In this module students will use various tools to create a variety of visualisations from different types of data. Students will also be introduced to theoretical issues around data visualisation. MODULE LEARIG OUTCOMES By engaging successfully with this module a student will be able to: critically assess the value of data visualisation. use a variety of types and structures of data sources to construct useful advanced visualisations. build visualisations by using appropriate programming languages together with available software tools and libraries. IDICATIVE COTET Introduction to the area of data visualisation including an assessment of the benefits together with an awareness of the potential for visualisations to lead to accidental or deliberate deception. Review of the appropriateness of graphs: graphs that distort or hide the facts Introduction to web applications and relevant technology. Interactive HTML5 web applications with JavaScript programming. Other languages such as Java may also be employed. SVG graphics (for example using the d3.js library) and HTML5 canvas. Examination and use of various charting and dynamic visualisation libraries Use of maps in visualising data with tools such as Google Maps JavaScript API v3, R or SAS Visual Analytics. Critical evaluation of cognitive issues in successful visualisations. Use of statistical visualisation and graphics tools e.g SAS visual analytics, Tableau, R etc.

2 LEARIG, TEACHIG AD ASSESSMET - STRATEG AD METHODS Students will be supported in their learning, to achieve the above outcomes, in the following ways A variety of teaching and learning methods will be employed. The main topics will be presented in lectures and students will be given an opportunity to develop and test many of these in the practical lab based sessions. An important element of the learning experience in this module will come from the student involvement in various tasks in which we ask students to produce visualisations as solutions to a particular business need. Students are encouraged to reflect upon the activities carried out, and upon the learning material provided. The taught sessions will be supplemented by additional study material and directed selfstudy to reinforce the concepts and ideas presented in the lectures and lab sessions. Ongoing formative feedback will be given whilst students work on their applications in the lab sessions. Short progress checks will take place at appropriate periods during development of the application. Feedback on lab based sessions will be made available on Blackboard in the form of solutions and examples. This will provide students with bench marks on which to further develop. Following the demonstration of their own application students will be given verbal feedback and will be provided with a provisional mark for their application in a timely manner. Written feedback will be provided for their individual reports.
