3 Deliverables Licensed Practical Nurse 1. Reference National Council of State Boards of Nursing s NCSBN Analysis: A Comparison of Selected Military Health Care Occupation Curricula with a Standard Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse Curriculum: il2013.pdf 2. Determine content to develop bridge courses in coordination with education programs and develop strategies to make bridge courses available.

4 Deliverables Licensed Practical Nurse 3. Consult with ACE to help educational programs and individual veterans translate military and bridge education into college credit. 4. Amend Board of Nursing regulations, if needed, to recognize equivalent credentials. 5. Train DHP licensure staff on Joint Services Transcripts/other military and bridge credentials 6. Modify application/licensure database to accommodate veteran-related variables 7. Track progress on veteran licensure and make data research-ready for additional analyses as needed.

5 Deliverables Physical Therapist Assistants 1. Complete a formal gap analysis with help of Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT), Commission on Accreditation of the American Physical Therapist Association (CAAPTA) and American Council on Education (ACE). 2. Determine specific coursework needed to bridge the gap and coordinate with Virginia Community College System to make bridge courses available. 3. Consult with ACE to aid individuals translate military and bridge education to college credit. 4. Amend Board of Physical Therapy Regulations, if needed and train DHP licensure staff to recognize equivalency credentials. 5. Track progress on veteran licensure.

6 Deliverables EMT/Paramedics 1. National Registry Certification reciprocity already exists for EMTs/Paramedics as does reduced in-state training time. 2. As with LPN and PTA at DHP, the VDH application data tracking system will be modified to include questions about: a. Veteran Status (Yes/No) b. Gender c. Branch of Service d. Rank e. MOC and subspecialty f. Level of education and other variables as may be deemed appropriate as part of the review

7 Deliverables Data on Veteran Licensure & Employment 1. As is the case for the Virginia Department of Health Professions and Department of Health in tracking licensure and certification, the Employment Commission will need to modify its existing databases to accommodate the additional veteran variables. 2. Tracking of PTA, LPN, and EMT/Paramedic employment and unemployment accordingly.

9 Needs NGA s consultative support and help in reaching out to national organizations for their expert assistance. NGA s mechanism to share Information across participants, especially relating to bridge course development and implementation through educational programs/colleges Enhanced coordination among Virginia s affected agencies, education programs and institutions

10 Meeting Objectives 1. Meet and network with the NGA staffers, consultants, and representatives from the other states. 2. Meet with the FSBPT representatives to explore details of the gap analysis work needed for PTAs. 3. Refine the draft workplan in consultation with experts and other states.

11 Next Steps Coordinate meetings of expanded Interagency Workgroup with representatives from : Va. Dept. of Health Professions Va. Dept. of Veterans Services Va. Dept. of Health Va. National Guard Va. Employment Commission Va. Community College System and various private sector partners

12 Next Steps Interagency Working Group will be further subdivided into Subgroups for more focused effort on each of four areas: 1. Data collection/analysis strategies 2. Practitioner certification/licensing (EMT/P, LPN, PTA) 3. Practitioner education 4. DHP and VDH implementation (legislation/regulation and internal staff training system changes)
