1 Twin Mountain Model Works 7/8n2 Scale Estate Coach Introduction This tiny coach modeled in 7/8 n2 or 7/8 n18 is freelance in design and intended to capture the feel of a small Estate Railway. The instructions refer to several photographs to aid in placement and alignment of parts. The parts are numbered in the instructions and are referenced to the Parts List by material and thickness. Please take time to read through the manual before construction begins to become familiar with the construction process. It is generally easier to stain or paint each part before assembly so a few moments spent visualizing the final paint scheme is worthwhile. Advice on finishing techniques will be offered along the way. Safety You are responsible for the safe use of tools and materials used to build this model. Read and follow the manufacturer s warnings and wear eye protection. This kit contains small parts and is not intended for children.

Assembly Instructions 1.) Begin by locating the subfloor (part #1). Make a marking 0.75 in from the outside edge as these will be used to position the intermediate sills.

The 3/8 x 1/4 intermediate sills are glued in place by aligning the inside edge with the marking on the sub floor.

2 Assembly Instructions 1.) Begin by locating the subfloor (part #1). Make a marking 0.75 in from the outside edge as these will be used to position the intermediate sills. This should be done on the opposite side of the laser scribed alignment marks for the floor planking. Box in the frame as shown using 1/2 x ¼ outer frame sills and crossbeams. The 3/8 x 1/4 intermediate sills are glued in place by aligning the inside edge with the marking on the sub floor. Depending on journals and wheels used, adjust this spacing if necessary. Weight this on a flat surface to insure that there is no warping of the frame. 2.) Turn the frame over and add the planking as shown. Install planks (part #20a) working from each end. Next, install the 2 small spacers (part #20b ) followed with the end platform planks (part #20c). These will overhang the subdeck and should be centered. 3.) Locate and stain the end beams. Pre-drill these to accept the end rail castings but do not install the end railings at this time. Ozark Miniatures castings work well after cutting off the outer post. Glue the end beam onto the ends of the main frame making sure that they are centered. 4.) The windows and doors are assembled in 3 layers. The outer and inner window frames (part #12) are identical and can be stained. The middle frame is the window carrier (part #12a) and does not need to be stained. To assemble the windows, glue one outer frame (part #12) to the middle frame (part #12a) and insert the precut acrylic window glazing. Apply glue sparingly and avoid getting this on the glazing.

Carpenter s wood glue works well for this step and allows easy cleanup. Finish the window by gluing the inner frame (part #12) in place. All of this is accomplished in one step so the whole assembly can be weighted on a flat surface and allowed to dry. Repeat this for all 8 windows and feel fortunate that there are not 30 windows on this coach! The end doors are assembled in the same manner. 5.) Install the upper side fascia (part #23) by centering to allow equal overhang on each end. Laser marks are located near each end to help with alignment. Install these toward the centerline of the coach so that they are not visible. Glue the 3/16 sq. corner posts to the sides. Install the window sills, and side trim (#25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 35, and 36). Glue each completed window in place from the inside of the coach body. Neatness will pay off in the finished model here. USE GLUE SPARINGLY for the best results and avoid getting glue on the glazing! Finally add the lower side trim #23a)

4.) The coach end walls are laminated from four layers of 1/32 ply in this order 5a, 5b, 5c, 5b. The glazing is held in layer 5c. There is no glazing in the upper vents. 5a 5b 5c 5b 5a 5b 5c 5b 5.

The interior trim is completed next. Start with part #30a by aligning it under the windows and followed by part #30b and 30c. Next, install parts #13 between the windows and then part #16. Add the interior trim parts #16. The bench seat #31 is attached under #30c and held in place with the turned leg supports. 6.) Next, the side and end assemblies are assembled around the mainframe using the precut notches. These are held in place using clamps. Spend some time insuring that everything is square adjusting the clamps as necessary. The notched roof plank (part #34) can help with alignment.

5 Once satisfied that everything is in good alignment, glue the side assembly to the ends using carpenter's wood glue 7.) Install the door frames beginning with the arched upper frame (part #21) and lower threshold (part#22) followed by the vertical door framing (part #32). The upper arch is laminated together from 2 parts (#21). This is a good place to make a contrast in the color scheme to accent the door. Natural wood stains or paint can add visual interest here. 8.) The end doors are assembled and installed in the same manner as the windows (using parts #9 & #10). The doors can simply be glued in place or can be made to open using miniature hinges available from Doll s house suppliers. 9.) Install (3) 1/8 ply roof ribs (part #4) referencing photo. 10.) Install the roof planking starting with the notched center plank (part #34). Next, install the remaining roof planks (part # 33) keeping them in alignment with the center plank. Once installed, cover the planks with black sandpaper to simulate a tar paper roof. 2-3 coats of matte acrylic spray will reduce the abrasive qualities of the sandpaper. Follow this with a misting of flat black spray paint and flat white to build up a patina. 11.) Install the 1/8 basswood arced roof end fascia (part #24). 12.) Assemble the journals as per the manufacturer s instructions. The castings can be soaked in Blacken-It or painted to weather them before assembly.

It is recommended that the journals be installed with 5 minute epoxy for added strength and durability. Before gluing in place, test fit the wheels to see how everything goes into place.

Be sure that the axles are parallel to each other and parallel to the end of the frames. 13.) Install the end rails. The NBW castings are added to the end beams. Mount the brake wheel and pawl.

6 It is recommended that the journals be installed with 5 minute epoxy for added strength and durability. Before gluing in place, test fit the wheels to see how everything goes into place. It may be necessary to drill out the journals with a #30 drill bit to provide extra clearance for the axles. Glue the journals to the frame with the wheels in place between the journals. Be sure that the axles are parallel to each other and parallel to the end of the frames. 13.) Install the end rails. The NBW castings are added to the end beams. Mount the brake wheel and pawl. Assemble the brake gear if desired. The couplers are installed in the center of the end beam. 14.) Next, assemble the steps. They can be pre-stained before assembly or painted afterward. 4 pieces make each step. Part# 26 is horizontal and part #27 is vertical and they glue together by aligning the notches and tabs. Make sure they are 90 degrees to each other referring to the photos and drawings for proper orientation. Next, join the 2 subassemblies together. Gluing is best accomplished by turning them on end. Finally, glue the side plates (part #11) onto the steps. 15.) The completed stair assembly is installed by gluing to the end beams and to the mainframe.
