2 Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) Department of library and information science University of Kota Kota (Rajasthan) Syllabus for Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) Main Objectives The main objectives of the MLIS course are: - To make the student proficient in library and information science subject. - To give the student advanced knowledge regarding selected areas in library and information science. and - To prepare the student for further research leading to M.Phil or other research degree. Course Duration: One year/two semesters (each semester has duration of 6 months) Number of Seats: 15 Eligibility Criteria: Bachelor of Lib. & information science with minimum 48% for general candidates and pass marks for SC/ST/OBC/SOBC candidate through merit basis Medium of Instruction and Examination: English / Hindi Exam scheme for MLIS in library and information Science The scheme of the course for the degree of master of library and information science as under: Each Theory Paper 3 hrs. Duration 80 Marks Dissertation Internal assessment for each Paper 80 Marks 20 Marks 1. The number of paper and the maximum marks for each paper/practical shall be shown in the index of syllabus for the subject concerned. It will be necessary for a candidate to pass in the theory part as well as in practical part (wherever prescribed) of a subject/paper separately. 2. The Dissertation shall be typed and written and be submitted in four copies so as to reach the office of the registrar atleast 3 weeks before the commencement of the theory examinations. Only such candidates shall be permitted to offer Dissertation who secured atleast 60% marks in the aggregate of all the papers prescribed for the Bachelor of Library and Information Science examination. 3. A candidate failing in first semester examination may be provisionally admitted to the Second semester, even though he/she fail in all papers of first semester. 4. As regard the ex-student, they will be allowed to re- appear in paper in the respective semester examination subject to total number of attempt for a paper not exceeding two times in addition to his/her main/first chance during the span period of the program. 5. A Candidate may be allowed grace marks in only one theory paper and in only one internal assessment upto the extent of 1% of the total marks prescribed for respective semesters examination. 2

3 6. The institute shall keep in custody all the records on the basis of which internal assessment marks are give. i. Awards at least for one year and these records shall be made available to any inspection team constituted by the University for the purpose. ii. The span period of the program shall be three years from the date of registration in the program. Student will be allowed to undertake a maximum of two attempts in addition to his/her main/first attempt in respective semester examination to pass any any number of papers. iii. A student will be declared pass in any individual paper he/she secures 40% or more marks in internal assessment and external examination separately, otherwise, he/she will be declared fail in the subject. But to pass any particular year, the student will be required to get a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate of all the papers of each semester. iv. Any time a student appears in the University examination of any paper, his/her internal assessment marks secured by the candidate first time may should be considered in case of reappearance. He/she should not be required to appear in internal assessment again. The students who fail in theory papers only intend to improve his interested assessment he will be allowed after depositing examination fee for respective papers only two chance after main semester. v. The degree shall be awarded to successful students on the basis of the combined results of first, second semester examinations, provided he/she has cleared all the papers with the required aggregate marks of 50% or more in each of the semester separately. The division will be awarded on the basis of the percentage of marks obtained in all the two semester taken together as follows: -Securing 60% and above : First Division. -From 50% but less than 60% : Second Division viii. ix. A student to be eligible for award of degree has to pass all the papers offered during two semester program within the span period of three year in respective semesters. No candidate shall be considered to have pursued a regular course of study unless he/she is certified by the head of the institution to have attended the 75% of the total number of classes conducted for each papers during his/her course of study. Any student not complying with this requirement will not be allowed to appear in the ensuing university examination. Shortage of attendance may however be condoned by the competent authority as provided in the university rules to the extent as provided in these rules. x. There shall be four papers in each semester. Each theory paper will be of three hours duration and carry 80 marks. Out of eight papers, there shall be seven compulsory and eight is optional paper there are four options in eight paper. The candidates may select only one paper from any one option in the eight paper in the second semester only. Subject to minimum strength of five students will be for particular optional paper. Otherwise students have to adopt only one paper which meets above said minimum strength of students for optional paper. It is must be noted that dissertation as a optional paper will be provided only for those student who got first division in bachelor of library and information science course. 3

4 Internal Assessment The internal assessment pattern is also decided covering 20% component of the total marks, which will include a written examination/viva/ internship of 10 marks and a seminar, activity and attendance component of 10 marks. However, internship provision is given in only MLIS05(Application of Information Communication and Technology (ICT)), MLIS06(Information Sources, Systems and Programmes) and MLIS07(Information Institutions, Products and Services) papers of 10 marks as an optional in place of written examination/ viva.
