In addition, master s degree students must also demonstrate proficiency in professional communication. 2

3 A CTU Employer Profile Susan Geller, MCI Worldcom At MCI Worldcom, it's all about making connections. For its customers, MCI Worldcom provides high-quality telecommunications a million times each day. To succeed, MCI Worldcom connects its current and future employees to what they need: high-quality continuing education. Through a relationship with CTU, MCI Worldcom employees are given the option of two customized Master's of Computer Science programs. These programs are offered at MCI's Garden of the Gods campus in Colorado Springs, Colorado. "Our information technology executives realize the value in keeping employees and not breaking our learning cycle," says Susan Geller, MCI Worldcom's Senior Manager of Knowledge Services. "Offering these degrees helps us retain the best people, and also helps retool their knowledge and skills. These classes at our own facilities are a major convenience for employees," Geller says. In our fast-paced business, it's hard to cut into the workday, but we feel very strongly about continuing education. So, it's worth it." MCI Worldcom and its employees benefit directly from the "connected" nature of CTU's specially designed coursework. "We're able to infuse our development tools into CTU's educational processes, so everything is very directly connected," Geller says. "The Capstone Project is actually an MCI deliverable; that is, coding toward a product or system that will actually be used," Geller says. "It's meaningful work, not something abstract." The success of the partnership has Geller working to broaden CTU's reach into other MCI Worldcom locations. "I don't want to work with another institution. CTU is tried-and-true, and there's nothing that they're not doing for us." 3

4 Computer Engineering (CS) (MSCE) The Master of Science in Computer Engineering program is designed to prepare engineering professionals for the demands of today s rapidly changing computer industry environment. The program is focused on modern systems design by selective integration of fundamental hardware and software engineering topics and leading edge technologies. The program is designed to prepare the student for upper level positions of responsibility within the computer industry. Upon completion of the MSCE program a graduate will be able to: Apply advanced techniques to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems Apply state-of-the-practice technology and in-depth knowledge to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within the context of: - Computer hardware systems - Computer software systems - Digital signal processing - Computer networks and communications - Selected related areas, such as advanced digital communications, optics, digital control systems, space communications, and modern software systems Apply advanced hardware and software engineering tools necessary for state-of-the-practice design Apply advanced, technical, oral and written communication tools necessary for industry leadership The master s degree consists of two phases: course work and the completion phase, which has two options. Option A consists of additional course work (three courses). Option B entails completion of an applied capstone project (two courses). 16 Business Administration (e-business MBA) (CS, DV, selected courses online) Colorado Technical University's MBA with an e-business concentration prepares tomorrow's technological business leaders. Drawing on the strength of our leadership as a technical university, we have combined the MBA program's general management orientation and its emphasis on executive skills development with a concentration composed of courses in the dynamic field of e-business. There is a growing recognition among business leaders that technical professionals need an understanding of businessrelated subjects and that business professionals need grounding in technological issues so that they may take advantage of the full range of opportunities for e-business within organizations. We recognize that e-business goes beyond e-commerce and view e-business as the structuring of an organization around technology to achieve a coherent, flexible approach to meet organizational and enterprise demands. The Master of Business Administration with a concentration in e-business provides students with an understanding of the fundamental issues related to the role that e-business will play in business now and in the future. The business environment has been transformed by technology. It is more competitive and rapidly changing than ever before. Business organizations without a strong technical focus are not positioned to adapt to change nor to compete effectively. Additive solutions may work in the short-run, but ultimately result in islands of automation only partially integrated into the enterprise. The solution to this problem is the development of managers with technical and business savvy who can take an enterprise view of the organization, who can create new business paradigms with technology to develop organizations that meet business requirements, are organized for responsive change, and can continue to evolve to capitalize on emerging technology. The program has been developed with the help of an industry advisory board of e-business experts including CEO's, CIO's, and VP's to help equip professionals with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the digital economy. The program is structured in a way that not only exposes students to important technological tools and concepts that impact how business is conducted but, more importantly, examines these issues from a managerial perspective. It is designed to educate a new generation of business leaders, planners, managers, technologyfocused personnel, entrepreneurs and executives in both the technology and business aspects of e-business. The graduates of this program will be ready to take on challenging positions in industry and to act as catalysts of change. A student who successfully completes an e-business MBA should as a result of this concentration be able to: Understand e-business technology components sufficiently well for planning and management Define organizational requirements from an enterprise viewpoint Capture existing operational procedures and constraints for the purpose of organizational transformation Use competitive analysis, technological trends, marketing and financial information, and current business models to build a case for change to better meet organizational requirements Develop strategic plans for organizing an e-business Manage the implementation, on-going operations, and proactive changes for an e-business to achieve organizational success 16

Other certificates may be available depending on courses taken; students should consult an advisor for further information.
