February is Black History Month in America. This month honors famous African-Americans. It honors how they have helped America. It honors important ideas in African-American history and culture. One important idea is fairness. America was not always fair to African-Americans. Long ago, most African-Americans came to America as slaves. They worked very hard for no pay. They were treated very badly. The Civil War helped end slavery. But African-Americans were still not treated well. African-Americans were not allowed to live in some places. They could not go to some schools. Sometimes African-Americans were not allowed to vote. February 4, n2y, Inc. page 1
2 news page Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. One speech helped make America a fairer nation. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave the speech 50 years ago. This year, Black History Month will honor this important speech. Dr. King was an African-American leader. He saw how some laws were not fair to African-Americans. Dr. King wanted to change the laws. He wanted Americans of every color to be treated fairly. He helped plan marches to tell everyone about the problem. The marches were big, outdoor meetings. Many thousands of Americans joined Dr. King. February 4, n2y, Inc. page 2
3 news page Dr. King s most famous march was in Washington, D.C. It was on August 28, Over 200,000 people came to this march. The march was on the city s National Mall. The Mall is a large park in the middle of the city. There Dr. King gave speeches and planned marches. were many speeches that day. The most important one was the speech by Dr. King. The speech was called, I Have a Dream. Dr. King said he dreamed of a better day in America. He Many African-Americans marched with Dr. King. dreamed of a day when all Americans were treated the same. 4 news page Dr. King watched as President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of The speech made the American people think and act. They told lawmakers that America needed better laws. Soon the lawmakers made new laws to help African-Americans. The new laws said African-Americans should be treated the same as everyone else. Lawmakers passed the Civil Rights Act of America is still not perfect. But Dr. King s speech made America a better place for everyone. America became a fairer country, and all Americans can be thankful for that. All Americans can celebrate Black History Month. Will your town celebrate this important month?
