Polyurethane was first developed by Dr. Otto Bayer of the Bayer Corporation in Germany during 1937 Polyurethane was initially utilized as fabric coatings in applications during World War ll
Flexible foams were developed in the late-1950 s for furniture cushioning i and other uses Rigid spray foams were used for high performance roofing and insulation in the mid-1960 s, where temperatures were specialized and controlled (storage for produce)
SPF - Spray Polyurethane Foam PUF - Poly Urethane Foam Spray Foam A masonry house that is covered with ccspf before stucco is applied on the outside so it will look like adobe (common in Santa Fe, New Mexico and desert Southwest).
Not Related: Polystyrene y (EPS)- Styrofoam Dow Board Amino-Plast Resins (block fill foams) Urea-formaldehyde Related: Polyisocyanurate (iso) boards Foam board Aerosol cans of polyurethane foams
Masonry walls require additional controls to deal with heat, air and water intrusion Water barrier Air Barrier Moisture Vapor Control Thermal Control

SPF is produced d when the two chemicals polyol l and an isocyanate are equally mixed together in the presence of catalysts and other additives using a specially engineered spray applicator system. Trained applicators apply it as a liquid to the masonry block wall. The chemicals, sprayed as a liquid, react, expand, and cure in place, forming a seamless insulating and damp-proofing membrane. Masons then install brick facing over the foam. Standard anchors tie the brick facing to the block wall.
Please click on the image to play the video There are two types of SPF used for insulation: Open-cell SPF ocspf Closed-cell SPF ccspf This presentation will be discussing Closed-cell SPF (ccspf) as the open-cell systems are not normally appropriate for masonry walls.
Seamless: No boards have to be abutted or fitted into oddly shaped spaces. An excellent barrier to dust, drafts, pollen and noise pollution. Monolithic: The product is one material; there are no facers or special supporting elements required. Fully adhered to block: No special attachment methods or fasteners are required. The liquid bonds to the substrate and foams up, expanding in place. Adheres to any masonry or construction material including CMU, poured concrete, primed steel, brick, laminates, wood, and exterior sheathing boards.
Closed cell content Greater than 90% R value ~6.4/ inch Air permeance psf Moisture vapor permeance Water seal ability Compressive strength Class II Vapor Retarder No Water >40 ft. Hydrostatic Pressure > 20 psi FEMA flood resistance Class 4
Closed-cell: The heat generated by the foam reaction vaporizes the blowing agent forming bubbles bbl containing i a high h R-value, inert gas. The bubbles are captured in the foam matrix forming a membrane of microscopic cells (bubbles) which are highly resistant to heat flow. Therefore, the high R-value per inch of thickness. Closed-cell density: lbs/cu ft. typical for insulation Expansion factor ~ 30:1 Easy to spray in layers to build up desired thickness Blowing Agent - HFC
Pre 1990: Blowing agent was Freon 11 CFC C (Chloro-Fluoro-Carbon) o o Ca Freon contained too much chlorine and considered an ozone depletion material : HCFC (Hydro-Chloro-Fluoro-Carbon) A bit more environmentally friendly than Freon 2005 (no chlorine, EPA approved): HFC (Hydro-Fluoro-Carbon) HC (Hydro-Carbon) A form of pentane Used primarily in in-plant operations
High R-value (1 = R-6.4) Foam Thickness (Inches) R value Test Method: ASTM C 518
Wall thickness can be reduced or higher R-values can be installed in the available space.
Air leakage Allowed cfm/ft² Measured cfm/ft² Test Method: ASTM E 283
SPF s closed-cell, fully adhered and void less application stops air movement into, out of, and within building assemblies. Will seal the irregular shapes of steel I beams, corrugated roof decks, and dissimilar construction material interfaces. Electrical l lines, block and steel junctions, and other wall protrusions are completely sealed. Please click on Please click on each of the images to play the video
Moisture vapor retarder Moisture Permeance Less than 1.0 perm Class II Vapor Retarder Test Result inch 2 inch Test Method: ASTM E96
Moisture in the air will travel from areas of high concentration to areas of lower concentration, or from wet to dry. Most moisture movement is in conjunction with air movement. Where air movement is blocked, the moisture vapor can diffuse through a layer or material that does not permit air passage. Gypsum drywall is a good example, which stops air but permits moisture vapor to diffuse through it very quickly. The movement of moisture it vapor is referred dto as vapor drive. di Controlling the vapor drive is key to preventing condensation and the resulting water problems in a building assembly.
Building assemblies (walls, roofs, floors) must be designed to deal with vapor drive. In most climate zones, walls are required to have a moisture vapor retarder on the warm side of the insulation. The problem in most climate zones is the warm side changes with the seasons or time of day resulting in a vapor retarder coating or membrane on the insulation surface being on the wrong side.
SPF s closed-cell membrane is a moisture vapor retarder which permits moisture vapor diffusion slowly through the foam layer. Where other vapor retarder films or coatings are limited to one side of the thermal boundary, ccspf is both the thermal boundary and moisture retarder. No matter which direction the vapor drive, it is always on the correct side. ccspf will easily cover the irregular shapes of steel I beams, corrugated roof decks, and dissimilar construction material interfaces, providing the moisture vapor control to be continuous and effective.
The SPF system is continuous and can fill in large gaps and joints in the CMU wall. The result is a dramatically effective barrier to heat transfer and air and water infiltration. Building owners and occupants will save energy and lessen the likelihood lih for mold and mildew. The spray polyurethane foam system costs about the same as conventional water sealing. Masonry Cavity Wall: SPF is applied to exterior side of block wythe. SPF is covered by brick veneer.
Water infiltration Allowed No Water Penetration Test Result No Water Penetration at 56 feet head pressure Test Method: AATCC 127 Suter Hydrostatic Pressure Resistance Test
Closed-cell polyurethane foam does not permit the penetration of water No seams or gaps to hold water forms a drainage plane. Water drains to weep areas and less drying is required
Seals walls to roof decks, creating a water barrier that eliminates the damage and possible health effects of wind-driven rain Please click on the image to Please click on the image to play the video
Lessens potential mold and mildew problems
Compressive Strength Structural will support loads Test Result >20 psi Test Method: ASTM D1621
Exterior water seal will support back fill Cannot use open cell foams where it is expected to come in contact with water

Adds strength: SPF s full adhesion adds considerable stiffness to building assemblies. Air impermeable: Air will not penetrate SPF and air cannot bypass because it is seamless and fully adhered. The air does not circulate in foam. Retards moisture: Slows the passage of moisture vapor, with closed-cell having a much slower passage than open-cell. The foam appears uneven to ensure an authentic mud covered appearance like lk the original adobe homes of the Southwest..
Energy efficient: Spray Foam is considered energy efficient since it is able to seal any construction gaps or tiny cracks, eliminating all heat flow bypass of the insulation membrane. Zero air leakage and zero water leakage: Conventional construction areas that are very difficult to insulate, and seal against water and air are easily accommodated with SPF. Eliminates thermal bridging and thermal bypass associated with preformed boards.
FEMA Class 4 flood resistant material Building code compliant Environmentally friendly: Spray polyurethane foam insulation results from environmentally friendly chemical and production processes. It is completely non- toxic after installation.
Design capabilities: Because SPF is a spray application, it will conform to any ygeometric shape. This offers architects many design options. SPF is flexible and adaptable, so it will adhere to any creative feature, corner or curve that your building might have.
Building owner benefits: Save on monthly energy bills Provides superior R-value greater than 6 per inch, reducing both heating and cooling costs Improves indoor air quality by keeping out dust and pollutants Provides consistent interior temperatures-no drafts, no cold or hot spots Reduces outside noise by creating a seamless, airtight insulated barrier Never settles, shrinks, compresses or sags, maintaining its insulation efficiency for the life of the building
Closed-cell spray foam One single product, one single application. Water barrier Air Barrier Moisture Vapor Control Thermal Control

In traditional exterior and interior masonry or concrete wall construction, high heat transfer of the masonry is very inefficient and provides a cold surface which can set up condensation situations leading to water damage and mold growth. Traditional masonry cavity wall construction utilizes a damp proof coating applied to the exterior of the CMU (concrete masonry units) wyth followed by the installation of preformed insulation board between the brick ties or wall cladding attachments. This often leaves large gaps, breaks, and holes in the water seal and insulation at joints and penetrations: the wall would be wasteful of energy and vulnerable to air and water infiltration.
CMU (Typical) Face Brick Anchors (Typical) Spray Polyurethane Foam
Preparation: Clean masonry substrate of substances which would interfere with the adhesion of the spray polyurethane foam. Construction gaps of 2 or more can be covered with butyl seam tape or gypsum backer board before the application of SPF. Mask adjacent materials as needed to prevent overspray. Test substrate with moisture detection paper (MDP) to affirm that p p ( ) the substrate is dry.
Application: Apply spray polyurethane foam directly to the masonry block in accordance to the manufacturer s installation instructions. All surfaces to be sprayed with foam must be free of all forms of moisture and ice. Surfaces can be checked with MDP strips prior to and during foam application. Do not apply spray polyurethane foam during inclement weather or when ambient temperature and humidity are outside the ranges prescribed by the manufacturer.
Detail: Wall Section at Footer
Detail: Typical Joint at Steel Column
In traditional masonry wall insulation, preformed boards can restrict your design options, allowing for only flat walls and surfaces. Corners are not seamless and allow for air and moisture to pass through.
Examples of typical installation of rigid foam boards for insulation
Examples of spray polyurethane foam insulation, which is applied seamlessly
The SPF is used as an exterior insulator for an industrial tank to help control temperatures. SPF applied to masonry block with brick veneer over lower section with metal framing to support a different exterior covering on the upper section.
Corner column installation: certified applicators install SPF in the corner columns of a building. Please click on the image to Please click on the image to play the video
Brick installation: masons install brick facing over the foam. Standard anchors tie brick facing to the block wall.
Detail: Interior wall stud framing Note: stud framing off set from the masonry with the SPF application behind and around the stud
Traditional masonry wall construction utilizes stud framing with a fiber based insulation installed between stud framing, which leaves gaps and thermal shunts, resulting in heat loss and cold spots that are prone to moisture problems. By offsetting the framing from the masonry and spraying SPF behind and around the studs, a monolithic membrane with no thermal shunts or gaps is created, eliminating heat bypass, air and water infiltration and resulting moisture problems.
