Page 6 INDEX Diocesan News 1-3, 5-12 Viewpoint 4 The Question Corner 16 The diocesan Office of Marriage Ministry is in the process of implementing initiatives that will bring matrimony to the forefront. The parish-centered approach recognizes marriage as a sacrament that comprises the foundation for family life and factors in to a comprehensive picture of vocations. It s a five-year process within the parishes, to strengthen all relationships, said Deacon Dennis Luft, of the diocesan office of Marriage Ministry. At the end of the five years, we can see the encompassing of vocations in the big picture and viewing of marriage as a sacrament. The initiatives will build on the Marriage Ministry s current outreach. Whether it s a single person or a parent with a family, it s all encouraging relationships, said Deacon Luft. Leading up to a plan Bishop Richard Pates asked Deacon Dennis and Sarah Luft to pull together an advisory committee. The committee of 12 couples representing each region of the diocese met in February and was asked to find out what parishes were doing to support marriage ministry. At an April meeting of the board, Bishop Pates gave direction taken from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops pastoral letter Marriage, Love and Life in the Divine Plan issued last November. In the pastoral letter, the U.S. bishops pledged to be a marriage-building church, carrying this out in respective dioceses by working to support marriage-building parishes. The pastoral strategy includes a yearly conference and eight building blocks for parishes: Continued on page 10 Archbishop Zygmunt Zimowski, President of the Pontifical Council for Health Care Workers, was the guest of the Diocese of Des Moines Aug. 30-Sept. 1. He visited Mercy Medical Center and Mercy College of Health Sciences, talking with health care providers, patients, students and others. Archbishop Zimowski reminded people that the human touch and faith are as important to the healing process as the most advanced medical technology. See Bishop s column on page 2. Vamanos Spanish immersion class begins By Lisa Bourne Staff Writer The San Antonio de Padua Spanish immersion program kicked off its first day of school Aug. 25 with 27 students who will be learning primarily in Spanish, and by fifth grade they will be fully bilingual. Asked how he liked school so far, six-year-old Hunter Crauchlow, said, Good. Speaking Spanish is his favorite part, along with playing and going outside, he said. Five-year-old Gabriel Bolanos agreed. I like it, he said. I know way more Spanish than anybody. Teacher Marisol Guerra, who recently relocated from Honduras with her two children to teach in the program, said Continued on page 10 Three churches to pair with three neighboring parishes By Anne Marie Cox Staff Writer Three rural Catholic churches in the Diocese of Des Moines, which have shared a priest in recent years, will pair with three neighboring, larger parishes. There are several benefits, including greater stability for the three parishes, and opportunities to gain access to more pastoral, catechetical and liturgical care and resources while retaining their individual identities as independent parishes. The changes are expected to be phased in by the end of September. The parishes that will be pairing up are as follows: St. Patrick Church near Irish Settlement (77 families) will be paired with St. Joseph Church in Winterset (273 families). Assumption Church in Churchville (79 families), will be paired with St. John the Apostle Church in Norwalk (525 families). Immaculate Conception Church in St. Marys (170 families) will be paired with St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Indianola (510 families). The decision to pair, or yoke, each of three parishes with three nearby parishes comes after a summer of local discussions and visits by Bishop Richard Pates and the Bishop s consultation with the Diocesan Presbyteral Council, members of the diocesan staff and the three neighboring pastors. After examining the pastoral needs Continued on page 6

2 2 The Catholic Mirror, September 17, 2010 Diocesan News In the Heartland with Bishop Pates Vatican officials visit Mercy Medical Center and Mercy College of Health Sciences Archbishop Zygmunt Zimowski, President of the Pontifical Council for Health Care Workers, was the guest of the Diocese of Des Moines Aug. 30 to Sept. 1. He was accompanied by Msgr. Charles Namugera, originally from Uganda, who has served at the Pontifical Council for eight years coordinating relationships with English speaking countries. Healthcare along with education are two ministries that are at the core of the Church s commitment to uphold the life and dignity of the human person. It is typical for the Catholic Church to establish healthcare facilities and schools in its outreach of evangelization which then evolve into established institutions serving the community. The Archbishop and Monsignor were on their way to Omaha for the 25th anniversary of the Pope Paul VI Institute under the leadership of Dr. Thomas W. Hilgers. They were interested in seeing first hand a thriving American hospital operation and an educational institution devoted to preparing healthcare workers with the best scientific and technology information available operated within the framework of Catholic values and tradition. Archbishop Zimowski emphasized the centrality of the patient in healthcare by choosing to visit several in the different units of the hospital. One visit was to a 98 year old woman By Bishop Richard E. Pates experiencing heart failure. She enthusiastically greeted the Archbishop informing him that she had never met a bishop much less an Archbishop before! She further assured him, that if she gets her way, she is determined to live to 100. The second patient of particular note was a six-monthold boy, that is six months from the moment of conception. He was the size of a large Coke bottle and so very tenderly cared for by an attentive nursing staff. The 98-year-old and this tiny individual were tangible examples of how the Church cares for the most vulnerable in our midst including those at both ends of life s spectrum. In his remarks at Mass at Mercy Hospital East, the Archbishop paid tribute to the Sisters of Mercy who established the original hospital in Des Moines in Their mission was one of compassion bringing the healing ministry of Jesus to the suffering and sick. Their modest beginnings have developed into 12 different institutionalized operations embracing such initiatives as Mercy Clinics, 16 managed rural hospitals, Mercy College, Mercy Hospice, House of Mercy, etc. The Mercy Medical Center staff provided the Archbishop and other guests at a luncheon with an update on the current status of healthcare reform in the United States. In the evening four staff doctors made presentations on the present and future developments in their respective specializations as they are situated within the Catholic tradition. Highlighted in these presentations was the fact that Iowa is ranked at the top in terms of quality of healthcare which is delivered among those states where the cost is least. Exemplifying continued commitment to charity and generous service to all, especially the poor, the Mercy network provided charity services in amounts totaling $55.59 million dollars in fiscal year Archbishop Zimowski and Msgr. Namugera spent their second day in Des Moines at Mercy College of Health Sciences. They were immediately introduced to the fine values that constitute the student experience at Mercy College: knowledge, excellence, compassion, reverence and integrity, which continually point students to the Catholic mission of the college. The Archbishop had the opportunity to meet with the 137 new nursing students who were just beginning orientation in preparation for their anticipated years at the college. The Archbishop pointed out how the Bishop s Schedule Mone Mone Aye shared her experience as refugee with Archbishop Zygmunt Zimowski. She also talked about her education plans at Mercy College of Health Sciences during the archbishop s visit to Des Moines recently. college s five values when integrated into their studies and eventually into their nursing practice provide a solid basis for continuing the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy and being of authentic service to the patients they will serve. Mercy College is thriving with a capacity student enrollment of 840 preparing in allied medical health fields to serve the medical enterprise. On the basis of a federal grant of $3.4 million, Mercy College is introducing an innovative program entitled Pathways to Healthcare Careers Iowa. This project will recruit, screen and provide training and support services to limited English proficient refugees and immigrants in Iowa to help them pursue careers in the healthcare industry. This initiative furthers the precedent setting leadership of Governor Bob Ray who led Iowa in establishing the first of such programs in the United States decades ago. As you might well expect the visitors from the Vatican were highly impressed by the Mercy Medical outreach and all of its components which bless our community with consistent outstanding service in central Iowa every day. The community was also blessed and inspired by the Archbishop s visit. The Bulletin of Mercy Medical Center of September 3, 2010 noted: Throughout his visit, Archbishop Zimowski visibly demonstrated the connection of healthcare and faith. At the special Mass, the Archbishop s homily noted the Sisters of Mercy started great work that now must be carried on by others, reminding us, We are Jesus Christ s hands on earth. We must also be his heart. 3 Diocesan News The Catholic Mirror, September 17, Investigation of theft underway The Diocese of Des Moines was victimized by criminals who illegally obtained its banking information in order to transfer more than $600,000 to numerous recipients across the United States on Aug. 13 and 16. The diocese is taking steps to prevent such a theft from occurring again and is processing a claim with its insurance provider with the expectation that the funds will be restored. In the Heartland With Bishop Pates The diocese was advised of the theft by Bankers Trust of Des Moines the morning of Aug. 17, at which time all relevant bank accounts were shut down. At the instruction of the diocese, the bank immediately initiated the process of recovering funds where possible. To date, approximately $202,000 have been recovered. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and U.S. Treasury Department were notified and an investigation is underway. In the Heartland With Bishop Pates is a weekly, hour-long radio show broadcast live on Fridays at 10 a.m. on KWKY 1150 AM, Des Moines, and Spirit Catholic Radio FM, Omaha. Upcoming show topics are: Sept Live from St. Anthony School Sept Sandy Hatfield Clubb - RCIA, Haiti meals Oct Deacon Thomas Willinger on his new book on spiritual exercises Oct Dr. Aaron Urbanszk - Cardinal Newman - The Idea of a University Oct Christ Our Life Conference Call in with questions at 10:45 a.m. Fridays at or communications@dmdiocese.org Law enforcement has advised the Diocese of Des Moines that it seems to have been the victim of a highly sophisticated operation most likely based overseas. Every indication points to proper procedures being followed both before and after the thefts, and no diocesan or bank staff is suspected. The Diocese of Des Moines is not the first to be victimized by online theft. Last year alone, there were more than 330,000 complaints of internet theft more than 28,000 per month on average made to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (a partnership between the National White Collar Crime Center and the FBI). A 2009 annual report says this was a 22.3 percent increase compared to the number of complaints made in Computer experts cited in a Sept. 5 Des Moines Register story on cybercrime said online theft is a phenomenon happening across the country, and often times, when businesses or institutions are victimized, it does not become public unless they have to offer public disclosure. The diocese is not the last to be victimized in this manner. Just days after the theft of diocesan funds, the University of Virginia was victimized, losing nearly $1 million, according to the news story. While the Diocese of Des Moines is protected by insurance and anticipates the restoration of the funds, we have been advised that such criminal activity is rampant. Continued from page 2 Obviously, any entity that experiences such a crime should be significantly concerned. We trust, however, that legal authorities are doing all they can to investigate this matter, said Bishop Richard Pates. 4 The Catholic Mirror, September 17, I hope you had a good Labor Day weekend with friends or family. Unfortunately, for the many millions of people who are unemployed, Labor Day was another reminder of their need for a job. In this year s annual Labor Day statement, the U.S. bishops called for a new social contract to help workers in today s economy. Bishop William Murphy of Rockville Centre, New York, Chairman of the USCCB Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, compared the challenges faced by today s workers to the changing society of the Industrial Revolution addressed by Pope Leo XIII in the 1891 encyclical, Rerum Novarum (Of New Things). Bishop Murphy also drew on the teachings of Pope Benedict XVI, which call for placing the human person at the center of economic life and emphasize the role of civil society and mediating institutions such as unions in pursing the common good. The entire statement can be found at Let s keep those who are unemployed or under-employed in our prayers and give thanks for the work we have. Faithful Citizenship and early voting Early voting begins in Iowa on Opinion Legislative update Capital Comments By Tom Chapman Sept. 23. I ve never been a big fan of organized early voting efforts because I think we miss something when we don t participate together in the act of going to our polling place with fellow citizens. But in any case, early voting is here and it s still our responsibility as citizens to be informed. We are in the final stages of producing our election-season Faithful Citizenship for Iowa Catholics flier which the bishops will ask parishes to include with the bulletin about a month from now. The Catholic Church does not endorse or oppose candidates or political parties. However, it contributes to the political process by encouraging Catholics to learn about the church s teachings on protecting the vulnerable and the poor. The flier will also include a list of questions for candidates in Iowa. We ll send you the official Guest Column By Deacon Mike Manno Letters to the Editor announcement of the Faithful Citizenship project later this month. Iowa Institute for Social Action Registration is now available at for the 17th annual Iowa Institute for Social Action. It will be held Saturday, Oct. 9 at St. Mary-Holy Cross Parish in Elkhart (halfway between Ames and Des Moines). The Iowa Institute for Social Action will help you become a better advocate on social justice and peace issues in your local community as well as throughout the world. The event is sponsored by the Catholic dioceses and Catholic Charities agencies in Iowa as well as the Iowa Catholic Conference. Our keynote speaker will be Tina Rodousakis, Grassroots Advocacy Manager for Catholic Relief Services since Telemed abortions A group of pro-life organizations in Iowa led by Iowans for Life have encouraged the state Board of Medicine to look into Planned Parenthood s abortion program which provides an abortion pill by remote control following a consultation by webcam (a telemed abortion). The Board of Medicine announced that it has formed an ad hoc committee to review its policy statement on a physician s practice of medicine over the Internet and by means other than a face-to-face visit with a patient. State s budget The State of Iowa has applied to receive about $226 million for Medicaid and K-12 education, thanks to a state aid bill passed by Congress last month. While the bill will help save teacher jobs and improve access to health services for low-income individuals, unfortunately it was paid for by reducing funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) popularly known as food stamps. Catholic Charities USA had urged members of the Senate and House not to fund other federal programs at the expense of hungry families. And finally, The National Catholic Rural Life Conference has a new website at Go take a look. Tom Chapman is the executive director of the Iowa Catholic Conference, the public policy arm of the Catholic Church in Iowa. For the love of God: the women of Community XIII It caught me by surprise to be so profoundly moved when the 13 men prostrated themselves and joined the hundreds in the cathedral, praying for Christ s mercy, said Kathie Obradovich, reflecting on her husband Jim s ordination to the permanent diaconate. I could feel the Holy Spirit in that moment. For the 11 wives of the 13 men ordained last month, the formation experience made a profound change in their own lives, as well as their husbands. The four-year process requires candidate wives to travel the same path their husbands do; one week each summer and two weekends a month spent in formation activities. This provides wives with an honest assessment of what the Church will be asking of their husbands, said Tammy Myers, who with her husband, Deacon Ron Myers, directs the program. But for the wives, there was more to the process than simply learning what a deacon would be called upon to do. My understanding of and my love for the Catholic faith is so much stronger and deeper now, and I am able to share that in ways I never could before, said Peggy McClellan, wife of Deacon Bob To the Editor: We are all keenly aware of the economic challenges that confront us as we labor in our ministries. You, as the shepherd of your diocese, have a myriad of needs to balance, while often challenged by declining resources. We too at the national and international levels of the Pontifical Mission Societies have had similar experience as we seek support for the mission. And yet, despite the McClellan of Holy Family Parish in Council Bluffs. During the vesting ceremony each wife took to the altar her husband s vestments, then, after vesting, they returned to their seats in the congregation. It felt so right for me to leave Bob for service at the altar. It was where he belonged... and now it is time for me to share with others this special man that God has blessed me and our family with, Peggy added. People often tell me I must be an enormously dedicated wife to take on the demands of formation for my husband. Here s a secret: I love him a lot, but I wouldn t do all that just for him. The time spent working on my relationship with God has spilled over into every other relationship with family, co-workers, neighbors, friends and the community, Kathie, whose challenges, we remain as committed as ever to doing our best, with your most valued collaboration, to animate the faithful to be an active part of our one family in mission. During 2009, the Diocese of Des Moines contributed $27,415 to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, and $860 to the Society of St. Peter Apostle for seminarians and Religious novices in the Developing World. During a private audience with the world s national directors of the Pontifical Mission Societies, Pope husband is assigned to Holy Trinity Parish in Des Moines, said. From the formation process I am taking a clearer understanding of the Catholic faith, and a more spiritual relationship with my husband, said Myrna Udelhofen, wife of Deacon Steve Udelhofen of Our Lady s Immaculate Heart in Ankeny. Ordination was a very humbling experience for me. I know that neither of us can answer this call without God s help. We are both very humbled to be called. To Pat Wadle, wife of Deacon Dave Wadle of St. Anthony s in Des Moines, the process revolved around peace and sharing, I am at peace, resigned in knowing that God s will has been fulfilled. It has been quite a ride, filled with growth in faith, trust and also in recognizing God s generosity even in the midst of suffering and pain. I am grateful for the opportunity to share in Dave s journey and I hope to share with others the gifts I have received. Looking forward, Mary Houston, wife of Deacon Jim Houston of St. Pius X in Urbandale, said, I look forward to seeing how the Holy Spirit will work within all of us as our families mature into the life of a deacon. I sense the wonder we ll experience as Jim begins Benedict XVI asked us to share his personal gratitude with you and the faithful of your diocese for supporting the universal mission needs of the Church. May I humbly ask you, even in the most challenging times to continue to assist our Holy Father through the outreach of the Pontifical Mission Societies. Rev. Msgr. John E. Kozar National Director Pontifical Mission Societies his ministry, and how we will work together or separately, as servants of the Church. But Diana Schleisman may have quietly summed up the wives almost universal response: This process has strengthened my faith, helped me to have a more personal relationship with God, helped my prayer life to become more interactive, and increased my commitment to the marital sacrament entered into many years ago. Her husband, Terry, is at St. Mary of Nazareth in Des Moines. Of the 13 new deacons, eleven are married. But there was a 12th woman present at the ordination, if only in spirit. Deacon Bill Hare s wife, Betty, died in I know she was there for me, he said. I could feel it and so could the whole family. We all knew; we all felt her presence. One new deacon, Dan Gehler, is single and joins Deacon Hare at St. Joseph s in Des Moines. So, for the 12 who saw their men through to ordination, the community gives its thanks: to God for giving us such wives and to the ladies for answering their own call. Thank you Regina, Betty, Mary, Peggy, Kathie, Jan, Julie, Di, Judy, Myrna, Pat, and of course, thank you Luanne. Submissions Policy The Catholic Mirror welcomes letters to the editor. By Lisa Bourne Staff Writer After the birth of a child, parents can continue giving life in a number of ways through the use of umbilical cord blood collected after delivery. If they do nothing, the cord blood is disposed of as medical waste. One life-giving option involves donating the blood from their child s umbilical cord through a process that would benefit ethical, lifesaving research in accord with Catholic Church teaching. Cord blood donation is not new, but is not widely known or practiced, according to Kim Lehman, former president of Iowa Right to Life. She s currently with the Iowa City-based John Paul II Stem Cell Research Institute, which encourages cord blood donations for research. The institute is a non-profit research organization focused on stem cell research that is in line with pro-life bioethics. To make a donation, the institute can provide a free collection kit to parents prior to the time of birth, and with advance arrangement with their physician and hospital, collection is made and delivered to the institute within 48 hours of the birth. Mercy will process it for research at the request of the patient. As the Diocese of Des Moines celebrates its upcoming Cord blood donation life giving Deacon shares spiritual exercises Thomas Winninger was a successful Minneapolis-based motivational speaker and marketing strategist when, one day, he found himself in a hotel room on a business trip wondering: Is this all there is to life? He was recognized nationally for his successful speaking and business skills, yet he felt empty. A product of Jesuit schools, Winninger was familiar with St. Ignagius of Loyola s spiritual exercises, but with a busy workload he didn t have time for a full 30-day retreat. In an effort to answer his own question, he took St. Ignatius s spiritual exercises and put them in a simple format for himself. And then he thought, why keep it to himself? The result is Get Out of the Boat, Discover the Meaning of Your Life, a book I came across during a weekend away at Conception Abbey, in Missouri. Each exercise builds on the previous one. Through this experience, you examine what you do well, what activities energize you, what you like to do and what you might dream of doing. By the time I finished my seventh encounter, I felt renewed in my desire to make each day count. My prayer life included more thoughts about what I could do using my talents and skills to impact the lives of those around me rather than a wish list. The institute currently has all the donated cord blood it can handle and then some, from Mercy Hospital in Iowa City and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, she said. Bishop Richard Pates also offered endorsement of the efforts at JP2RI for stem cell research from cord blood in a letter earlier this year. 10 10 The Catholic Mirror, September 17, 2010 Diocesan News Christ our Life Spanish immersion program begins Conference coming By Marilyn Lane Contributing Writer Picking a few of the most worthy speakers -- the most precious jewels -- to highlight for the upcoming Christ Our LIfe Conference is tough, for each bring a unique gift and story. At right is a list of the speakers. Hear from some of those who have already bought tickets for the conference. I think we should come see how Jesus is working in other peoples lives. Jesus, who is invisible, will become visible if we just open our hearts and listen, said Paul Chicoine, of St. Theresa Church in Des Moines. I believe the conference is for all people, no matter where they are in their faith journey...we can ALL grow and develop stronger roots with our great God, said Amy Christiansen, of St. John Parish in Onawa. How can I look at my children, see how they re celebrating their faith, and then see myself just sitting on the sidelines? aid Cory Gabel, of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Indianola. Diocese emphasis on marriage-building the Office of Marriage Ministry to their respective parish when it comes to promote the intitiative. A basic tenent of the plan is to raise awareness that everyone lives a vocation, whether it is to be married with a family, single or consecrated life, Deacon Luft said. We re trying to get the parishes talking more about marriage as a vocation, he said. We re trying to get them to talk about marriage as a sacrament. The groundwork The Lufts currently perform assessments for the diocesan Tribunal and for second marriages for those with children, those who are under 21 or those who are referred for pastoral concern. They also set up premarriage programs for parishes in the diocese as well as marriage validation workshops, sacramental workshops and life-skills seminars. They began a bi-annual diocesan marriage celebration a few years ago and they conduct marriage retreats. Students enrolled at San Antonio de Padua Spanish immersion program are taught by Marisol Guerra, who relocated from Honduras to teach the children. Continued from page 1 three or four of her students have had some exposure to Spanish prior to coming to the class, and the rest have had none. Located at St. Anthony School in Des Moines, the program is the second of its kind in the state and a first for the Diocese of Des Moines. This first year, the program is for kindergarteners. Sections will be added each year as the first class progresses through subsequent grades. Students will be immersed in the Spanish language for 90 percent of the school day in kindergarten and first grade. Then a shift takes place. Instruction in English is slowly increased beginning in second grade and by fifth grade instruction is 50 percent in English and 50 percent in Spanish. At that point, the children will be fluent in both languages. Students in the San Antonio program follow the same curriculum as all other Des Moines diocesan schools. St. Anthony parent Sara Eide enrolled her twin daughters, in the program. Eide, who studied Spanish herself for a number of years, said a Spanish immersion program is much more effective than simply studying the language. 11 Local man s mission: to provide water to the needy By Patti Brown Contributing Writer Mike DeVolder has turned a passion for travel into a mission to improve the lives of people who need one of life s most basic elements: water. And not just water, but clean, safe water. More than 1.2 billion people live without safe drinking water and every day 25,000 people die from preventable, water-related illnesses. DeVolder, a parishioner at St. Francis of Assisi in West Des Moines, just returned in July from a trip to Moshi, Tanzania where he brought 1,300 mosquito nets and funds to help drill a well at a boarding school being constructed by the Diocese of Moshi. There DeVolder worked with a local priest, Fr. Daniel Amad, who opened doors with leaders in 21 rural villages that desperately need access to potable water. I have seen young women and young children walk seven to 10 miles a day, each way, with 5-gallon buckets to bring back water to their homes, said DeVolder. The daily water journeys are often done in the dark as Tanzania sits on the Equator and night falls at 7 p.m., 365 days a year. According to DeVolder, the treks can be dangerous, It is not uncommon for people to be bitten by a snake or attacked by wild dogs on the rural roads. The cost of drilling a well is between $10,000 and $15,000 dollars. DeVolder began Break the Cycle of Hunger, a 501 C 3 tax-exempt non-profit charitable organization, two years ago to raise both funds and awareness of the problems many people in the world face in accessing clean water. Former diocesan newspaper editor dies Jesuit rebuts physicist s claim about the universe WASHINGTON (CNS) A Jesuit priest who is former president of Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., has taken to YouTube and his blog to rebut arguments raised by British physicist Stephen Hawking, who says in a new book that God had no role in creating the universe. Hawking, a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences since 1986, said in his new book, The Grand Design, that because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason why there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist, Hawking added. Father Robert J. Spitzer, president of the Magis Center of Reason and Faith in Irvine, Calif. and author of a new book on the existence of God, said in a YouTube video called The Curious Metaphysics of Dr. Stephen Hawking that Hawking s fundamental assumption about the universe is that it came from nothing. But the priest said what many term the first principle of metaphysics is From nothing only nothing comes. If the physical universe had a beginning (a point at which it came into existence) then prior to that point it was nothing, Father Spitzer said in his blog. And if it was nothing then it could not have created itself (because only nothing can come from nothing). So what does that imply? he asked. The very reality that Dr. Hawking wants to avoid, namely, a transcendent power which can cause the universe to come into existence. Father Spitzer s YouTube video, blog, his book and upcoming documentary are available at faith.org. DAVENPORT, Iowa (CNS) Boosting morale in a diocese deeply wounded because of the abuse of children by some clergy in past decades, Catholics in the Davenport Diocese pledged $22 million in a capital campaign that succeeded despite the worst economic conditions in decades. The campaign was the first in more than 20 years for the diocese and came at a time of rebuilding following bankruptcy. All 80 parishes and the Newman Catholic Student Center in Iowa City participated in the fundraising effort that will cover the purchase and renovation of diocesan headquarters in Davenport as well as support clergy, seminarians, schools, parishes and diocesan ministries. More than 9,700 donors contributed, with an average gift of $2,265. I am absolutely overwhelmed at the response of people for their church, Davenport Bishop Martin J. Amos said. The initial need was prompted by the bankruptcy, but the success of the campaign has truly moved us forward in faith and hope. Capital campaign chairman Mike Bauer was impressed by the generous response of people throughout the diocese in the midst of a difficult economy. He also said he was humbled by the response of the diocese s priests in making such a substantial commitment of both their personal financial contributions ($1 million in pledges) and their commitment of time and energy to make sure we were successful. The 20 percent rebate to parishes also proved to be an attractive incentive. We were particularly influenced by the rebate program because we have all kinds of needs here at St. Paul the Apostle, said Father Mike Spiekermeier, pastor of the Davenport parish. His was one of five parishes that piloted the campaign. The first rebate check, for $65,648.15, helped with payments toward purchase of property and construction of a parking lot for the growing parish. Future payments will go toward other improvement projects. 70 West 36th Street, 8th Floor, New York, NY After bankruptcy, Davenport diocese raises $22 million in capital campaign By Barb Arland-Fye Catholic News Service I am absolutely overwhelmed at the response of people for their church. -- Davenport Bishop Martin J. Amos St. Mary Parish in Grinnell, another pilot parish, received its first payment $23,877 and used it toward purchase of a new air conditioner in the church, said the pastor, Father Nick Adam. Future checks will go toward other physical needs at the church, such as repair of the front steps. Deacon Dennis and Sarah Luft Office of Marriage Ministry Always be open for the good of the spouse The apostle Paul writes to the Romans: "Bless your persecutors; never curse them, bless them.... Never pay back evil with evil.... Never try to get revenge.... If your enemy is hungry, give him something to eat; if thirsty, something to drink.... Do not be mastered by evil, but master evil with good" (Romans 12:14-21). These words cut to the heart of the relationship with your spouse and your spiritual life. They make it clear what it means to choose life, not death, to choose blessings not curses. But what is asked of us here goes against the grain of our human nature. We will only be able to act according to Paul's words by knowing with our whole beings that what we are asked to do for our marriage is what God has done for us.

13 International News The Catholic Mirror, September 17, USCCB leaders denounce intolerance against religion WASHINGTON (CNS) Shortly before the pastor of a small Florida Pentecostal church appeared to back down from plans to burn the Quran on Sept. 11, the chairmen of three committees of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops joined in condemnation of any acts of religious intolerance. All acts of intolerance aimed at a religious community should find no place in our world, let alone in our nation which is founded on the principle of religious freedom, said a statement issued Sept. 9 by Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory of Atlanta and Bishops William F. Murphy of Rockville Centre, N.Y., and Howard J. Hubbard of Albany, N.Y. The three chair the USCCB committees on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs; Domestic Justice and Human Development; and International Justice and Peace, respectively. The Rev. The book will also be available from online booksellers such as Amazon.com and directly from the USCCB Pope Benedict s first five years reveal a man who can walk calmly through troubled times as he seeks to heal wounds and bring people together, says the book s editor, Outreach Center in Gainesville, Fla., announced late Sept. 9 that he had called off plans for the Quran burning after he was promised that the proposed Islamic community center near ground zero in New York would be moved. Because Muslim leaders said no such promise was made, it was unclear Sept. 10 whether the Quran burning would take place the next day. The USCCB leaders also Sister Mary Ann Walsh. Holy Father goes to Scotland, England (CNS) -- Cardinal John Henry Newman s teaching and his personal life can be a source of inspiration for men and women today, Pope Benedict XVI said just one week before he was scheduled to beatify the 19thcentury English theologian. Speaking with pilgrims gathered in the courtyard of the papal summer villa at Castel Gandolfo Sept. 12, Pope Benedict asked for prayers for his trip Sept to Scotland and England. I ask everyone to accompany with their prayers during this apostolic visit, the pope said in Italian. He told French-speaking visitors that he was happy for the opportunity to visit Great endorsed a statement on the proposed Quran burning issued Sept. 8 by the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue at the Vatican and voiced solidarity with a group of interfaith leaders who met in Washington Sept. 7 to denounce categorically derision, misinformation and outright bigotry being directed against America s Muslim community. His personality and his teaching can be a source of inspiration for our age and for ecumenism, the pope said. Anglican and Vatican officials have said that Cardinal Newman, who already is commemorated on the Anglican calendar, is a model for both communities of a Christian committed to the search for truth and to the respect for the individual conscience.

Bradley Offutt, Chancellor, at or offutt@diocesekcsj.org Archbishop: New evangelization offers opportunity By Mark Zimmermann Catholic News Service WASHINGTON (CNS) Pope Benedict XVI s call for a new evangelization offers a special opportunity for all Catholics, Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl of Washington said in a new pastoral letter titled Disciples of the Lord: Sharing the Vision. The Second Vatican Council emphasized that every Catholic, as a disciple of Christ in today s world, is called to undertake the mission of evangelization. Strengthened by the summons of Jesus and by love of our neighbor, it is our call to reach out again, in charity and truth, to our brothers and sisters who have been away from the practice of their faith so that the church may bear abundant fruit for each person, each parish and for our society, Archbishop Wuerl wrote. In June, Pope Benedict announced he was establishing the Pontifical Council for Promoting New Evangelization to repropose the perennial truth of Christ s Gospel. Somehow in what we do and how we express our faith, we have to be able to repropose our belief in Christ and his Gospel for a hearing among those who are convinced that they already know the faith and it holds no interest for them, Archbishop Wuerl wrote. Today s evangelists, like the first disciples who burned with love for Christ, are called to help others get to know and love Jesus, he said. We are called not just to announce, but to adapt our approach so as to attract and to urge an entire generation to find again the uncomplicated, genuine and tangible treasure of friendship with Jesus, he said. To reach those who have drifted away from the faith or whose faith has grown cold, the pastoral proposed using new means of communication, including websites and .

16 16 The Catholic Mirror, September 17, 2010 The Question Corner Q. My wife and I have been married 66 years. She is Catholic, I am not, but I want to join the church if that s possible. We have gone to Mass together through all those years, except when I stayed home with our young children so she could go. She now has Alzheimer s disease, but I still take her every Sunday. She doesn t want to walk up to Communion anymore. I offered to go up with her, but she says no. She s never alone. Can you help me? What do I need to do to become Catholic? The Question Corner By Father John Dietzen How do I become Catholic? (Virginia) A. IT SOUNDS AS if you have had an unusually rich and blessed married life. In spite of the present suffering your wife s dementia is causing for both of you, I m happy for you. You have much to be proud of. Have you talked with the pastor of your church, or perhaps another priest with whom you may be acquainted, about your desire to convert to the Catholic faith? Considering your history of Catholic worship with your wife, the journey would be a very short one for you mainly perhaps just making a profession of faith and starting to receive the Eucharist and other sacraments. It s true that the usual path to membership in the Catholic faith is the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, a monthslong process of study and Catholic practice leading to reception into the church, usually at Easter time. For various reasons, however, that is often not possible or practical for people like yourself. A considerably briefer time can be arranged that is quite sufficient to fill in the details you might need to live a full Catholic life. Based on the information you give, something like this could readily be done in your case. Please talk to someone soon, and take advantage of the time God is still giving you. Business Directory
