2 /1 1 Programrne requirements : In order to successftilly complete the programme, 120 ECTS credits must be passed. All students must pass required exams. Students are also required to write a thesis, which must be passed in order to be awarded the master's degree. Learning outcomes are: A candidate who has successfully completed the programme will have a learning outcome in the form of aquired knowledge, skills, and general competence, as described in the subsections below. Knowledge The candidate: * has advanced knowledge in thermodynanrics; heat and mass transfer; and mathematical modelling and simulation of pr ocesses; * has a highly specialized knowledge of theory and methods used in the area of energy and environment, with emphasis on combustion processes? process safefy, energy optimization, gas purification, water treahnent, environmental biotechnology, energy technology, and control of processes; * knows how to use advanced and specialized knowledge in new areas, for example via crossdisciplinary projects; * knows how to perform techno-economical analyses. Skills The candidate: * is able to apply adequate methods and techniques in solving problems within the field * is able to work as an individual, as."lell as in teams, in planning and conduction of experiments and technical projects; * is able to work safely in laboratories, in accordance with HES procedures; * knows how to use computer based tools to solve technical problems; * is able lo analyze and critically review different sources of information, and is able to use such information in structuring and formulating technical problem descriptions and goals; * is able to apply universally accepted methods ofcitation and referencing ofscientific sources; * is able to independently conduct a defined research or development project under supervision, according to prevailing ethical nonns. * is able to analyze and propose solutions to different types of environmental problems and energy-related challenges based on ftindamental, advanced and specialized knowledge. General competence The candidate: * is able to analyse relevant challenges in an ethical context; * is able to apply acquired knowledge and skills to solve advanced tasks and projects in new areas; * masters the terminology used and is able to communicate acquired knowledge in the area of energy and environment - orally; in technical report writing; and via use of modem visualization tools; * is able to discuss - with experts as well as with the general public - technical problems, analyses and conclusions within the area of energy and environment; * is able to take part in and contribute to creative thinking and innovation Programme details: See enclosed ECTS-transcript. 4 8 Information on the national higher education system Higher education in Norway All public and private higher education in Norway is subject to Act No. 15 of I April 2005 relating to Universities and University Colleges. Higher education institlrtions cornprise of universities, specialized university instifutions, university colleges, and various private higher education institutions with recognised study programmes, Approximately 90% of the students in Norway attend state institutions. Norway introduced bachelor's, master's and PhD degrees in2a02. Regulations covering these degrees, professional qualifications/titles awarded by the institutions and prescribed length ofstudy, are codified in Royal Decree nttmber 1574 of l6 December 2005 ( I 574.html). Accreditation and evaluation All institutions of higher education are subject to the authority of the Ministry of Education and Research. The Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT), an independent national agency for the accreditation and evaluation of higher education, is responsible for assessing the quality of study progranxnes and institutions. The agency has accreditation powers for all higher education in Norway. Admission requirements for higher education Minimum requirement for admission to higher education is the successful cornpletion ofnorwegian upper secondary education ( I 3 years of schooling, extended from l 2 years from I 997). Upon graduation pupils are presented with the Upper Secondary School Leaving Certificate. Alternatively, admission may be gained by means of other qualifications recognised as being equivalent to the general matriculation standard. Some fields of study have additional entrance requirernents. Degrees and qualifications The "Høgskolekandidat" degree is obtained after two years of study (120 "studiepoeng"/ects). Holders of this degree may continue their studies and obtain a bachelor's degree. This degree is offered at state university colleges and a few other institutions. The Bachelor's degree is awarded by all state universities, specialized university institutions, university colleges and a good number of other higher education institutions, both private and public. The nominal length of studies required to obtain this degree is three years of study ( I 80 "studiepoeng'7ects). The Master's degree is awarded by state universities, specialized university institutions, several university colleges and some private institutions. The degree is normally obtained after two years of study (120 "studiepoeng"/ects), following the cornpletion of a bachelor's degree. An important part of this degree is the independent work/thesis, earning between 30 and 60 "studiepoeng"/ects credits. In the fields of medicine, psychology, veterinary science and theology professionally oriented degrees/ qualifications are awarded after cornpleting six years of studies. The Doctoral degree Philosophiae Doctor PhD is awarded after three years of study, following the completion of a master's degree or a six-year professionally oriented degree/qualification. Doctoral programmes are offered by all universities and specialized university institutions, by some state university colleges and also by a few private institutions. There are a few exceptions to this degree structllre, listed in the diagram below. Credit system and grading The academic year normally runs from mid-august to mid-june and lasts for l0 months. Courses are rneasured in "studiepoeng", considered equivalent to the European Credit Transfer System standard (ECTS credits). The full-time workload for one academic year is hours ofstudy / 60 "studiepoeng". Grades for undergraduate and postgraduate examinations are awarded according to a graded scale frorn A (highest) to F (lowest), with E as the minin.rum pass grade. A pass/fail mark is given for some examinations. A Excellent - An excellent performance, clearly outstanding. The candidate delnonstrates excellentjudgement and a very high degree of independent thinking. B Very good - A very good performance. The candidate deinonstrates soundjudgement and a high degree of independent rhinking. C Good - A good performance in most areas. The candidate demonstrates a reasonable degree ofjudgement and independent thinking in the most ilnportant areas. D Satisåctory - A satisfactory performance, but with significant shortcomings. The candidate demonstrates a limited degree ofjudgernent and independent thinking. E Sufficient - A perfonnance that meets the minirnum criteria, but no lnore. The candidate dernonstrates a very limited degree ofjudgement and independent thinking. F Fail - A perfonnance that does not meet the minimum academic criteria. The candidate dernonstrates an absence of both judgenrent and independent thinking.
