2 NR Program Background Navy Nuclear Propulsion Program founded in 1948 Currently operating: 104 reactors (US commercial industry) 11 nuclear powered aircraft carriers (more under construction) 71 submarines (~4 under construction) Two land-based prototypes Two Moored Training Ships (one more in development) Nuclear-powered warships comprise more than 45 percent of all the Navy s major combatants. Over 6100 reactor years of operation and more than 150 million miles steamed since the beginning of the Program without a reactor plant accident.
