1 June 10, 2008 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE UT/MCCC PARTNERSHIP BRINGS DOCTORAL PROGRAM TO CAMPUS MONROE, Mich. A doctoral program is coming to the Monroe County Community College campus through a partnership between the college and the University of Toledo. A cohort of the UT College of Graduate Studies doctoral program in higher education will meet weekly beginning this fall at the college s La-Z-Boy Center. Of the 25 students accepted to participate in the cohort, nine are MCCC employees. The doctoral program prepares graduates to become leaders who will shape the future of American public and private higher education, with a specific focus on administration and policy analysis. This collaboration between MCCC and UT represents our commitment to the value of higher education and advancing quality, said MCCC President Dr. David Nixon. We are honored to partner with [MCCC], said Dr. Ron Opp, higher education program coordinator at UT. This cohort is the most diverse, eclectic group of doctoral candidates we have ever assembled. Thanks [to MCCC] for allowing us to use [its] first-rate facilities and for promoting doctoral education. I believe the region will be greater for our collective efforts. The MCCC employees who will participate in the cohort include: Margie Bacarella, adjunct political science instructor; Parmeshwar (Peter) Coomar, dean of the Industrial Technology Division; Randy Daniels, vice president of student and information systems; Anthony Quinn, director of Upward Bound; Jeff Peters, coordinator for teaching and learning; Kathy Shepherd, associate professor of mathematics; Kristy Taylor, adjunct instructor of business; Jim Vallade, assistant professor of mathematics; and Patrick Wise, assistant professor of psychology.
2 From: To: Date: Subject: DAVID NIXON 1-ALL GroupWise Users 4/8/2008 4:17:29 PM Doctorate Offered On Campus Congratulations are in order for colleagues who were among the first to be accepted into the University of Toledo's Ph.D. program which will be delivered on the MCCC campus beginning this fall. Those of you who already hold doctorates will appreciate the value of a Ph.D. program in Higher Education Leadership that does not require weekly commutes to classrooms at a distant campus where parking is scarce. This cohort group will meet evenings (weekly) in classrooms at the La-Z-Boy Center. Reportedly, more than 40 persons applied. Two weeks ago the applicants sat for interviews at the UT campus in Toledo. UT's Dr. Ron Opp said 30 were selected. The first orientation course will be offered this summer. The MCCC cohort includes nine (9) of our colleagues. They include: Margie Bacarella, Peter Coomar, Randy Daniels, Tony Quinn, Jeffery Peters, Kathy Shepherd, Kristy Taylor, Jim Vallade, and Patrick Wise. A willingness to embark on this journey and to commit to the rigor of the work has been pledged by each applicant. The successful completion of the program will be a significant accomplishment for them personally of course--but their enthusiasm for learning will be shared with the rest of us as they make their way down that path. In HLC PEAQ terms, it could be argued their efforts will contribute to "advancing quality" at MCCC well into the future. And now, for the candidates, the work begins :-) all of us. Sincerely--best wishes from
