13 Telephone: UPC master degrees are official postgraduate courses that offer advanced specialised or multidisciplinary training. They are aimed at providing research skills and professional competence and also act as a gateway to doctoral programmes. Their quality is guaranteed internationally, and their curricula, faculty and services are assessed by the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency, a member of the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA), before being approved by the Spanish government. All of the master degrees require students to complete from 60 to 120 ECTS credits. One ECTS credit is equivalent to hours of study, and a full-time student can earn up to 60 ECTS credits in one academic year. They are taught by UPC lecturers and researchers, and by guest lecturers on programmes in which other universities participate, and lie within the framework of the European Union s Erasmus Mundus programme. UPC is the European university with the highest number of Erasmus Mundus master degrees. Requirements These courses of study are open to holders of an official Spanish university degree or to holders of an official university degree that was awarded by a university in the European Higher Education Area and that gives access to a master degree in the country in which it was awarded. Master degrees are also open to holders of a university degree awarded by a university in a country that is not part of the European Higher Education Area if the degree has been officially recognised as equivalent to a Spanish qualification that gives access to a master degree. If the applicant s degree has not been recognised officially, the University must first verify that the course of study corresponds to a level of education equivalent to an official Spanish university degree and that the qualification obtained would give access to a master degree in the country in which it was awarded. Admission following this procedure under no circumstances implies the official recognition of the degree or its acceptance for any purpose other than admission to the master degree. If the student successfully completes the master degree, the qualification obtained will be officially valid. In addition to these general university entrance requirements, which apply to all master degree courses, each programme may also have its own specific admission requirements. REGISTRATION To enrol for a master degree taught at UPC or an interuniversity master degree coordinated by UPC, go to the master degree pre-enrolment page: preregistration If the master degree you wish to enrol for is an interuniversity master degree coordinated by another university, you must enrol at the coordinating university. CALENDAR The pre-enrolment period for UPC master degrees is established in the academic calendar. Within this general period, each master degree may have its own schedule. Please consult our website. Autumn semester Pre-enrolment: from March to June Spring semester Pre-enrolment: from October to December tuition fees, scholarships and financial aid The cost of the credit ranges from 40 to 64 euros for ECTS credit. For nonresident foreign students who are not EU nationals, the fee is 1.5 times the amount stated. A full time yearly course has 60 ECTS credits. Erasmus Mundus Master courses have special fees. For further information, visit our website at masters-degrees-courses or contact us at [email protected]. The Institutional Relations and Internationalization Office establishes institutional relations with scholarshipfunding bodies with the aim of facilitating our future international students access to scholarships. Visit our website for further information: international-students/helps-andgrants-for-coming-to-upc. UPC offers students the chance to work in departments and administrative services. * Erasmus Mundus is a higher education cooperation and mobility programme launched by the European Union. Its main goal is to attract highly qualified students by granting a substantial number of scholarships to students from countries not belonging to the European Union. An Erasmus Mundus master degree is a top-quality course backed by the European Union and offered by a joint consortium of at least three European universities. This guarantees student mobility. 13

18 Master in advanced mathemathics and mathematical engineering (MAMME) Contact: Antonio Rodríguez Ferran Telephone: As reflected in its name, this master degree has a dual academic and professional orientation. On the academic side, it provides the skills and techniques needed for scientific research in general and, more specifically, mathematical research. On the professional side, it provides an advanced background for working in interdisciplinary teams in cooperation with engineers, physicists, biologists and economists. The master degree benefits both from the leading role of Spanish mathematical research at the European level and the technological environment of a technical university such as UPC. Structure The master degree comprises taught courses (45 ECTS credits) and a master s thesis (15 ECTS credits). Courses are offered in five broad fields: Algebra and Geometry, Discrete Mathematics and Algorithms, Modelling in Engineering and Biomedical Sciences, Differential Equations and Scientific Computing. In addition, up to half of the course credits (i.e ECTS credits) may be taken from other master degree courses. This offers an excellent opportunity for specialisation in a given field according to students particular interests. Specific requirements The master degree is addressed to students with good abstract reasoning, an interest in problem solving, strong work habits and a liking for mathematics. A scientific background and a good grasp of basic mathematics are required. Thus, a bachelor s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Engineering, Economics or Science is recommended, although this list is not exclusive, because all applications are reviewed on an individual basis. Career prospects Some of the career prospects of master degree graduates are academic research (the pursuit of a doctoral degree in mathematics, science or engineering, for instance), mathematical modelling, finance, statistics and applied research (biomedical research centres, computer vision, etc.). Credits: 60 ECTS (2 semesters) 18

Bachelor s degrees in other fields such as Biology or Chemistry may also be accepted. Career prospects For many business people, photonics is to the 21st century what electronics was to the 20th century. At present, there is a recognised deficiency in manpower both for researchrelated posts and for industrial jobs in photonics-related technologies. In addition, the creation of small techbased spin-off companies in the area is requiring more and more specialised professionals. Students will be in touch with all the photonics-related research groups working in the area in fields ranging from Quantum Optics to Optical Engineering, and may eventually go on to pursue a doctoral degree with one of these groups. Credits: 60 ECTS (2 semesters) 19

The forecast on the increase in demand for qualified personnel has generated a shared uneasiness among not only Spanish companies but also the regulatory authority known as the Consejo de Seguridad Nuclear (Nuclear Security Counsel). This Master programme focuses not only on training professionals to be highly prepared to reach positions of responsibility within the nuclear power sector but also to prepare qualified personnel for research and development and even lecturing, in this field. teaching methodology The courses will be developed by combining theoretical and practice based activities (demonstration classes, self-guided studies, using computational codes and laboratory practice) with guided visits to different nuclear facilities. An important part of the learning process for students will be combined problem solving via Project Based Learning (PBL), working mostly in small cooperative groups. * New master degree introduced in the 2012/2013 academic year. Degree pending approval by the Spanish Universities Council. Credits: 90 ECTS (3 semesters) 31
