2 Note for the reader: This inventory was made as a part of the IWT/HOBU research project Multifunctional embedded digital camera system. It was not the authors intention to provide the reader with detailed information about all the embedded systems for image processing, for that would be an enormous task to fulfil. This inventory was meant to be an indicative list of manufacturers that are active in the field of embedded image processing. This document was composed by a search on the World Wide Web. Therefore, the authors are not responsible for changes in the information about certain products or for changes on the different websites. However if you notice significant changes that compel this inventory to be changed, please contact one of the authors and the inventory will be updated as soon as possible. 4 AKAtech imvs Series This intelligent camera is used for high-speed image transmission and limited on-board processing. Typical applications include industrial inspection, traffic monitoring, The system has no CPU incorporated. All the processing is done by a DSP with just a limited amount of memory The heart is a DSP (ADI ) running at 40 MHz. It has 4.5 MB SRAM on-board as well as 2 MB Flash. This system is equipped with a 1024x1024 CMOS-sensor and can acquire images at 10 Mpixel/second. To communicate with the outside world, there is an ability to use RS232, RS485 or CameraLink. N/A

5 Allied Vision Technologies Dolphin Series This intelligent camera is mostly used in factory automation tasks. The internal logic has only limited capabilities. There is no CPU or DSP. System Architecture: The Dolphin has a SXGA color CCD sensor with onboard color conversion and correction. Its 16 internal frame buffers are used to decouple frame grabbing and frame transmission. Up to 63 programmable LUTs can be used for small preprocessing tasks. The system can achieve frame rates up to 15 fps. N/A Extra:

6 Allied Vision Technologies Product name: Marlin Series This intelligent camera is used for image processing and factory automation. Restricted functionality of the internal logic. This system has a CCD colour camera equipped with some programmable logic for high quality color correction. It contains 13 internal frame buffers (FIFO) and some of the in- and outputs are programmable. This camera can produce a higher frame rate than the Dolphin series (51 fps). Unknown Extra:

7 Analogic Computers Product name: Bi-i The Bi-i is a bio-inspired, real-time, very high speed, stand-alone image processing system This system has an ACE16k_v2 chip as sensor. This is a special sensor, similar in architecture to the human retina. It operates in cooperation with a 1.3 Mpixel CMOS sensor. The image processing is done by a TI DSP (TMS320C6202). 8 Axis Axis 2420 This embedded network camera is used in surveillance applications. The system has a limited embedded functionality, but still requires a workstation or PC to do most of the image processing. The embedded processor (ETRAX100LX) in the camera can take care of the image compression and transfer via Ethernet. The system has 16MB RAM and 4MB Flash on board. The camera itself can be event-triggered for generating alarms. N/A

9 Bluetechnix Tinyphoon Very small intelligent platform for image processing The core of this system is an Analog Devices DSP, Blackfin 561. This dual-core DSP takes care of several image processing tasks. I/O includes UART, Serial, Parallel, The system has 4MB FLASH and 32MB SDRAM. It can handle two CMOS sensors N/A

14 Elphel Model 313 Network camera (Ethernet), running an OS Open source project (GNU GPL): modification of the camera is possible through the internal website, C programs, drivers and an FPGA. 16 Eltec Mini HiPerCam Smart imaging system with camera module. The system has a CMOS sensor (colour or BW) with an internal CPU. The CPU used is a Motorola PowerPC 823 and runs Windows CE or Linux. Networking is done by Ethernet or Serial Ports. The memory is 8MB Flash and 16 MB SDRAM. N/A

17 Eltec HiPerCam_1 Intelligent camera with integrated image processing. This system is built around a IBM PowerPC403. It has a CCD sensor and on-board ADC and DAC for the in- and output. The camera is equipped with FLASH and DRAM and provides numerous I/O functionalities. N/A

18 Eltec HiPerCam_2 Intelligent camera with a powerful CPU. No actual sensor present on the system. Works as an intelligent framegrabber. The camera places a Celeron or a Pentium III processor next to the external camera heads. The system supports numerous I/O standards. (USB, Ethernet, ) N/A

22 Futuretel Digital Imaging FDI SmartCam This system is optimised for security applications. It has a built-in processor to take care of the MPEG-compression. In a box, directly connected to the camera is a built-in CPU (300 MIPS), with a hard disk of 120 GB. On this platform runs embedded Linux. Extra:

23 Image Solutions Group MHPAS-1300 FireWire Smart Digital Imaging Module This system is used for machine vision and inspection applications. This system has no processor on-board. The FPGA is partially reconfigurable but this is limited. The camera system has an FPGA that takes care of the controlling and of the image processing algorithm. The data resolution is 10bit AD. 24 Image Solutions Group LightWise Series This Megapixel Area Camera is used for inspection, surveillance, medical imaging, This system has no processor on-board. The FPGA is partially reconfigurable but this is limited. The camera system has a 1.3 Mpixel CMOS image sensor and an FPGA that takes care of the image processing algorithm. The data resolution is 10bit AD. As IO-interface there is a FireWire interface. N/A

25 IQinvision Iqeye3 Intelligent network camera. No reconfigurability. Embedded intelligence only used for networking CMOS digital imager extended with a small processor to ensure communication over the internet. N/A

26 JAI Pulnix ZiCAM This smartcam is typically designed for machine vision applications. The system does not have a CPU. The algorithms are processed by neural-network hardware. A 640x480 sensor (CCD or CMOS) is interfaced with the neural-network hardware, configured in an FPGA. The results of the calculations can be stored on compact flash(128mb) or transferred out by a serial or an Ethernet-link. N/A

30 Mobotix Mobotix M1 Camera This is a high quality network camera with a large amount of possible applications. This system does not allow personal reconfiguration. The camera has to be used as it is, with no room for additional soft- or hardware. The system has a 640x480 Colour CMOS sensor on board. The CPU to control the system is a INTEL StrongARM, running uclinux. It has 64MB SDRAM and 8MB Flash. To connect to the Internet, there is an Ethernet connection and ISDN connectivity. The system is also equipped with optical links. The memory control and glue logic are programmed in a Spartan FPGA from Xilinx. It is possible to have a weather-resistant system. 31 National Instruments Compact Vision System Industrial imaging. Closed source, D-CAM Firewire interface only. This rugged system runs a real time operating system on an embedded Intel Celeron processor. It has 128Mb of DRAM and 32Mb non volatile storage on board. Programming the imaging application goes via the Ethernet connection. Labview is the programming environment. Up to three camera s can be connected or up to 16 if a firewire hub is used. Maximum acquisition is 30 frames per second at VGA resolution. That s the limit of the firewire bandwidth $3995 for the fastest version. (Celeron 667Mhz) $2995 for the slower version. 32 Philips Product name: INCA 310/311 and 320/321 This is a complete system with an embedded camera with CMOS image sensor (1280x1024 x10bit). It can work as stand alone module without interaction with a PC. The camera is also equipped with different communication standards. Apart from the sensor, the TriMedia processor is the heart of this system. Equipped with a Flash RAM (8Mb) and SDRAM (32Mb). 33 Philips Product name: DICA 121 This system is a smaller variant of the INCA-system, described above. It is particularly interesting for vision applications, requiring only a limited amount of intelligence. When compared to the INCA, this system has limited IO-functionality. The CPU to control the system is a Motorola Coldfire, running uclinux. It has 16MB DRAM and 2MB Flash. To connect to the Internet, there is an Ethernet connection and RS232 Serial ports. $ 599,-

36 Toshiba IK-WB02A This intelligent camera is used in surveillance applications. The system has no reconfigurable element. The sensor(ccd) in the camera can achieve up to 30 fps. It has internal memory, divided in 4MB FLASH and 16MB SDRAM. The heart of the system is a ARM7-core running uclinux. $ 599,-

37 TU Delft MIPS (Modular Image Processing System) Thanks to this platform, there s a possibility to speed up development of a design. It makes use of oversized hardware and software capabilities. This way you don t have the constraints of a real product in size or power. Testing of an application can be done via real time performance. Changes to the algorithm can be done more quickly. After the development of the algorithm on this platform and the proof of concept, one can go on with the development of a cost effective product. Complex system with different bus types to control the pipeline. It has analogue in/outputs. Use of PLD s instead of FPGA s. 38 Vision Components GmbH Product name: VC- series According to the manufacturer, this intelligent camera is the fastest in the world. It has and inhouse multitasking operating system on board. The camera can be administrated without interruption of the acquisition tasks. Possibility to interface the camera with a PLC. Closed system: the operation system has a license. The O/S can only be used to administrate the camera, change settings and so forth. Programming the DSP algorithms needs an extra toolkit delivered with the camera. Has slow interfaces.
