Overview of Illinois Participation in the NGA Policy Academy
Army Skill identifier: M6 attachment (300 M6 Practical Nurse, Phase 1 and Phase 2) Navy Hospital Corpsman Air force Aerospace Medical Service Technicians
Rationale & Employment Demand: (According to the Illinois Dept. of Employment Security) Estimated demand increase of 9.05% for LPNs and Vocational Nurses in Illinois between 2010 and That percentage represents an estimated 2,115 additional jobs, resulting in an expected total of 25,482 positions. This is thus a field with ample room for meaningful careers for transitioning service members. However, to date there is no mechanism in place to transition Air Force Aerospace Medical Service Technicians and Navy Hospital Corpsmen into LPN careers in a way that accounts for their robust military medical training.
Main Problem: Lack of focused attention and resources Even with BON s action, no community college has yet stood up the corresponding LPN Veteran Bridge Program.
Course designed for individuals who have completed the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) Basic Medical Technician Corpsman Program and seek to earn a practical nurse certificate
1. Students will be prepared to successfully complete the PN-NCLEX. 2. Students will competently perform at an entry level within the scope of practice of the licensed practical nurse as defined in the Illinois Nurse Practice Act.
Credits: 6 2 credits for class at 15 hours/credit plus 2 hours generally designated for final exam 4 credits for clinical and lab at 45 hours/credit = 180 hours 8 week course Didactic hours: 32 (Recommend 4 hours/week for 8 weeks) Clinical hours: 170 (24 days of 7 hours/day) in a long term care setting with flexibility for some full-shift experiences Skills validation hours: 10
Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation Division of Professional Regulation further espouses that students who complete this course will meet the graduate competencies of the practical/vocational nurse as delineated by the National League for Nursing. In the areas of: Human Flourishing - Promote the human dignity, integrity, self-determination, and personal growth of patients, oneself, and members of the health care team Nursing Judgment - Provide a rationale for judgments used in the provision of safe, quality care and for decisions that promote the health of patients within a family context Professional Identity - Assess how one s personal strengths and values affect one s identity as a nurse and one s contributions as a member of the health care team Spirit of Inquiry - Question the basis for nursing actions, considering research, evidence, tradition, and patient preferences.
10/30/12 Conference Call meeting with Veteran Affairs Director: Military to LPN: Discussed nursing education system. Action Plan: The education committee of the BON will review the military curriculum and compare it to the Department s LPN curriculum check sheet for new LPN programs. Packet compiled and given to the Education Committee members at the BON meeting on 11/9/12.The entire BON will review the packet for the 1/11/13 BON meeting. 12/6/12 Verbal report from education committee: Navy and Air force curriculum missing few concepts of the LPN curriculum.
12/20/12 Education Committee submitted written review and it was sent to the BON. 1/11/13 BON meeting: The education committee of the BON reviewed the military curriculum and compared it to the Department s LPN curriculum check sheet for new LPN programs. The entire BON reviewed the packet also. BON approved the education committees recommendations for the Military LPN bridge program. 1/16/13 Conference call meeting with the Veteran Affairs Director: Discussed the nursing template that will be used for other professions such as dental hygienist and pt. aide.
