Dissertation Chair: Jennifer Pinto-Martin, PhD, MPH Current Research Support A Naturalistic Investigation of Brain Neuroplasticity in Children Born Preterm Robert Wood Johnson Nurse Faculty Scholar, $350,000 The aim is to examine prematurity and children s linguistic environment, exploring the possibility that bilingualism can be advantageous to children born premature. In this study, we will explore the differences in the physiological indicators of brain activity during tests of EF in preterm children. We are seeking to establish that children born prematurely demonstrate neuroplasticity in response to bilingualism as a daily environmental challenge to the centers of EF. We will complement a current, ongoing investigation that uses traditional cognitive tests to compare the EF of preterm children raised in monolingual versus bilingual environments, by examining EF using innovative, cutting edge imaging technology and data analyses. For the proposed project we will use functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fnirs), a non-invasive, non-threatening use of weak beams of light to map parts of the brain that are activated while preterm monolingual and bilingual children perform cognitive tasks. Bilingualism and Cognitive Development in Preterm Infants Kranys Innovation Fund, $100,000 over 2 years This proposed study will be the first to bring together the lines of research on preterm children s cognitive and academic trajectories, and the cognitive benefits of bilingualism for preterm Hispanic children in the United States. The researchers hypothesize that the effects of bilingualism may reduce the cognitive deficits that are

This study will inform the design of future research around early bilingual educational that may improve academic success in these preterm Hispanic children. Talk with Me Baby United Way of Greater Atlanta, $1.5 million over 3 years, CO-I Role: Co-I Talk With Me Baby is a novel project concept that has the unique ability to improve the health and well-being of all babies, especially those at risk of language delay. Early exposure to quality and quantity of language spoken by parents and caregivers to the baby has a strong impact on vocabulary development by age three which is, in turn, a key predictor of reading comprehension by the end of third grade. The goal of Talk With Me Baby is to increase early exposure to language as a strategy to ensure better outcomes for children including higher reading proficiency by the end of third grade. In order to achieve this goal, the Talk With Me Baby Collaborative will: (1) increase public awareness of the primacy of language; (2) train nurses to (a)understand the importance of language nutrition, (b) model talking to the baby in utero and as an infant, (c) encourage the parents to join in talking with the baby, and (d) use the nurses to provide an example of language nutrition as a replicable and resilient habit of parents of infants, and (3) provide support and modeling for a parental habit of providing culturally sensitive language nutrition to all infants and toddlers in their home language, which will have a lasting effect on children s ability to communicate, learn and read on grade level. Past Research Support Children s Healthcare of Atlanta: Dudley Moore Foundation Timing of Autism Diagnosis across Gestational Ages: A Comparison of Term and Preterm Children $15,000 - November 1, 2012 October 31, 2013 Despite our increasing ability to identify early signs of diagnosis, on average many children with ASD do not received a diagnosis until school age. This study will build upon research that has examined factors that may delay or expedite the diagnosis of ASD. The purpose of this study is to examine the question of whether the average age of diagnosis among preterm infants is different than that of full term infants. Children s Healthcare of Atlanta: Allen Nursing Research Fund A Pilot Analysis of Late-Prematurity and Birth History in Children with Autism $25,000 - October 1 st, 2011-October 31 st, 2012 Explore the variation in gestational age among children with Autism Spectrum Diagnoses and/or positive ASD screening tests and estimate the relative probability of ASD among late preterm infants compared with early preterm and full term children.
