1 Taskforce: Common Curricular Experience As a result of the New Student Experience at Valencia, Students will be able to successfully navigate the expectations of College. articulate Purpose (attention to life, career, educational goals) choose an academic Pathway to, through and beyond Valencia. maintain a Plan for the timely completion of academic and career goals. establish a connection to Valencia College as a Place where personal development and community enhances learning. maintain meaningful Personal Connections with fellow students and Valencia Faculty and Staff. demonstrate the skills and behaviors associated with the Preparation needed for success. Describe curricular and co curricular program offerings, activities or strategies in support of the new student experience Note: The strategies below are expected course outcomes of the common curricular experience (general, program and embedded) Program Offerings, Activities or Strategy 1 (Description) Students will be able to articulate a personal purpose statement that reflects their educational, career and personal choices as determined by their values, interests, strengths and goals. Identify Primary (P) and Secondary (S) Outcome Categories Associated with each Taskforce Strategy Identification below should reflect a meaningful and measurable connection to the outcomes selected P S Taskforce Strategies Program Offerings, Activities or Strategy 2 (Description) Students will use critical thinking skills to choose an academic program aligned with their educational and career goals, interests, strengths and values based on the outcomes of Purpose, Preparation, Plan, Place and Personal Connection. (Cathy I think we will need to change the end of this one; students don't know about the Ps). Program Offerings, Activities or Strategy 3 (Description) Students will use reasoned judgments in the development of their educational plan including cost, time and program admission requirements and be reasonably committed to their plan. Program Offerings, Activities or Strategy 4 (Description) Students will develop appropriate relationships with peers, faculty and staff while utilizing college resources, including learning support services and academic advising, to enhance their curricular experience. Intended Student Outcome(s) / Student Learning Outcome(s)(Curricular / Co Curricular): Students will describe their strengths, values and goals. Students will assess career options to identify careers that match their strengths, values, interests, and goals. Students will describe their top career choice(s) with a rationale for their decisions. Students will articulate a personal purpose statement that reflects their strengths, values, interests, and goals. the 6 P's (Primary or Secondary) Specifically articulated as Purpose; parallels definition of Plan Curricular / co curricular activity or assignment To be designed by curriculum teams Assessment (Student behavior, performance, artifact) Outcomes will be deemed "measureable" by Wendi Dew and the specific assessments will be developed by the faculty curriculum committees (Summer: initial work completed through PATHWAYS grant, Fall: extensive curriculum design completed through PRESS t)
3 Work to be completed / questions to be answered All strategies will be handed off to the faculty workteams for curriculum development. Given the scope of the intended course population, we should determine if we want these teams to create hybrid and online offerings upfront. Do we need to survey our classroom space based on the number of sections that would be needed? We also need to determine when students would take this course (first term, within first six credits...), how do we assure they re enroll if they withdraw and what constitutes successful completion (ATD says a C)? Students will explain financial literacy terms such as: budget, debt, interest rates, repayment options, subsidized loan, unsubsidized loan, grant, scholarship, etc. Develop a financial plan to fund their education. Students will develop a plan to improve learning skills. Students will identify college learning support services (including librarians, counselors, advisors, etc). Students will discuss the steps they will take to meet their learning goals in a specific course. Students will apply academic behaviors needed to succeed in college.
