It was directed by Philip E. Mosely, with Alexander Dallin and Robert Slusser as Associate Directors. Many of the manuscripts deal with World War II and the post-war period. Other works concern the following areas: (l) religious persecution and anti-religious propaganda; (2) the history of the Communist Party and the Komsomol; (3) industrial development; W agriculture, forestation and natural resources; (5) Soviet science and technical institutes; (6) the literature and history of national minorities; (7) theater, music and film industries; (8) Russian literature; (9) geology, zoology, mining, biology, chemistry, genetics; (10) urban construction and housing.
