All waivers or petitions must be approved by the Dean s Office. ADVISING GUIDELINES The Suggested Course Progression lays out all courses in order so that prerequisites sequentially are met. Deviating from this course may delay graduation. Joint MBA/MA IEP degree students can choose to complete the 1-credit Advanced Language Component by taking 8 credits or more of language courses in a single language plus up to credits of Intercultural Communication coursework. For example, students can take 8 credits of Russian courses and credits of ICC courses, or can take 10 credits of Arabic courses and credits of ICC courses, or 1 credits of French courses. You need to meet the minimum proficiency requirement in the language (00- level for Spanish and Arabic, 300-level for all the other languages), demonstrated by the placement test taken in the semester when the students plan to take language courses. Please note that ICC courses will be more available starting in Fall 013. It is

2 important for students to work closely with the Language Studies Advisor and their Academic Advisor to determine optimal study plan to meet the language requirements. Joint MBA/MAIEP students are required to complete 6 credits of Functional Sequence courses. These courses may be spread over the semesters, keeping in mind prerequisites and availability. Students will be billed five full-time comprehensive fees for the program. Students that exceed five terms, or 80 credits, will be billed at the per credit rate for overloads. Up to 5 credits of the total degree requirements may be taken as directed study. Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA is required to be considered to be making satisfactory academic progress and to graduate. FUNCTIONAL SEQUENCE Functional sequence courses provide analytical skills related to a student s career interests. Students must complete at least 6 credits of approved advanced coursework in one of the following areas: Accounting,, Finance, Marketing, Operations, or Quantitative Analysis. See MBA/IEP Academic Advisor for list of approved courses. ECONOMICS Graduate level economics courses demand prerequisite knowledge of the principles of micro and/or macro-economics. Please check course schedule for specific course prerequisites. IPOL 85 Environmental and Natural Resource, a second year (fall) course, requires microeconomics as a pre-requisite. If you have not completed micro and/or macroeconomics class(es) with a grade of B (3.0) or above in the past three years before classes start you must take action to satisfy the economics prerequisite. Options include taking a basic course in microeconomics and macroeconomics prior to or during your first year at the Monterey Institute; you can do this online, through Monterey Peninsula College, or here on our campus through an intensive short course typically offered in August and January every year (check with the GSIPM front desk for exact dates.) Please note that the intensive short course offered through GSIPM is an additional tuition expense beyond the cost of the regular degree program. Students are strongly encouraged to meet the pre-requisite prior to beginning classes as most students may wish to take advantage of special courses and practicums offered by the Institute during January and to participate in an internship or professional service program during the summer terms. SUGGESTED COURSE OF STUDY Three options are provided for students to proceed through the Joint MBA/MA International Environmental Degree. For students with strong language skills (high 8300-to-800 level competency) they may choose Option 1 and wait to take language courses until the second year of the program. For students with lower language levels (beginner to low-intermediate) it is important for them to start language study earlier in their academic program. It is important for these students to work closely with their Academic Advisor and the Language Studies Advisor to determine the most optimal study plan to reach their requirements. Option or 3 are available for these students depending on which option best suits their language abilities and other academic plans. In some cases a student may be able to take Summer Intensive Language Program, or MIDD Summer Language School in their first summer between academic years, then proceed with language courses in the remaining semesters. This will require careful coordination of study plans with their Academic Advisor and the Language Studies Advisor. This option is not available for non-native speakers of English who must study English as their foreign language.
