2 ESR sheathing for conventional light-frame wood construction as braced wall panels within designated braced wall lines as defined in IBC Section and IRC Section R and as structural sheathing for continuously sheathed braced walls in accordance with IRC Section R The panels may also be used to resist transverse wind loads. When installed in accordance with this report, the panels are an alternative to the water-resistive barrier specified in IBC Section and IRC Section R703.2, and may be installed in attic areas on the exterior face of the exterior wall framing without an ignition barrier on the interior side of the wall framing. 3.0 DESCRIPTION 3.1 General: STYROFOAM SIS Structural Insulated Sheathing and STYROFOAM SIS Plus Structural Insulated Sheathing are structural, rigid insulation board products. The boards are available in a nominal thickness of ½ inch (12.7 mm) and widths between 48 and 60 inches (1219 and 1520 mm). Standard lengths include: 96, 108 and 120 inches (2438, 2743 and 3048 mm). STYROFOAM SIS Plus is also available up to 1 inch (25.4 mm) nominal thickness. 3.2 Materials STYROFOAM SIS and STYROFOAM SIS Plus consist of a proprietary fibrous sheathing board laminated on one side to a foam plastic insulation board, which has facers on one or both sides The proprietary fibrous sheathing board is a laminated board made of fibered, specially treated piles that are pressure-laminated. The surface finish consists of a

3 ESR facer on one or both sides. STYROFOAM SIS utilizes a inch (2.9 mm) nominal thickness fibrous sheathing board, and STYROFOAM SIS Plus utilizes a inch (3.48 mm) nominal thickness fibrous sheathing board. The foam plastic insulation is rigid polyisocyanurate and may have facings on one or both sides. The foam plastic insulation has a flame-spread index of 75 or less and a smokedeveloped index of 450 or less when tested for surface-burning characteristics in accordance with ASTM E The STYROFOAM SIS TM and STYROFOAM SIS TM Plus panels are considered vapor retarders and have a vapor permeance less than 1.0 perm. The panels have an air permeance less than 0.02 L/s.m 2, when tested in accordance with ASTM E 283 and are considered air impermeable. 3.3 Joint Sealing Tapes: Joint sealing tape used with the system when it is applied as a water resistive barrier is minimum 2-7/8-inch-wide (73 mm) WEATHERMATE TM Construction Tape. 4.0 INSTALLATION 4.1 General: STYROFOAM SIS TM and STYROFOAM SIS TM Plus panels may be installed vertically or horizontally over wood-framed walls, with minimum nominal 2-by framing spaced a maximum of 24 inches (406 mm) on center and fasteners placed not less than 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) from sheathing edges. All joints and edges must be backed by framing. The panels are installed with the fibrous sheathing board facing the

Fasteners are applied in a single row along each panel edge and may be countersunk beneath the surface of the foam plastic When installed as structural bracing or to resist transverse loads, fastening must be as described in Section 4.2 or 4.5, respectively. If the panel is not required for structural bracing or to resist transverse loads, the panels may be installed as follows: Minimum inch-diameter-shank (2.87 mm) nail with a 1-inch (25.4 mm) minimum embedment into framing, with fasteners spaced at 6 inches on center on vertical panels edges and on top and bottom plates, and at 12 inches (305 mm) in the field of the panel; or ½- or 1-inch (12.7 or 25.4 mm) crown, No. 16 gage staples, with minimum 1- inch (25.4 mm) embedment into framing, with fasteners spaced at 6 inches (152 mm) on center on vertical panel edges and at top and bottom plates, and at 12 inches (305 mm) on center in the field of the panel. 4.2 Braced Wall Panels Conventional Construction Bracing in Conventional Light Frame Construction: STYROFOAM SIS TM and STYROFOAM SIS TM Plus panels may be used to brace walls of buildings of conventional light-frame wood construction described in Section of the IBC and Section R of the IRC; The panels must be installed as described for bracing Method 4 of IBC Section or IRC Section R as described in Tables 1 or 2 of this report.

5 ESR Continuous Structural Panel Sheathing IRC Section R : For use of the STYROFOAM SIS TM and STYROFOAM SIS TM Plus panels as an alternative to Method 3 continuous structural panel sheathing when installed on all sheathable areas of the braced wall line, installation must be in accordance with this report and Section R , Table R and Figure R of the IRC. Fastener size and spacing noted in Tables 1 and 2 must be used. A minimum of 2 feet (610 mm) of sheathing must be installed at corners in accordance with Figure of the IRC or other allowable methods Seismic Provisions: Recognition in this evaluation report is limited to use of the STYROFOAM SIS TM and STYROFOAM SIS TM Plus panels in Seismic Design Categories A, B and C. Evaluation of STYROFOAM SIS TM and STYROFOAM SIS TM Plus panels for use in buildings for which seismic analysis is required by IBC Section or IRC Section R is outside the scope of this report. 4.3 Water Resistive Barrier: STYROFOAM SIS TM and STYROFOAM SIS TM Plus panels may be used as an alternative to the water-resistive barrier prescribed in IBC Section and IRC Section 703.2, when installed on exterior walls as described in this section The panels are installed vertically with board joints placed directly over exterior wood framing spaced a maximum of 24 inches (610 mm) on center. Fastening of the panels must be as described in Section 4.1 or as described in Tables 1 and

6 ESR All seams and joints between boards must be covered by 2-7/8-inch-wide (73 mm) WEATHERMATE TM Construction Tape. Flashing of openings and penetrating items must be in accordance with the Dow published installation instructions. 4.4 Attic Applications: STYROFOAM SIS TM and STYROFOAM SIS TM Plus panels may be used in attics without the use of an ignition barrier on the interior side of the panels. The structural sheathing must be installed as described in Section 4.1. Ventilation of the attic space must be provided in accordance with applicable code. The panels may be used in conditioned attic assemblies in accordance with IRC Section R Transverse Wind Resistance: When installed as described in Section 4.1 and Tables 1 and 2, STYROFOAM SIS TM and STYROFOAM SIS TM Plus panels have an allowable wind resistance of 50 psf (2.39 kpa), positive or negative. 5.0 CONDITIONS OF USE The STYROFOAM SIS TM and STYROFOAM SIS TM Plus panels described in this report comply with, or are suitable alternatives to what is specified in, those codes listed in Section 1.0 of this report, subject to the following conditions: 5.1 The panels must be installed in accordance with the applicable code, this evaluation report and the manufacturer s published installation instructions. In the event of a conflict between the manufacturer s instructions and this report, this report governs. 5.2 The sheathing material must not be used as a nailing base.

7 ESR Walls sheathed with the panels must not be used to resist horizontal loads from concrete or masonry walls. 5.4 When the panels are not used as braced wall panels as described in Section 4.2, walls must be braced by other materials in accordance with the applicable code. 5.5 The panels are not recognized for use in fire-resistance-rated construction. 5.6 Special inspection complying with IBC Section 1704 must be provided for structures assigned to Seismic Design Category (SDC) C. Special inspections in SDC C must be provided for nailing, bolting, anchoring and other fastening of components within the seismic-force-resisting system, including connections of the braced wall panels and braced wall lines to drag struts and hold-downs, in accordance with IBC Sections to , and A statement of special inspections complying with IBC Section 1705 must be provided to the code official. 5.7 Where used as braced wall panels or in braced wall lines in Exposure B where the basic wind speed is 120 mph or greater and in Exposures C and D where the basic wind speed is 110 mph or greater, special inspection must be provided in accordance with IBC Sections , and , except for buildings designed and constructed in accordance with IBC Section 2308 or the IRC. A statement of special inspections complying with IBC Section 1705 must be provided to the code official.

8 ESR The panels must be separated from the interior of the building by an approved 15 minute thermal barrier, or an ignition barrier where allowed by the applicable code, except where permitted by Section 4.4 of this report. 5.9 In areas where the probability of termite infestation is very heavy in accordance with IBC Section or IRC Section R320.4, the foam plastic must not be placed on exterior walls located within 6 inches (152 mm) of the ground The panels are manufactured by The Dow Chemical Company in Charleston, Illinois, under a quality program with inspections by Intertek Testing Services, NA (AA-690). 6.0 EVIDENCE SUBMITTED 6.1 Data in accordance with the ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria for Laminated Fibrous Board Sheathing Material (AC 295), dated October Data in accordance with the ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria for Racking Shear Evaluation of Proprietary Sheathing Materials Used as Braced Wall Panels (AC 269), dated June Data in accordance with the ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria for Laminated Fibrous Board Sheathing Material Used as a Water-Resistive Barrier (AC 382), dated October Reports of tests in accordance with ASTM E Reports of room corner fire tests in accordance with UBC Standard Reports of tests in accordance with ASTM C Report of tests in accordance with ASTM E 283.

9 ESR IDENTIFICATION STYROFOAM SIS TM and STYROFOAM SIS TM Plus panels are identified by a label on the panel or packaging bearing the Dow Chemical Company name and address, the product name, the manufacturing location (Charleston, Illinois), the lot number, the date of manufacture, the evaluation report number (ESR-2436), and the name or logo of the inspection agency, Intertek Testing Services, NA. The foam plastic insulation is labeled with information on flame spread characteristics and the name of the inspection agency listing the foam plastic, FM Approvals WEATHERMATE TM Construction Tape is identified by the product name This evaluation report is subject to re-examination in one year.
