3 University of Strathclyde Business School The University of Strathclyde received its royal charter in 1964, but its history goes back to 1796 when it was founded as Anderson s Institution. Its founder, John Anderson, left instructions that a new higher education institution be established as a place of useful learning. This ethos remains true today, underpinning the industrially and commercially relevant research and teaching undertaken throughout the University. Strathclyde is now Scotland s third largest university, and one of the largest in the UK, with a world-wide reputation for its teaching and research. We comprise four faculties Business, Engineering, Science, and Humanities & Social Sciences and have a total student population of around 14,000. Around 2500 students are at postgraduate level, and a high proportion of the student population is aged 21 years or over. Currently, Strathclyde has over 100,000 alumni around the globe. Founded in 1947, Strathclyde Business School (SBS) is one of four faculties forming the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. SBS offers the highest quality business education and management development to undergraduates right through to senior executives. As one of the largest business schools in Europe, with around 200 academic staff and more than 3000 full-time students (undergraduate and postgraduate), Strathclyde Business School s 11 subject departments and specialist units collaborate to provide a dynamic, fully-rounded and varied programme of specialist and cross-disciplinary programmes. SBS is a triple accredited business school: one of only a small percentage worldwide to hold this prestigious status, with full accreditation from the international bodies, AMBA, AACSB and EQUIS. The school has an established reputation for research excellence. Most recently, in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, Strathclyde Business School was rated 7th in the UK for its world leading and internationally excellent research. International in its outlook, SBS has long-standing and established links with partner institutions around the world, including universities in Australia, Canada, Europe, Asia, and the USA. In addition, SBS operates nine international satellite centres in Europe, SE Asia and the Middle East, and has recently established a branch campus in India. Our departments Accounting and Finance; Management; Economics; Management Science; Human Resource Management; Marketing; the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship The Economics Department The Economics Department is one of the largest in the UK. In the most recent research assessment exercise (RAE 2008), 25% of research was rated world leading and 40% internationally excellent. The Economics Department has recently improved its position within the top ten departments in the UK, according to the Sunday Times index, and came top of all departments in non-private universities in the UK in the most recent National Student Survey. Many important energy industries (for example, BP, Res, Powergen) are located in Glasgow. The city is fast becoming a world leader in the development of green energy. This is not just due to the fact that Scotland has 25% of Europe s offshore wind resource and tidal power. Renewable companies, in particular, have invested heavily on the back of Strathclyde University s strong research profi le in energy, the most recent and notable investment being the University s new 89 million Technology & Innovation Centre. 03
4 Overview MSc in GEM The MSc in Global Energy Management is aimed at producing high flying energy professionals. MSc in Global Energy Management (GEM) The global energy system is undergoing a process of rapid change. Escalating demand, constraints on supplies, increasing energy prices, regulatory pressures to reduce carbon emissions, changing demographics and patterns of energy use and supply, mean that industry, economies and societies face complex challenges and uncertainties that could become more extreme in the future. Both government and industry need to be able to understand and adapt to this changing context, managing these transformations where possible, exploiting emerging opportunities, and acting to reduce risk. The changing energy landscape requires professionals with a global knowledge of the complex technical, economic, geopolitical and policy issues facing the global energy system. The MSc in Global Energy Management is aimed at producing high fl ying energy professionals. Students will gain a rigorous analytical training and in-depth real world knowledge of the global energy system in all of its facets encompassing energy supply, demand, and environmental issues such as carbon management - giving them an unrivalled edge in the energy job market. Programme overview The GEM master s degree is offered by the Department of Economics. The degree is specifi cally designed to train the next generation of energy professionals. A 12-month taught Master s degree, GEM combines academic rigour with exposure to industry and other experts, plus handson training in the management of energyrelated issues and problems. Core taught courses are designed around the latest academic research on the issues facing energy managers today. Students also have the opportunity to pursue their own interests through a variety of optional courses drawn from departments across the business school and from the schools of Engineering, Politics, and Law. The curriculum also offers a series of interactive seminars delivered by external energy professionals; fi eld trips; conferences; and a summer internship, ensuring that students are always up to date with the changing realities of the global energy industry. The changing energy landscape requires professionals with a global knowledge of the complex technical, economic, geopolitical and policy issues facing the global energy system.

Global Energy Technologies, Impacts and Implementation 20 credits Building on Global Energy Issues, Industries and Markets, this class considers the technical and policy context surrounding the adoption and deployment of energy technologies worldwide. The class will cover both fossil fuel and low carbon technologies, their fi t to particular circumstances, and the main stages and issues in implementing energy projects. Energy Policy, Politics, Business Structures and Finance 20 credits This class considers the energy policy environment surrounding the adoption and deployment of energy technologies worldwide. It will assess the different energy policy objectives and energy

Different business structures in the energy sector will be examined, as well as how alternative investments are evaluated and different means of raising fi nance. Energy Economics 10 credits This class begins by studying the forces that lead economic agents to both demand and supply energy resources and energy commodities, to transport them to the users, to use them, and to dispose of the residuals. It investigates the roles of alternative market and regulatory structures on these activities, the impacts of such activities and their environmental consequences. The class identifi es criteria required for the economically effi cient provision and use of energy commodities and resources, and reasons why their effi ciencies are rarely achieved. Microeconomics or Macroeconomics 10 credits Microeconomics Microeconomics is concerned with the behaviour of individual consumers and fi rms within the structure of a market, and the implications that their actions and interactions have for market outcomes. The class will look at how consumers make decisions in allocating scarce income to the consumption of different goods and services in the pursuit of maximising their individual welfare, and how fi rms allocate inputs to the process of production. The effects of Government intervention in markets will also be studied at a basic level. Macroeconomics The purpose of this class is to provide students with clear frameworks they can use to understand economic globalisation. The class aims to develop skills, enabling students to understand how policy makers and businesses can react to, cope with, and anticipate changes in, the macroeconomic environment including business cycles, infl ation, commodity price shocks, change in interest rates, taxation, government spending and government debt, exchange rates, and fi nancial markets.... 8 Employment prospects Graduates will be actively sought after by employers in the energy industry and related fields. Employment prospects Energy is the largest and most critical industry in the global economy today. Recent surveys of the energy industry report a growing shortage of properly trained managers worldwide, a situation that is set to worsen when the current generation reaches retirement age over the next few years. Graduates will be actively sought after by employers in the energy industry and related fi elds. With their specialised knowledge and skills, students will be well placed to manage the complex challenges facing the global energy system in the 21st century at the highest levels. The world s energy system is undergoing unprecedented transformations. Those transformations offer major opportunities for talented and ambitious individuals to play an active role in creating and delivering solutions to some of the world s most signifi cant challenges. To meet those challenges Government and industry need confi dent energy managers with new levels of skills and expertise. Strathclyde is one of the world s leading technological universities with strong links at the highest level of government and business. I am delighted we are offering the GEM degree. Aimed specifi cally at training the next generation of energy professionals, GEM is unique in providing students with the technical skills, global perspective and practical experience they will need to manage the complex realities facing the global energy system in the 21st century. I look forward to meeting the GEM students and seeing them progress to positions of real infl uence as policymakers and managers across the energy sector.
