3 Level 1 - Non-confident beginner Water confidence Moving though water walking, hopping, jumping etc play games that encourage these until moving becomes natural. Floating with floatation aids Floating in a variety of positions (side, back, front, like and egg) using boards, noodles, milk bottles to support the swimmer Propulsion with floatation aids Move through the water front and back kicking and doggy paddle/sculling arms using noodles, milk bottles and other flotation aids Climb out of pool unassisted Using ladders/steps, hauling themselves over the side or if not possible monkey walking to safe exit point. Submerging Hair wet, mouth under, face under, head under leading to complete submerging play games which encourage this Breathe control Exhale into the water with mouth and nose (hum) Signal for help Do not wave, hold arm up straight - try on back floating use other hand to scull.

4 Level 2 Confident Beginner 1. Move freely and confidently around the pool 2. Float in a variety of positions holding a flotation aid 3. Submerge Floating front, side, mushroom, back Start of with floatation aids and then move towards independent floating. Change from one position to another without standing up e.g. starfish to egg then back to starfish. Under water skills opening eyes, sitting on bottom, swimming under water No goggles, play games pick up objects, how many fingers am I holding up etc Sculling skills basic Build a sand castle and break it down etc Get kids to experiment with using their hands to propel them in different directions can use floatation aids initially. Kicking free, back, breast Work on all 3 kicking styles, on front and back with and without boards. Encourage good technique, toes tapping (free and back), whale tail and glide -breaststroke Horizontal rotations (turning from front to back) Log rolls, crocodile death rolls, remember to hum Streamline glides Front and back tight streamlines Reach rescue practice using voice and keeping yourself safe. Swim 5m unassisted Any style as long as legs do not touch ground and they are independant

5 Level 3 Stroking 1. Swim 5 m unassisted 2. Float in a variety of positions independantly 3. Kick well in at least 2 strokes Sculling skills advanced Independantly moving in circles, feet first, head first etc Develop stronger kicking free, back, breast, side-fish Work on all of the kicks above emphasizing good technique Stroking, free, back, survival back, breast Introduce 4 styles of arms strokes, on poolside, with and without board/flotation aid. Whole stroke survival back Put arms and kick together and work on emphaising the glide phase of the stroke for maximum efficiency Streamlines underwater Back and front. Duck under water, get feet and arms ready, push off, kick and steer to surface. Work on tight streamlines. Vertical rotation Forward rolls in water, extension of egg floats. Throw rescue Using ropes or flotation aids rescue other while maintaining self preservation techniques Swim 15m 50m unassisted any style would recommend survival back

6 Level 4 Skills 1. Swim 15-50m unassisted 2. Kick well in at least 3 strokes 3. Stroke well in 2 strokes Freestyle breathing drills Extension of side-floats, and side-fish kicking. With and without floatation aids, 1 arms drills. Slow breath under water, quick breathe above water. Body rotation drills Kicking on front and back rotating body no boards With and without arms strokes Advanced stroking bent arm propulsive phase free and back Pull, push (free), Scull and bend elbow to side then flick to heel (back) Breaststroke arms and kicks separate emphasise the glide Survival back - fine tune timing Streamline back Kicking in tight streamline on back on surface of water. Distance per stroke drills Free, back, breast Long slow strokes aiming to reduce number per length Swim 25m-100m unassisted Any style independent

7 Level 5 timing and technique 1. Swim m unassisted 2. Kick well in at least 3 strokes 3. Attempt basic freestyle breathing Whole strokes Breaststroke, Freestyle, Backstroke Working on timing and technique bilateral breathing, correct breaststroke timing. DPS, body rotation, strong kicking, effective strokes. Use of swimming drills where appropriate. Introduce Side-stroke Introduce legs and arms separately on poolside first Then put them together. Butterfly basic Kick, Arms walking then together Treading water Eggbeater out of pool, using floatation aids Swim m unassisted
