Bandow s efforts were part of the Florida Association for Women Lawyers (FAWL) Lobby Days in Tallahassee, Florida. The annual event, organized by FAWL, provided an opportunity for its members to educate state legislators on important issues. Human trafficking is especially problematic in Tampa. Although we re making strides in helping victims, there remains a long way to go. In addition to her lobbying time, Bandow attended several events with FAWL members and leadership from across the state of Florida, including a tour of the Florida Supreme Court and a continuing legal education seminar about the Florida Legislature. Ameen to Teach Florida Drunk Driving Practice at WMU-Cooley Law School s Tampa Campus Mustafa Ameen, of the Law Office of Ameen & Shafii, will join the teaching ranks at Western Michigan University (WMU) Thomas M. Ameen brings a wealth of experience in Florida drunk driving practice. A former Assistant State Attorney, Ameen has prosecuted or defended more than 100 Driving Under the Influence (DUI) cases. With Hillsborough County holding the highest DUI conviction rate in the state, Ameen s experience is exactly what WMU-Cooley looks for in an adjunct professor, said Jeffrey Martlew, associate dean of the WMU-Cooley Law School s Tampa Bay campus. We are pleased to welcome Mr. Ameen to our adjunct faculty, Martlew said. WMU-Cooley prides itself on offering students a practical education taught by leading practitioners. With the addition of Mr. Ameen, we continue to provide our students with a depth of knowledge and real world experience from which to learn. Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion to Perform in Tampa WHO: WHAT: WHEN: WHERE: Straz Center for the Performing Arts Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion Monday, May 11, at 7:30 p.m. Jaeb Theater at the Straz Center Sarah Lee Guthrie and her husband Johnny Irion have been singing together for 13 years and recording for eight. In that time, they ve released three studio albums that highlight their folksy harmonies and acoustic-based sound. They ve often bristled against the strictures of the roots scene, and the duo have indulged their taste for unabashedly pop hooks and moody soundscapes. Guthrie is the youngest daughter of folksinger Arlo Guthrie and the granddaughter of Woody Guthrie. Irion originates from a family of artists - his uncle is author Thomas Steinbaeck, his great uncle is author John Steinbeck and his grandmother, Rubilee Knight, is a classical violinist. The duo have Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion recently recorded an album produced by Wilco s Jeff Tweedy and Patrick Sansone titled Wassaic Way. This concert replaces the previously announced Club Jaeb performance by Natalie Prass who, due to a scheduling conflict, is unable to perform. Regularly priced tickets are $28.50 and may be purchased by calling STAR (7827) or outside Tampa Bay, in person at the Straz Center Ticket Office or online at MAMMA MIA! Sponsored by Duke Energy, Sea Turtle Awareness Day aims to educate people about the importance of lighting, keeping the beaches clean and protecting this endangered species. Other sponsors include the City of Clearwater, Florida Wildlife Alliance, Keep Pinellas Beautiful, and Ocean Conservancy. Participants are requested to bring a refillable water bottle, insect and sunburn repellant, and wear closed toed shoes. Bags, gloves and pickers will be provided. That s a very hard line to walk and this play handles it with an unbelievable deft touch notes co-director David M. Jenkins. Annapurna s world premiere took place at The Magic Theatre in San Francisco in 2011, and ran in New York last April starring reallife married couple Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman. The Huffington Post said of the production, Sharr White has created two fine and ferociously damaged people caught in the emotional whirlpool of not being able to live with or without each other. WOLFE Facility for Outdoor Experimental Research and Training A public meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, at the University of Florida Gulf Coast Research and Education Center to discuss a proposed program between the University of South Florida (USF) and the Hillsborough County Sheriff s Office (HCSO). The program, called the Facility for Outdoor Experimental Research and Training (FORT), will provide a unique research and training opportunity in applied forensic sciences. It would be located in Hillsborough County, though it will serve as a critical resource for the medical and legal communities throughout Florida. The proposed outdoor research facility would sit on two acres of County-owned and HCSO-controlled land located at the Walter C. Heinrich Practical Training Center at S. County Road 39 in Lithia, and would utilize USF s After Life Body Donation Program for research in forensic anthropology and legal medicine. Information about the program and proposed facility will be provided during the meeting and attendees will have an opportunity to review and comment on the proposed plan with USF, HCSO, and Hillsborough County representatives. DATE: Thursday, April 23 TIME: 6:30 p.m. PLACE: University of Florida Gulf Coast Research and Education Center County Road 672 in Wimauma All meeting facilities are accessible in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Additional necessary accommodations will be provided with a 48-hour notice. To provide training in outdoor crime scene methods involving human victims. To document and study postmortem change in human remains. The forensic and scientific research conducted at the FORT would include performing simulated case studies for the medical and legal community, allowing graduate students to conduct independent studies relating to their research and offering advanced training to law enforcement throughout the state on how to process outdoor crime scenes involving human victims. New discoveries would be shared with other scientists and professionals in the field through educational programs, scientific presentations and peer-reviewed publications. Eventually the donated remains will be housed in a permanent skeletal collection at USF, which is available to visiting researchers. The identification of unknown and missing persons is critical to the families of the missing and the community. In the Tampa Bay region alone there are more than 400 cases of unknown persons handled annually through the Medical Examiner s Departments, with about 80 cases of those cases going unsolved. This type of science has transformed crime solving and is now the catalyst for providing critical evidence in the pursuit of finding and prosecuting those responsible for violent crimes. Programs like FORT are currently operating in many states around the country, including Colorado, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Tennessee and Texas. patel conservatory The Patel Conservatory at the David A.
