1 ( ) Features Faxback Doc. # Your Radio Shack Spanish/English Pocket Translator, based on Berlitz translations, is easy to use and is specially designed for the world traveler. You can use it to translate between English and Spanish, and the metric conversion function lets you quickly convert between English and metric measurements. The translator also has a currency converter that makes it easy to convert between U.S. Dollars and any of five other currencies. Other Features: World Time - shows the date and time in any of 128 cities in the world. 10-Digit Calculator - performs memory and percent calculations as well as standard arithmetic operations. Phrase Memory - shows the translation of 575 common phrases in 10 useful categories. Automatic Power Off - conserves battery power by turning off if you do not press a key for about 3 minutes. Display Contrast Adjustment - lets you adjust the display's contrast to a comfortable viewing level.

2 ( ) Preparation Faxback Doc. # Turning ON/OFF The Translator To turn on the translator, press ON. To conserve battery power, the translator automatically turns off if you do not press a button for about 3 minutes. To manually turn off the translator, press OFF. Adjusting the Display Contrast 1. Press MODE until **English** or **Espanol** appears on the display. 2. Repeatedly press /\ or \/ to adjust the display's contrast to one of 16 levels. Setting the Date and Time 1. Press MODE until the display shows the date and time (the seconds show on the right of the display). Apr 1 A 1: Press > to display the current home city. New York 3. Select your home city by repeatedly pressing /\ or \/. Or, enter the first letter of your home city, then repeatedly press /\ or \/ until the name of your home city appears. If the translator does not list your city, select a city that is in your time zone. 4. Press MODE to select the new home city and return to the date/time screen. 5. Press EDIT. An underline appears under the first digit of the year A 10:05 6. Enter the year, month, and day of the month. Then enter the time. Press AM or PM to set an AM or a PM hour. For example, for 10:30 AM on November 22, 1996, enter and press AM. 7. Press EDIT to store the date and time. NOTE: If the information you enter is invalid (for example, you enter 13 for the month), the display returns to the previous time and date setting. Repeat Steps Press SPACE, if necessary, for daylight savings time. + appears on the display and the hour advances by 1. Nov22 A+11:31 25 NOTE: Press SPACE again to turn off daylight savings time. The hour digit decreases by 1 and + disappears.

4 ( ) Operation Faxback Doc. # Viewing the World Time Follow these steps to view the time in 128 cities around the world. 1. Press MODE until the translator displays the date and time (with an arrow to the right of the display). This is the date and time in the last selected city. Nov22 P 2:47 > 2. Press > to display the previously selected city's name. If you want to view the date and time for another city, repeatedly press /\ or \/ to display the desired city name. Or enter the first letter of the desired city name, then repeatedly press /\ or \/ until the translator displays that city. Then press MODE. The date and time for the city appears. NOTE: Press SPACE if necessary, for daylight saving time. + appears on the display and the hour digit advances by 1. Translating a Word Follow these steps to translate a word between English and Spanish. 1. Press MODE until **English** or **Espanol** appears on the display. 2. Press ENG to translate from English to Spanish, or press SPA to translate from Spanish to English. ** English ** 3. Enter the word that you want to translate. For example, to translate the word "take" from English to Spanish, type TAKE. take NOTES: To delete incorrect letters, press <. The translator uses British spellings of some words. If you are unsure of a word's spelling, enter the first few letters in the word, then press ENG or SPA. The translator displays the first word in the word list that begins with those letters. For example, enter GARG, then press ENG. Gargle? Appears on the display. You can press /\ and \/ to scroll up or down through words in the wordlist until you find the word you want. 4. Press SPA to see the word in Spanish. In the example in Step 3, coger appears on the display. Coger NOTE: If the word has more than one possible translation, repeatedly press SPA to see the alternate words.

5 If you are translating from Spanish to English, press ENG to see the word in English. NOTE: Some Spanish words have additional or accented characters. When you translate from Spanish to English, enter the English letter that most closely matches the Spanish letter. When you press SPA, the word with its proper character or accent appears on the display. For example, to translate from Spanish, type NINO, then press SPA. The translator displays: nino? Then press ENG to see the translation. Repeat Steps 2-4 to translate other words. Translating a Phrase Your translator has built-in phrases in ten categories: BASICS, OPP (Opposites), TIME, TRAVL (Travel), ACCOM (Accommodations), RESTR (Restaurant), SHOP (Shopping), ENTRT (Entertainment), EMERG (Emergency), and BUSN (Business). 1. Press MODE until **English** or **Espanol** appears on the display. 2. Press ENG (to translate from English) or SPA (to translate from Spanish). 3. Press any one of the category keys (listed above the number keys) for the first built-in phrase. The first phrase in that category appears on the display. NOTES: If the display does not show the complete phrase, press > to view the rest of that phrase. To see other phrases, repeatedly press /\ or \/. 4. When the phrase you want to translate appears, press SPA for the Spanish translation or ENG for the English translation.

6 ( ) Calculator Operation Faxback Doc. # Using the Calculator You can use the translator to do standard arithmetic, memory and percent calculations. Press Mode until 0 appears on the display. The following keys function only in the calculator mode. Press AC to start a new calculation. Press CE to cancel the last entry. Press +/- to change the sign of the value on the display. NOTE: If the result of a calculation has more than 10 digits, or if you try to divide a number by 0, E (error) appears. If E appears, press AC to clear the display. Standard Calculations (+, -, x, /) For standard calculations, press the keys in the order they appear in the arithmetic operation. For example: You Press You See = 7. 8 x 3 = 24. Memory Calculations The memory calculation feature lets you easily do multi-step calculations. Press MC to clear the memory. Press M+ to total a calculation and add the total to memory. Press M- to total a calculation and subtract the total from memory. Press MR to recall (display) the value in memory. For example: You Press You See 4 x 5 M + M M + M M - M / 5 M + M15. MR M60.

7 NOTE: M appears at the left corner of the display when you store a value in memory. M disappears when you clear the memory. Percent Calculations The following examples show how to do percent calculations: To Calculate You Press You See What is 12% of 150? 150 x 12% 18. What percentage of 880 is 660? 660 / 880% 75. Converting Currency Your translator can convert among six currencies: U.S. Dollars, English Pounds, German Marks, Japanese Yen, Mexican Pesetas, and another currency you choose. You must set the exchange rate of each currency before you can convert it. Setting the Exchange Rate 1. Press MODE until **Currency** appears on the display. 2. Press the key (A, S, D, F or G) below the currency symbol that you want to set the exchange rate for, or press H to set the rate for another currency. 0. appears on the display. 3. Press EDIT and enter the exchange rate. 4. Press EDIT to store the exchange rate. 5. Repeat Steps 2-4 to enter exchange rates for other currencies. Converting Currencies 1. Press Mode until **Currency** appears on the display. 2. Enter the amount of currency you want to convert. 3. Press the currency key for the currency you want to convert to. 4. Press CLS, then repeat Steps 2 and 3 to convert another currency. For example, to convert 50 U.S. dollars to German Marks with an exchange rate of 1 dollar = 1.52 marks, press Dm, then EDIT. Enter 1.52 as the exchange rate and press EDIT again. Then enter 50 and press Dm to convert to Marks. The translator displays 76 (German Marks). NOTES: To reverse the exchange, press INV before you press the currency key. For example, to convert 50 German Marks to U.S. dollars, enter 50, press INV, then press Dm. The translator displays (dollars). To convert between two currencies, neither of which is U.S. dollars, convert the first currency into dollars. Then press CLS and enter the result of the first conversion. Then convert from dollars to

8 the desired currency. Metric Conversions Follow these steps to convert between English and metric measurements. 1. Press MODE until **Metric** appears on the display. 2. Enter the amount you want to convert. Then press the conversion key you want. NOTE: To reverse the conversion, press INV before you press the conversion key. For example, to convert 20 cm to inches, enter 20, press INV, then press Q (in-cm). The translator displays (inches).

9 ( ) Batteries Faxback Doc. # Installing Batteries The Translator comes with two CR2032, 3-volt lithium batteries (Radio Shack Cat. No ). Follow these steps to install them before you use your translator. 1. Slide the battery compartment cover in the direction of the arrow. 2. Install new batteries with their positive (+) sides up. 3. Replace the cover. Make sure that it is secure. WARNINGS: Never let children lay with the batteries. Swallowing a lithium battery could be fatal. To avoid risk of explosion, do not recharge, open, or heat a lithium battery or dispose of it in fire. If the translator functions erratically, press OFF to turn it off, then replace the batteries. IMPORTANT: Be sure to turn off the translator before you replace the batteries. Otherwise, you must reset the translator. See "Resetting" on Faxback Doc. #

10 ( ) Care and Maintenance Faxback Doc. # Resetting If the translator locks up or does not work properly, reset it by using a pointed object, such as a straight-ended paper clip, to press the RESET button at the back of the translator. NOTE: You must re-enter the date, time and currency exchange rates after you reset the translator. Maintenance Your Radio Shack Spanish/English Pocket Translator is an example of superior design and craftsmanship. The following suggestions will help you care for the translator so you can enjoy it for years. Keep the translator dry. If it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately. Some liquids contain minerals that can corrode the electronic circuits. Use and store the translator only in normal temperature environments. Temperature extremes can shorten the life of electronic devices, damage the batteries, and distort or melt plastic parts. Handle the translator gently and carefully. Dropping it can damage the circuit boards and can cause it to work improperly. Keep the translator away from dust and dirt, which can cause premature wear of parts. Wipe the translator with a damp cloth occasionally to keep it looking new. Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, or strong detergents to clean it. Use only fresh batteries of the recommended size and type. Always remove old or weak batteries. They can leak chemicals that can destroy electronic circuits. Modifying or tampering with the translator's internal components can cause a malfunction and might invalidate its warranty. If your translator is not performing as it should, take it to you local Radio Shack store for assistance.
