2 The Context... The Internet is the best vehicle for the dissemination of science & technology information services. Explosive Growth of the Internet and capillarity of brazilian backbones. Nowadays, any initiative for the implementation of network services must consider na integration with the Internet. The information provider is also the maintainer of the information. Internet technology (client/server; java; etc) enables the customer to directly access the information

4 RNP... The mission: disseminate Internet technology and applications mainly for educational and social purposes. History: 1991: Phase I: implementation of a strictly academic backbone. 1995: Phase II: connectivity upgrade (speed and capillarity). Admittance of both commercial connectivity and traffic. Phase III: implementation of the new generation of Internet technologies to serve the academic community.

11 Science and Technology Network Initiatives... Guides for Network Information Sources - IBICT Specific methodology to the creation and maintenance of multiple distributed databases in a descentralized and standardized form. Information providers, such as governamental agencies, research centers, universities, private sector, create and update its own database/guide following the guide methodology. Guides may cover a wide variety of areas: sciences, humanities, biosciences, engineering, agriculture etc. Database information refer to six modules: organizations, database, specialists/researchers, events, software and documents.

14 Science and Technology Network Initiatives... PADCT Net Collection, organization, evaluation and dissemination of information on the projects financed by the PADCT-II. Each project coordinator is responsible for updating the database wirh all quantitative and qualitative information on the project. The system offers several possibilities regarding: - research projects - databases - laboratories - organizations - established patents - scientific production - published papers - events, courses, internships - etc. Among other major PADCT-II subprograms, which can be specified in a search, is the New Material Engineering Subprogram.
