Call 3M Technical Service at if you have any questions about the information in this Bulletin. Product Information Product Description Light Pipe Series LPS100 and Series LPS150 are series of interconnected transparent pipes that distribute light over large areas when attached to a light source. These light pipes are ideal for decorative and functional lighting applications that demand high-quality lighting and low maintenance. The light emitted from the pipes is well suited for functional lighting since the pipes produce minimal glare, allowing fine details to be viewed with clarity and comfort. As decorative lighting, the light pipes can be used to create many unique highlighting or backlighting effects. Because the light pipes work with a centralized light source, lamp replacement is very convenient. The light pipes, also known as light pipe modules, are transparent cylindrical housings lined with an innovative 3M optical lighting film, which can simultaneously reflect or transmit light. Transparent couplings are used to interconnect the modules together to distribute light continuously for the length of the system selected. The light pipes for series LPS100 are 4 inches (102 mm) in diameter and 6 inches (152 mm) for series LPS150. Depending upon the aperture selected, both light pipe series are available in 8-foot (2.4-m) lengths up to 40 feet (12.2 m) for series LPS100 and up to 64 feet (19.5 m) for series LPS150. Please refer to Product Bulletin LPS for a complete listing of the available configurations. Each light pipe product comes with one or more light pipe modules and couplings. All other components for the light pipe installation, including mounting hardware, end caps and light sources, must be purchased separately. See Additional Materials Required. Applications When installed and used as described in this Bulletin, series LPS100 and LPS150 may be used for a variety of architectural, entertainment, industrial and general lighting applications for both indoor and outdoor environments. Depending upon the light source used, possible applications include: Functional lighting Public area and store lighting Tunnel and underpass lighting Task lighting Decorative lighting Building outlining and highlighting Architectural accents Wall wash highlighting Note: Light sources are available for a variety of applications, including functional white lighting and static or dynamic colored lighting for decorative purposes. Consult with your light source manufacturer about availability. Instruction Bulletin 7.2-2

Pre-Installation Checklist Read all installation instructions and safety warnings before installing or using this product. Consult with your light source manufacturer to select a suitable light source for series LPS100 or LPS150 and its intended application, and install the light source in accordance with the manufacturer s instructions. See Safety Information. Use care when unpacking and handling of the light pipe modules. Never touch the interior of a light pipe module. See Handling. Light pipe modules must be aligned properly and installed in the correct orientation and order. See Installation (Steps 1, 7 and 9). Obtain the additional materials required for the selected light pipe series prior to installation. See Additional Materials Required. Do not clean the interior of the light pipes. See Maintenance. Supplied Components Note: The quantities supplied vary by the product ordered. Light Pipe Module The light pipe module is a transparent polycarbonate pipe that is lined with 3M optical lighting and light enhancing films. The film is designed to transport and distribute light evenly along the entire length of the product. Each module for a given length of series LPS100 or LPS150 is individually numbered and must be installed in the proper sequence. Series Module Diameter Module Length LPS inch (10 cm) 95.5 inch (2.4 m) LPS inch (15 cm) 95.5 inch (2.4 m) Coupling The translucent coupling aligns adacent light pipe modules and maintains the illuminance of the system, while absorbing any thermal expansion and contraction from the modules. Its gasket creates a weather-tight seal between the modules, light source and end cap to seal out dust, dirt and moisture. Figure 2. Coupling Additional Materials Required! Warning Improper Installation Risk To reduce the risk of serious inury or property damage due to the lighting system dislodging from its mounting structure and striking a person or property: Select suitable anchoring hardware and fastening techniques for the mounting structure. End Cap (available from 3M) One end cap is required for each installation. The cap is connected to the inside of a coupling on the last light pipe. 3M s fabricated aluminum end cap uses a highly reflective 3M film on the inside surface to reflect light back into the pipes and maximize the efficiency of the light source. See the label for the module number Figure 1. Light Pipe Module Figure 3. 3M End Cap Instruction Bulletin 7.2-3

Mounting Clamp (available from 3M) One mounting clamp is required for each light pipe module supplied with the product. The mounting clamps attach the light pipe modules to the mounting structure. The 3M mounting clamp, as shown below, is supplied with a lower and upper clamp half, an O-ring to protect and grip the module and two 1/4-20 x 1.25-inch screws. Installation! Warning Improper Installation Risk To reduce the risk of serious inury or property damage due to the lighting system dislodging from its mounting structure and striking a person or property: Ensure the light pipes are installed with the proper gaps so the couplings can absorb any thermal expansion and contraction of the lighting system. See pages 4-8. Select suitable anchoring hardware and fastening techniques for the mounting structure. See Additional Materials Required on page 3.! Caution Figure 4. 3M Mounting Clamp Light Source Light source that is designed with a 6-inch (15-cm) outer diameter snout at least 2 inches (51 cm) long and has an ultraviolet (UV) filter that blocks all radiation below 340 nm is required. Anchoring Hardware Suitable anchoring hardware to attach the mounting clamps to the mounting structure (e.g., wall, ceiling, floor) is required. Be sure to select hardware that is appropriate for the type of structure (e.g., brick, metal, concrete). Consult with a structural engineer or building architect for recommendations. Note: Three anchors are required for the 3M mounting clamp. Silicone Lubricant Silicone lubricant to help slide the couplings over the light source and light pipe modules may be used. Use silicone lubricants only. Do not use oil, grease, soap or other types of lubricants; these may damage the plastic housing or the optical lighting film. Handling Important Note Do NOT touch the interior of the light pipe module. The film inside of the module can be damaged if it is touched or if dust or moisture enters the module. Handle the light pipe modules with care. Although the exterior housing of the light pipe module is rugged and capable of withstanding an impact, it is susceptible to scratching and should be handled accordingly. High Intensity Light Risk To reduce the risk of eye damage from high intensity light from the light source bulb or the highly reflective mirrored surface inside the end cap: Never look directly at the bulb or any reflected light from the end cap when the system is energized. Never look directly into the end cap in sunlight or allow any reflected sunlight from the end cap to be directed towards a person s eyes.! Caution Hot Surface Temperature Risk To reduce the risk of burns from hot surfaces: Never touch the surface of the light source when energized or until cool. Step 1: Establish the Orientation The light pipe modules may be installed indoors or outdoors in either a vertical or horizontal orientation. The 8-foot (2.4 m) long modules must be installed in a straight line and be securely attached to the structure using the mounting clamps at the recommended spacing. Note: Some light sources cannot be installed in certain orientations. Consult with your light source manufacturer to select a source appropriate for the intended orientation. Use a laser, string or chalk line to mark the axis line of the light pipe modules on the mounting structure as shown in Figure 5. Instruction Bulletin 7.2-4

Step 2: Install the Light Source Install the light source per the manufacturer s instructions. Be sure to leave adequate space around the light source for cooling and servicing the unit. Note: The light source must be attached directly to the mounting structure using suitable mounting brackets and hardware. The coupling and light pipe modules are not designed to hold the light source in place. Step 3: Mark the Clamp Locations The mounting clamps must be installed at the spacing shown in Figure 5.0 to properly secure the light pipe modules. 1. From the end of the light source snout, measure 90.5 inches (2.3 m) and make a reference mark for the location of the first mounting clamp. 2. Add reference marks at every 96 inches (2.44 m) for the remaining light pipe modules, except for the last module. 3. For the last module, make the reference mark at 105 inches (2.6 m) from the adacent module. Step 4: Mark the Anchor Locations After all the mounting clamp locations are marked, use the template in Figure 10 on page 8 to mark the anchor locations for the 3M mounting clamp. To accommodate surface irregularities, each mounting clamp may be moved 2 inches (50 mm) along the axis line and/or rotated 7 degrees off the axis line. Step 5: Attach the Mounting Clamps 105 in. (2.6 m) 96 in. (2.44 m) 96 in. (2.44 m) 90.5 in. (2.3 m) Last Mounting Clamp Last Light Pipe Module N th Mounting Clamp 3 rd Mounting Clamp 2 nd Mounting Clamp 1 st Mounting Clamp 1 st Light Pipe Module Important Notes Do NOT install more than one mounting clamp on a light pipe module. Use of more than one clamp may cause the light pipe to fracture or detach from the mounting structure. Never attach a mounting clamp directly to a coupling. This may cause the clamp to detach from the mounting structure. Attach the 3M mounting clamps using anchoring hardware that is suitable for the mounting structure. (Anchoring hardware is not included with the light pipes.) Axis Line Light Source (Lamp) Figure 5. Mounting Clamp Locations Instruction Bulletin 7.2-5

Step 6: Attach Coupling to Light Source Slide the coupling onto the light source snout with the short end toward the light source until seated against the pipe stop. If necessary, a silicone lubricant may be used on the coupling to help slide it over the light source. Sparingly apply silicone to the un-installed coupling and wipe dry before assembling. Important Notes Use silicone lubricants only. Do NOT use oil, grease, soap or other types of lubricants; these may damage the plastic or the lining.. Do NOT spray silicone on a coupling once it has been installed on the light pipe module. Silicone that enters the assembly may cause bright spots. Pipe Stop Short End Step 7: Install the First Module Important Notes The light pipe modules must be installed sequentially with the lowest number adacent to the light source (lamp). Do NOT fully seat the labeled end of light pipe module into the coupling. A gap is required to absorb any thermal expansion and contraction of the lighting system; a typical system may experience from 0.25 to 0.50 inches (6 to 13 mm) of movement. Failure to keep this gap may cause the mounting clamps to separate from the mounting structure. 1. Position the labeled end of the lowest-numbered light pipe module facing toward the light source. Insert the module into the coupling to the line shown on the label (Stop At This Line) in Figure 7. Note: The 360 degree emitting light pipes use module number 1 in all locations. 2. Orient the light pipe module so its aperture points in the direction you want to light. Make sure to face the label and seam toward the mounting structure. Long End Do NOT Insert Completely. Stop At This Line. Figure 6. Coupling Design Long End of Coupling Gap Short End of Coupling Light Source Figure 7. First Light Pipe Module Instruction Bulletin 7.2-6

Step 8: Secure and Fasten the Module Important Note Never attach a mounting clamp directly to a coupling. This may cause the clamp to detach from the mounting structure. For 8-foot long light pipe installations, proceed to Step 10 (Install the Last Module); otherwise, follow the instructions below. 1. Slide an O-ring onto light pipe module and align it with the groove in the 3M mounting clamp as shown in Figure Place the upper half of mounting clamp in place and secure it with the two 1/4-20 x 1.25-inch screws that are provided. Be sure to tighten the screws securely. Note: Except for the last mounting clamp (or a single pipe system), each clamp should be 5 ± 2 inches (13 ± 5 cm) from the end of the light pipe module. Step 9: Install an Adacent Module Important Note Do NOT fully seat the labeled end of the light pipe module into the coupling. A gap is required to absorb any thermal expansion and contraction of the lighting system; a typical system may experience from 0.25 to 0.50 inches (6 to 13 mm) of movement. Failure to keep this gap may cause the mounting clamps to separate from the mounting structure. For light pipe installations longer than 8 feet (2.4 m): 1. Slide another coupling onto the end of the previously installed light pipe module with the short end of the coupling facing toward the light source until it is seated against the pipe stop. 2. Insert the labeled end of the next lowest-numbered module into the coupling to the line shown on its label (Stop at This Line). Note: The 360 degree emitting light pipes use module number 1 in all locations. 3. Align the light pipe s aperture with previously installed module. 4. Repeat Steps 8 and 9 for all remaining light pipe modules, except for the last module (proceed to Step 10). O-ring Figure 8. O-ring Installation Instruction Bulletin 7.2-7

Step 10: Install the Last Module Prior to installing the last light pipe module, the end cap must be installed on the module as follows: 1. Slide a coupling onto the unlabeled end of the last module with the long end of the coupling facing towards the light source. Note: This coupling is installed in the opposite direction of the other couplings. 2. Insert the end cap into the coupling until fully seated. (There will not be a gap between the end cap and the last module.) 3. Follow Step 7 to install the last module (the highest number module). 4. Repeat Step 8 to secure the module with the following changes (see Figure 9): Place the O-ring on the end cap. Clamp the end cap in place. Mounting Clamp on End Cap Short End of Coupling Long End of Coupling Light Pipe Module (unlabeled end) Important Note Never attach a mounting clamp directly to a coupling. This may cause the clamp to detach from the mounting structure. Figure 9. Last Light Pipe Module Instruction Bulletin 7.2-8
