We address the problems of affordable housing for low-income homeowners and their families by revitalizing and preserving their homes in the seven-county metropolitan area. Through the repairs provided by our volunteers, we: Maintain low-income, owner-occupied housing, enabling the elderly, the disabled, and families with children to remain in their homes for years to come in safety, comfort and independence. Address safety issues falls are a leading cause of injury among seniors. Stabilize living conditions, allowing children to concentrate on learning. Lower household energy bills by weatherizing homes and replacing old appliances with newer, energy efficient models, allowing families to concentrate their resources on other needs. An affiliate of the national Rebuilding Together organization, Rebuilding Together Greater Dallas has been preserving and revitalizing homes and communities in the metropolitan area since Programs provide opportunities for community involvement and support for community volunteers. Through sponsors and volunteer efforts, we strive to have an impact on communities and the non-profit places where neighborhood members gather. 4 Rebuilding Together Greater Dallas Sponsorship & Group Volunteer Opportunities

5 Is my contribution tax-deductible? Yes. All contributions are tax-deductible. All funds raised in the Dallas area support projects in Dallas County Financial Support Make a secure donation online at: Or mail in your tax-deductible check to: Rebuilding Together Greater Dallas P.O. Box Dallas TX Building Materials & Tools New and used building materials, supplies, usable home fixtures, and tools are always needed. Neil Bubel [email protected] or call our office at Why are these services needed? The number of low-income homeowners increases each year. Currently, 6 million lowincome homeowner families live with broken heating and plumbing holes in walls and windows, roach and rodent infestation, falling plaster, crumbling foundations and leaking roofs (Rebuilding Together National Impact Statement). According to the 2009 U. S. Census Bureau Population estimates, the number of persons 60+ in Dallas County is 304,519. Population projections provided by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services estimate a 19.5 percent increase in this group, bringing the total to 364,095 in According to the 2011 Census, there are more than 32,000 seniors living below the poverty line in Dallas County. It becomes increasingly difficult to maintain one s home as taxes increase and property values fall, or when income is fixed or lost. Those hardest hit are the elderly, the disabled and families with children. More and more families are placed in the position of choosing between vital necessities, such as food or medicine, or a roof that doesn t leak. Rebuilding Together Greater Dallas works to ensure that as many of those families as possible do not have to make these difficult choices. What type of work is done? Volunteers join with a leadership team and skilled trades people to rehab a home. Examples of typical projects include: Safety and Accessibility Modifications installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, outdoor security lights, grab bars, shower seats, higher toilets, stair rails, lever door handles, no-slip stair treads, handicapped ramps, eliminating trip and fall hazards, and others. General Repair & Maintenance electrical and plumbing upgrades, wall repair, roof repair, landscaping to divert water from home or prevent erosion, work orders issued by city or county housing inspections, and additional repairs as needed. Weatherization & Energy/Environmental-Efficiency installing insulation, caulking, re-glazing or replacing windows, replacing appliances with Energy Star-rated models, installing low-flow water faucets and toilets, to name a few. Who sponsors Rebuilding Together? Funds come from generous individuals, corporations, labor organizations, foundations, civic organizations, and faithbased organizations that are interested in helping to build a better world. As a local affiliate of Rebuilding Together, Inc., Rebuilding Together Greater Dallas does its own fundraising, publicity, volunteer recruitment, and management. All funds raised support residents of Dallas County Rebuilding Together, Inc. and Rebuilding Together Greater Dallas is non-profit, non-sectarian organizations supported by voluntary contributions of time and money. Every dollar given is wisely spent and is an investment in building a better America. Who do I contact about sponsorship or group opportunities? Please contact Magdalena Brodnax at or [email protected] Sponsorship & Group Volunteer Opportunities Rebuilding Together Greater Dallas 7
6 Our Mission Bringing volunteers and communities together to improve the homes and lives of homeowners in need. By doing this we work to preserve and revitalize houses and communities, assuring that low-income homeowners particularly the elderly and disabled, and families with children live in warmth, safety, and independence. How are projects selected? Projects are selected through an application process. Applications can be obtained from our website ( or by calling , as well as from neighborhood councils, community development corporations and local social services agencies also aid in qualifying clients. Completed applications are submitted to Rebuilding Together Greater Dallas, where they are screened. Once minimum qualifications are verified with a telephone interview, site visits are conducted by a team of staff and trained volunteers. Qualified projects are matched with volunteer teams as funding allows. Homeowner Qualifications Be elderly (62 or older), disabled (documented), and/or a family with dependent children. Be living on a very low income according to HUD guidelines. Own the home and live in the house (single family dwelling in Dallas County). Be current with real estate taxes or have an agreement with DCAD for all delinquent real estate taxes. Nonprofit Facility Qualifications Applicant must own the building for which they are applying or have a longterm lease with permission from landlord for volunteer-delivered repairs. Applicant must be a qualified 501 (c)(3) as determined by the IRS Applicant must be current on taxes (if applicable) Applicant must serve the low-income community by providing housing, educational or social services, or provide a community gathering place. Do homeowners pay? All repairs are completed at no charge to the homeowners. Labor and many supplies are donated. Homeowners and family members are asked to welcome the volunteers into their homes and work alongside them to the extent they are able. Our work is done hand in hand with families and neighborhoods, and is a hand up not a hand out. How Can I Help? Individuals and groups can volunteer in the following capacities: Skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled volunteers are needed to provide home repair services throughout the year. Licensed contractors are needed to provide emergency home repairs. Materials are supplied by RTGD, but we need your time and talents. Volunteers are needed to serve on program/governance committees or behind-the-scenes activities such as volunteer registration, food services and office support. Individuals can logon to RTGD website and click on the volunteer button at the top of the home page. Groups wishing to sponsor a project, please contact Magdalena Brodnax at Community groups who cannot provide funding will be considered on a case-by-case basis and should contact the Volunteer Coordinator, John Hartigan at [email protected] 8 Rebuilding Together Greater Dallas Sponsorship & Group Volunteer Opportunities
