that qualification. An application from a student who has not yet received his or her award will be considered under the rules governing APL at the time that the award is finally made and not at the time that the application for APL was submitted. If discretionary APL is granted, inform SIM immediately so that a pro-rated refund of unattended classes for that unit may be given to you. Automatic Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)* APL for the courses specified in the table below is awarded automatically based on the polytechnic qualification stated. The APL application fee is not required for APL awarded in this category. The APL is subject to review and changes each year.
