6 contents Universiti Malaya (UM) 08 Established in 1962, UM is a research university and also the oldest university in Malaysia. Its motto is Ilmu Punca Kemajuan (Knowledge is the Key to Success). The main campus which spans 900 acres is located in the suburb of Lembah Pantai, southwest of Kuala Lumpur. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) 12 Established in 1969, Universiti Sains Malaysia currently has three campuses in Peninsular Malaysia. The Main Campus is located on the island of Penang whereas its Engineering Campus is located on the mainland of Penang,,and the Health Campus in Kelantan. Officially chosen as the first university to be conferred the APEX status by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, USM is poised to deliver the highest quality of education for local and international students. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) 21 Established in 1970, UKM is located in Bangi, near Kuala Lumpur. It is endorsed as one of four research universities by the Ministry of Higher Education and is globally recognised. The university has set up numerous research institutes to accelerate research in new areas. UKM is dedicated in providing the best service with high quality educational programmes. Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) 29 Universiti Putra Malaysia was established in 1971 and was declared one of four research universities in the country by the Ministry of Higher Education. UPM is renowned as a multidisciplinary institution that offers globally recognised, high quality educational programmes. Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) 38 Established in 1975, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia offers excellent academic programmes especially in the areas of science, engineering and technology. As at March 2009, UTM had produced more than 200,000 graduates in various fields of study. In addition, UTM s centres of excellence have contributed substantially towards research and development and the commercialisation of new technologies in Malaysia. Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) 42 Established in 1999, UiTM is located in Shah Alam, near Kuala Lumpur and KLIA airport. UiTM is shaped by a history of interaction with industry and international partners and strives to be an international competitive, research-intensive institution. It also prides itself in the core values of pursuing scholarship and developing the minds of its students to become leaders, thinkers and creators. International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) 46 Established in 1983, the International Islamic University Malaysia is a public university in Malaysia offering courses based on Islamic principles collectively called Islamization of Knowledge, and seeks to promote the Islamic concept of unified education, providing an alternative to modern secular education that separates physical realities from the spiritual. The university s language of instruction is English and Arabic. Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) 51 Established in 1984, Universiti Utara Malaysia has a huge, beautifully landscaped campus surrounded by tropical rainforests in the state of Kedah. The university has modern infrastructure and is can be accessed from the state airport, and rail and bus stations. The university has made significant inroads in the field of IT and quality management. Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) 54 Established in 1992, UNIMAS is an ISO-certified university. Its strong emphasis on technology gained the university the prestigious Multimedia Super Corridor status. 7 contents Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) 58 Since its establishment in 1994, Universiti Malaysia Sabah has brought much academic development to the state of Sabah. UMS strives to achieve academic excellence in various fields such as tropical biology, and marine and biotechnology research by gaining international recognition. Through learning and teaching, research and publications, social services and a balanced specialisation of knowledge, it aims to produce high productivity and quality in the context of the society and the nation. Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) 63 Established in 1997, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris is the first university of education in the country and emphasises on producing leaders through education-based courses. UPSI is located at the border of Perak and Selangor in Tanjong Malim. Its new campus will be built on an 800-acre piece of land located in Behrang, Ulu, 5km from the current campus. Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) 68 Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia was established in 1998 and aims to uphold and enhance Islamic studies; bring Islamic Studies into the national main education stream; and emphasise the use of information technology in education and research systems. USIM also focuses on mastering Arabic and English as well as the national language. At present, USIM has eight faculties with 18 academic programmes. Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) 70 Established in 1999, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu is located in Mengabang Telipot, Kuala Terengganu. Its strategic location along the coast of the South China Sea makes UMT an ideal maritime university. UMT offers a broad spectrum of programmes both in the sciences and social sciences. Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) 74 Established in 2000, UTHM is located in Johor and is an hour s drive from Singapore. The mission of the university is to produce and train competitive professionals and technologists of high ethical values in the global arena through holistic academic programmes, and a knowledge and research culture based on the concept of Tauhid. The university offers postgraduate courses in engineering, TVET education, technology, management and information technology. Universiti Teknikal Malaysia (UTeM) 77 Established in 2000, the university is a pioneer in the use of the Practice and Application Oriented teaching and learning method for technical education in Malaysia. In line with the government s aim to fulfill the human resource needs of Malaysia s industries, UTeM s programmes are tailored with input from various industries in order to create graduates that match the demands of the industry. Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) 79 Established in 2002, UMP offers a wide range of practical-based higher education programmes in engineering and technology to produce competent engineers. UMP focuses on applied research and industrial projects to enrich the teaching and learning processes. It also promotes the commercialisation of research products, thus exposing its students to the latest research and development activities in various industries. Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) 81 Established in 2002, UniMAP is located at the northernmost part of the Malaysian peninsula, less than 35km from the border of Thailand. Its location opens up many opportunities for regional and international collaboration initiatives, not just in the academia, but also in other related fields such as sports, culture, and edu-tourism. Universiti Darul Iman Malaysia (UDM) 83 Established in 2006, UDM is located in the east coast state of Terengganu in Peninsular Malaysia. The university offers programmes in Islamic studies encompassing all aspects of Islamic life thought, knowledge, jurisprudence, economics, culture, history and civilisation besides courses on languages, law, management, computer science, technology, biotechnology, food sciences, and medical and health sciences. Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) 85 Established in 2006, UMK is located in Kelantan on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
