1 SEQUENCE OF MASTER S DEGREE DIPLOMA WORK 1.1 Contents of diploma work The Master s degree includes diploma work which accounts for a minimum of 20 credits and a maximum of 40 credits. The diploma work may be 1. artistic work, which includes a written section 2. a thesis The diploma work demonstrates the student s ability to work independently, their ability to show their own artistic outlook and their familiarity with the subject area of their professional sector. Diploma work for the Department of Dance and Theatre Pedagogy must always have a pedagogical perspective. The aim of the diploma work is to illustrate the artistic outlook of the graduating student and his/her growth to become an artist. A diploma work covering a wide ranging or otherwise extremely demanding topic can be done by two or several students working together. However, it must be possible to show and assess the student s independent part of the work. The Master s studies and programme degree requirements and the department s instructions give more detailed information about the diploma work, its scope, completing it and its examination. Artistic work and written section The artistic section of the diploma work is done from the student s own education or Master s programme area. If the student wishes to depart from this, it must be justified in the diploma work plan. The reasons are to be given to the Teaching Council when the diploma work is considered by the Council. The written section does not necessarily have to be linked to the artistic work, but it should however incorporate the student s own degree or Master s programme perspective. This is defined in more detail in the degree requirements. The artistic part of the diploma work must be done under professional conditions. In the artistic work, the student is demonstrating their own artistic/art pedagogical outlook. On the one hand, s/he demonstrates the capability for independent artistic work and on the other hand, the ability to work in an artistic working group as well as their competence as a professional. The Theatre Academy s own diploma work performances are recorded centrally. The student must make sure that diploma work performances elsewhere are recorded and must ensure that they have permission to record. Recording is needed for example in cases where the examiner is not able to attend the performance. The written section should demonstrate familiarity with the subject area of the diploma work or professional sector and a readiness to communicate issues in the artistic field. The work presents factors related to the choice of subject, its treatment and conclusions. The written section must include some reflection on the work. The length of the written section, depending on the nature of the work, should be from pages not including the table of contents and sources and without appendices. The written section may also be the documenting, planning and evaluating the artistic work process in accordance with the degree requirements of the degree or Master s programme. The department will give guidelines regarding the scope and contents of the written section. 2

Thesis The thesis is a piece of scientific work. In the work, the student must demonstrate a capability for independent scientific thought, familiarity with the subject of the thesis, mastery of the research methods required and a capability for scientific communication of the artistic research issues brought up. The thesis requires an ability to handle and master problems as well as an ability to evaluate, utilise and disseminate research findings from their field. The thesis may include an empirical part. The thesis is a piece of written work to which can be added, for example, visual and/or audio material or material online. The length of the thesis is about 60 pages. 1.2 Diploma work plan The student will discuss the subject of the diploma work, its objectives, research question and publicity for the diploma work with the Professor of education or Master s programme or with a lecturer delegated by the Professor. The student will draw up a diploma work plan and submit it to the coordinator responsible for the degree or Master s programme. The diploma work plan must show the subject of the diploma work (artistic work and written section separately), how it will be implemented and the timetable. The diploma work supervisors and examiners names should also be shown in the plan. The Professor of the degree or Master s programme will approve the plan. The diploma work plan is to be ready before implementation of the artistic work. Supervisors The student will receive an minimum of six hours of supervision for producing their diploma work. Supervision may also be given for artistic work. The student must contact the supervisor(s) and agree meetings. Examiners The recommendation of the Teaching Council is that one of the examiners should be external and that the other will usually be a permanent member of the teaching staff of the Theatre Academy or an associate member of the teaching staff. A student taking a first degree at the Theatre Academy cannot be an examiner for the diploma work. The supervisor of the diploma work cannot be an examiner for the diploma work. Exceptional practice must be based on diploma work guidelines for the degree or Master s programme which provide additional detail to these guidelines. The student will inform the examiner of the times of the performance of the artistic work. The coordinator responsible will take care of other contact with the supervisors. A person who has a relationship with the producer of the diploma work as specified in section 28 of the Administrative Procedure Act (434/2003) may not be an examiner for the diploma work. In accordance with the Administrative Procedure Act, a person is disqualified: 1. if s/he or someone close to him/her is an interested party; 2. if s/he or someone close to him/her helps or represents an interested party or a person for whom the outcome of the issue may be expected to have particular benefit or harm; 3. if the outcome of the issue may be expected to have particular benefit or harm to him/her or someone close to him/her; 4. if s/he has an employment relationship or has a commission in relation to the issue being considered with an interested party or someone for whom the outcome of the issue may be expected to have particular benefit or harm; 5. if s/he or someone close to him/her is a member of the board, supervisory board or similar institution or managing director or in a similar position in such an association, foundation, stateowned enterprise or a company which is an interested party or someone for whom the outcome of the issue may be expected to have particular benefit or harm; 3

6. if s/he or someone close to him/her is a member of the management team or similar body of an agency or institution and the issue at hand is linked to the supervision or control of that agency or institution; or 7. if confidence in his/her impartiality is compromised for some other special reason. Someone close means: 1. the spouse of an official and the official's child, grandchild, sibling, parent, grandparent and any other person who is particularly close to the official as well as this person s spouse; 2. the sibling of the official s parent and their spouse, an official s sibling s children and an official s previous spouse; as well as 3. an official s spouse s child, grandchild, sibling, parent and grandparent as well as such a person s spouse and the children of the official s spouse s siblings. Half-relatives are also considered as someone close. Spouse refers to living people who are married or living as married and those in a registered couple relationship. Time limits for diploma work plan If the diploma work is not approved by the Teaching Council within two years of the diploma work plan being approved, the student must submit a new diploma work plan for approval. The Professor will then decide how the old diploma work plan will be used or updated. 1.3 Language of diploma work The diploma work for the Master s degree is done primarily in the language of the degree. The student however has the right to do their diploma work in their own native language (Finnish/Swedish) irrespective of the language of the degree. The director of the department will decide with respect to languages other than Finnish or Swedish being used as the diploma work language. 1.4 Diploma work seminar Preparing the diploma work includes a diploma work seminar or corresponding study period. There is more detailed information about seminars in the degree requirements. 1.5 Writing the diploma work The Master s diploma work is written on a prepared diploma work template which also includes a summary of the work. The summary presents the core content of the diploma work in a way that enables the reader to form a clear overall picture of the objectives, content and results of the diploma work. The length of the summary is about I page. 1.6 Submitting diploma work for assessment The completed diploma work, with its summary attached, is submitted for examination when the supervisor gives permission. The student must take note that the supervisor must have a reasonable amount of time for the initial examination. The student submits a single copy of the completed diploma work produced using the diploma work template electronically to the library. The library will produce three printed versions of the diploma work (for the library, the department and the student). The library will be responsible for the printing costs of the three copies. If the student so wishes, s/he may design and have their diploma work printed in a different version in addition to the version printed through the library at his/her own cost. 4

1.7 Appeal The student will submit the examiners copies of the diploma work as well as any other documents linked to it to the responsible coordinator. The student is responsible for the associated costs. The coordinator will submit the diploma work to the examiners. The diploma work is to be submitted for examination in good time so that the examiners have at least 4 weeks to examine the diploma work. The examiners statements are submitted to the responsible coordinator 14 days before the meeting of the Teaching Council at which the diploma work is due to be assessed. The submission dates for diploma work are announced separately each academic year. The degree or Master s programme coordinator passes on the statements received from the examiners to the student. If the examiner(s) propose that the diploma work should fail the student can 1. give the Teaching Council their own written response to the statements, and the Teaching Council will then take the response into consideration when dealing with the student s diploma work; 2. withdraw their diploma work from the list of diploma works to be assessed. In this case s/he will make corrections to their diploma work and submit the corrected diploma work for reexamination. The Teaching Council can either pass or fail the diploma work. Diploma work that passes may be given a grade passed with honours. The student may appeal against the decision of the Teaching Council (fail of the diploma work or grade) in writing within 14 days from the time when it was possible for him/her to have received information about the assessment. A student who is dissatisfied with the result of the decision of the Teaching Council resulting from their appeal may have the matter referred to the student s rights board. The request for correction is submitted to the head of Student Administration. 1.8 Making public and archiving diploma work The diploma work becomes public when the chairman of the Teaching Council has signed the minutes of the meeting. The diploma works are parts of research which will be openly evaluated. Making them public aims at equality of evaluation of diploma work. The diploma works are stored in the library and they are publically available for reading, but they are not issued for use at home. The written part of the diploma work may be published on the Theatre Academy's web pages if the student has given their agreement. 1.9 Registering diploma work The diploma work is entered on the transcripts register as soon as it has been approved in its entirety (both the artistic work and the written section) Time limits for diploma work According to the degree rules for the Theatre Academy s first degrees the whole diploma work entered on the transcripts register expires in five years. The diploma work plan expires in two years. The diploma work artistic work expires if the associated written section is not returned within two years of the performance time agreed with the examiner Maturity examination The maturity examination is to be taken for the Master s degree after the diploma work has been submitted for evaluation. In the maturity examination, the student has to show that s/he has mastery of their native language and that they are familiar with the subject area of their diploma work. Once a student has demonstrated their Finnish or Swedish language skills for the bachelor s degree, s/he does 5

not need to demonstrate it again for the Master s degree. However, familiarity with the subject of the diploma work must be demonstrated in the maturity examination for both degrees Language of maturity examination The maturity examination is usually written in the student s native language (Finnish/Swedish). A bilingual student may decide in which language s/he wishes to write the maturity examination. By taking the maturity examination in Finnish or Swedish (native language), the student is considered to have demonstrated the level of language that is required of civil servants. The student s native language is determined according to the language of education, i.e. in which language the student completed the studies required for the Academy. In practice this means the language of studies at senior high school. If a student does not take the maturity examination in their language of education, s/he is responsible for demonstrating that they have achieved the required level of language in some other manner. If the student s native language is some other than Finnish or Swedish, the department director will make the decision regarding the language for the diploma work and maturity examination. In such a case, English is recommended as the language for the diploma work and maturity examination, but other languages can be considered Taking the maturity examination The maturity examination must be taken before the diploma work is approved. The maturity examination is taken on the normal examination days. In the event that the normal examination days are not suitable for the student, s/he must agree a time for taking the examination with the department. The time for the examination is four hours. The examination time can be extended for people with dyslexia. The supervisor of the diploma work, the second examiner or the study programme professor will write the question(s) for the maturity examination which the student will answer without their diploma work or other material related to the subject. The writer of the maturity examination question(s) will examine the contents of the maturity examination and check that the maturity examination demonstrates an excellent level of skill in Finnish or Swedish. The language examination is carried out if the student has not demonstrated their Finnish or Swedish language skills in the bachelor s degree maturity examination. If necessary, the examination of the language may be carried out by an external language examiner. The maturity examination is graded pass or fail. Maturity examination papers are kept at the department for six months Applying for the degree certificate 1.13 Copyright Once the diploma work has been approved and all of the study tasks have been completed, the student applies for their Master s degree certificate using the Services for Study and Research form. The form is on the Intranet under For students/forms/diploma work summary. The certificate can be collected on the diploma issue dates. The timetable for the diploma issue dates is on the Intranet. The Theatre Academy organises a public graduation event once each term. Information concerning copyright for people at the Theatre Academy can be found at the following address: 6

2 DIRECTING THE DIPLOMA WORK The degree or Master s programme Professor approves the diploma work plan in which the names of the supervisors and examiners of the diploma work are entered. The supervisor of the written section discusses the objectives of the work with the student, deals with practical questions relating to the progress of the work and monitors the achieving of milestones. The supervisor comments on the student s work, gives feedback on the content and monitors the practical progress of the work. The feedback however has to be at a sufficiently generalised level so that the supervisor does not become the author of the diploma work. It is recommended that the student and supervisor make a supervision plan for the work and the process moves forward in accordance with it. This ensures that both have the time needed to do their work. The supervising lecturer has to be active with regard to supervision and to keep in touch with the student so the work progresses. The supervisor of the written section needs to draw attention to clear errors of substance and also pay attention to the form of language. Any possible language check should be done at this stage before the diploma work is submitted for examination. The diploma work is available publically to be read in the Theatre Academy s library. The supervisor therefore must talk with the student about the public nature of the work if the written section of the diploma work is sensitive in nature or contains any material that is to be kept confidential. Sensitive material can be placed in an appendix to the diploma work and it is then not publically available material. The supervisor must also have a good knowledge of ethical rules so that cases of plagiarism in theses can be detected for example. The role of the supervisor of the diploma work s written section is to examine the work in advance and give permission for the work to be submitted for examination. The student must take note that the supervisor must have at least a week for the initial examination. Once the diploma work has been sent to the examiner, no further corrections can be made to it. 3 EXAMINATION AND ASSESSMENT OF DIPLOMA WORK 3.1 Role of the examiners The role of the examiners is to assess the parts that make up the diploma work in their written statement. Separate statements for the different parts of the diploma work are not produced, but instead the examiners assess all the parts together in the same statement and give their proposed grade for the diploma work as a whole. In special cases an examiner may assess just one part, for example when the examiner is not able to watch the performance. 3.2 Examination timetable The student has to submit their diploma work for examination in good time so that the examiners have at least 4 weeks to examine it. The student will inform the examiner of the times of the performance of the artistic work. The examiners submit their statements to the responsible coordinator who passes them on to the Teaching Council. The statements must be given to the coordinator no later than 14 days before the Teaching Council meeting at which the work is to be assessed. The examiner s statement is an expert statement in which the professional contextual knowledge, artistic level, demonstration of learning, the interest of the subject and its topicality, the ability to reflect, the clarity of the structure of the work and its coherence, as well as the correct use of language, are assessed. 7

3.3 Statements regarding the diploma work The examiners may confer in giving a statement. They may also write a joint statement. The statement is addressed to the Teaching Council. The length of the statement is 2 5 pages. It is recommended that the statement also mentions whether the producer of the diploma work meets the requirements for further studies. The diploma work can be failed if it does not satisfy the requirements set for a Master s diploma work or if fraudulent methods have been used in its production. If the Teaching Council fails a diploma work, the student may supplement the written section or the thesis according to the comments of the examiner or produce a completely new piece of work. With the approval of the Professor, the student may also supplement the artistic work part of their diploma work plan so that the student produces additional work to supplement their previous performance or produces a completely new piece of artistic work. Diploma work to be submitted to the coordinator for examination no later than Examiners statements to be submitted to the coordinator no later than Teaching council meeting In assessing the diploma work, the grades of passed with honours, passed and failed are used and it is recommended that the use of the grade passed with honours be limited to cases where the diploma work has special merit. The examiner will indicate in his/her statement, what grade s/he proposes for the diploma work and the basis of their proposal. The examiners may discuss their proposed grade together. The examiner signs and dates the statement. The final statement and invoice for the fee are submitted to the responsible coordinator. The statement may be submitted as an original or scanned. The examiner must clearly indicate in the statement whether s/he proposes that the diploma work should be passed or failed. The statement will finish, for example, as follows: I propose / I do not propose that the diploma work submitted by Name should be passed for the Master s degree in theatre art / dance art. The examiner proposes that the diploma work should be passed or failed. If it is proposed that the diploma work should be failed, the examiner(s) must give the basis for this proposal. The Teaching Council makes the decision as to whether the diploma work is passed or failed. The examiner however does not, while examining the work, propose corrections to the producer of the work that would gain a pass recommendation in the statement. The coordinator of the degree or Master s programme gives the examiners statements to the student. If the examiner(s) propose that the diploma work should be failed, the student may 1) give the Teaching Council their own written response to the statements, and the Teaching Council will then take the response into consideration when dealing with the student s diploma work; 2) withdraw their 8

diploma work from the list of diploma works to be assessed. In this case s/he will make corrections to their diploma work and submit the corrected diploma work for re-examination. 3.4 Bases of assessment The diploma work is graded pass with honours, pass or fail. Assessment is based on the degree and Master s requirements presented in the skill objectives for the Master s diploma work. The assessment criteria are appended to these guidelines. 3.5 Assessing diploma work The Teaching Council will pass or fail the diploma work on the basis of the examiners statement. The Teaching Council is not bound by the examiners grading proposals. The diploma work however can only be assessed as pass with honours if both examiners propose that. If the Council decides to fail or pass the diploma work contrary to the examiner s proposals, the justification for the decision must be given. 9

Source references in the text Bibliography Source references have the author s surname and the date of publication of the text in curved brackets. In addition, the page number is given when it is necessary to refer exactly to a specific part of the text, such as a definition, graph, table or argument: (Hakala 1999, ). If there are two authors, both names are given: (Tarkoma & Kolari 1995, 140). If there are three or more authors, all the names are given when the first reference is made to their work: (Hirsjärvi, Remes & Sajavaara 1998, 330). Later references to the same text use a shorter form: (Hirsjärvi et. al 1998, 330). The same reference can be used to refer to several sources simultaneously. In this case the different sources are differentiated using semi-colons. The order may be by importance, alphabetical or year of publication. E.g. (Anttila 2001; Kyrö 2004; Nurmi 2003). The scope of a quotation is indicated by the position of the full stop. When the reference concerns a single sentence, the full stop comes after the curved bracket: At the same time as you find a source text that seems competent, your work changes to become some kind of investigative reading" (Hakala 1999, 107). When the quotation requires several sentences, the full stop comes before the curved bracket i.e. the quotation has its own full stop: At the same time as - - you find a source text that seems competent, your work changes to become some kind of investigative reading. From the very beginning, reading this should aim at a deeper analysis- -. (Hakala 1999, 107.) The bibliography is added at the end of the piece of writing. The bibliography is drawn up in alphabetical order of the author s surname. The author s surnamne, forename, year of publication, name of the work, publisher and place of publication are given for the sources. For journals and collections of articles the page numbers are also given. The bibliography only lists those documents that are referenced in the text. Monograph (single work) Surname, Forename Year: Name of work, Subtitle. Publisher, Place of publication. E.g. Kyrö, Paula 2004: Research process as a pathway of choices. Tampere University, Research Centre for Vocational Education, Saarijärvi. If the same author has several works in the sources, the works are listed in the bibliography in order of publication date; oldest first. If the same author has several works from the same year, then use additional marks a, b, c, etc to distinguish them. The additional marks are added after the year of publication without a space.
